But West Coast clawed their way back into the game during the second and third terms before and arm wrestle in the last saw scores level deep into time on. Enter James Hird, a controversial figure during the week for his criticism of the umpires, who, with his 15th disposal of the final quarter slotted a miracle goal with seconds to spare to clinch a famous Essendon victory. His hugging of the fan on the boundary has since become an iconic moment in AFL history.
