Burn My Dead Body, Don't Bury Me - Femi Kuti. And This is Why.

- After a brief performance in Fela shrine some weeks ago, Nigerian Music Lagend, Femi Kuti made a startling request about his burial. To the normal eyes it might seem like jsut a preference but for those of use who love morbid conversations, it seemed to us that Femi may be exposing a long diabolic practice carried out in African cemeteries. #graves #cemetery #documentary

My father was buried at matori cemetery, after some months later my siblings went there to lay flowers on the grave to their greatest suprise papa wasn’t there anymore his coffin has been dug, I was cold when I heard it this means when I return home I can’t even pay him a visit cos he his not there anymore.

That is why I love my Igbo culture, we take our beloved home in the village where you can always see them always
Exactly dear
Just like Luos in Kenya, we don't accept cremation either
But that also happens in most Kenyan communities especially those from the western part of the country. The public cemeteries within the cities are mainly used by the few who for some reason are unable to transport the bodies to their rural homes, the unclaimed bodies lying at the public morgues, or Muslims who are buried in Muslim cemeteries.
Exactly No matter the Distance
It’s the same way in Uganda in all cultures. It is only when the body of the deceased has not been identified or taken by the relative that they’re taken to a cemetery.
Hmmm Dan,your ideologies and wisdom are truly valuable..you really uplift Nigerians image..
Great job.
Femi Kuti is extremely intelligent,he’s very right in his thinking and doing.he’s a true son of his father.👍🏽🤛🏽✌️
We have very little respect for life, how much more for the dead. It's a very sad reality.
Am Cameroonian, in my tribe we hardly bury our loved ones in a public cemetery except in the case where there's a war or crisis goin on in the village, public cemetery are mostly for strangers ,we burry loved ones mostly in our family compound sometimes without grave stones...............great video ,this video is quite thought provoking ...well done
Same at We Kenyans...most people are buried in their land !!!

Thanks for doing this and highlighting this issue. We in Liberia have one holiday for grave cleaning but nothing for the rest of the year. My mother on the other hand used to keep our private family grave yard clean all year and she visited every evening to talk and sing to our deceased family members
That good
And the dead knows nothing as GOD teaches so they heard nothing. She singing in vain. But if its her level of coping oh well. But those family members if they died outside of Christ and the keeping his ten commandments they are with the rich man and his likes in hell waiting for their resurrection. All dead people goes to hell in their spirit form to wait for their renewed bodies which Christ will give them so they can come back to life to face him 🥺.......And it won't be well with most of us then.
@@saidesmithson a lot of you people on the internet are so discouraging. You all actually take precious time to bring others down. It's not for the dead that we do this, but it's for their memories and love. If you love something or someone you take care of it even in their absence. Christian or not, I believe that we should keep our dead ones graves clean. It's such a beautiful thing here in the US. But please, there are countless beliefs and practices of religion and celebration of death; stop discouraging others. Life is hard enough
Meaning, speaking with the dead? Hmmmm! Quite interesting 🤔

When my grandpa died in 2015 we wanted to bury him at one cemetery in yaba the caretakers told us about the cheap grave stuff but warned us that if we took the cheap one other caretakers will remove my grandpa and sell the grave I guess we were lucky to get that info from them we opted for the high priced one and we had to put tiles and a short gate there plus we go once in a while to visit that place and even tip them over there to help us watch over the grave

Bro it happens everywhere in.the world not only Africa
Even in d d US except you pay more for years that way thy will not pull d person out for another..
Yes but brothers don’t get killed at their wedding like that at all they been plotting all along💯
Here in the Philippines the urban poor rent a concrete tomb. Once they fail to pay rent the dead is removed. In the public cemeteries you will walk on piles of broken concrete and garbage, and even uncollected bones. And the stench of the deceased from inside the haphazard vertical concrete tombs, mixes with the smell of the piles of garbage in the area.
Try searching "Navotas Public Cemetery".
I just watched a video on Navotas Public cemetery and everything you said is true.
I just wish we would normalize cremation instead of desecrating the dead in the name of money

Yes
yes I buried my dad inside his house..
Burying inside the house..OMG this is scaring !!!
Really now. Africa is a straight up shit show I take it?
WHATTTTTT?????
This is quite revealing. The other time, we went to bury a Church member's dad in one of the cemeteries in a Nigerian State Capital. I was shocked to find the place littered with dug up remains of caskets, skulls and bones. It dawned on me that the man we went there to bury might, after a short while, not be in his grave anymore too. A burial place is supposed to be the final resting place for the remains of the dead, but sadly Nigerian cemeteries appears not to be so. The truth is that those buried in cemeteries are mostly people that had no personal or family property where they could be interred. The general feeling among my own people is that to bury your loved ones in a public cemetery is like having their corpses thrown away.
In south Africa we have a culture (I don't know where it comes from) every year during easter we go to the graveyard and clean them and put flowers or just clean it and if we find you loved one grave not clean we look at you as if you have committed sin and when the graveyard is full the village king or municipality gave the people land where they can use to bury thier loved one
I am South African too based in Sweden and Sweden also have the same practice

This is an eye opener the lessons I learnt 42 yrs ago we had a big farmland by the cemetery in ogun state and my SIBLINGS we had a TRAP that caught a big BUSH MEAT . We took the Bush meat home burn it and to clean it what we found inside was shocking.
Human hair braids with OWU a special made things to do hair and also artificial nails with colors on it. This means the animal eat the flesh of the deceased in the burial grounds.
Since then my family decides not to bury anyone in the cemetery. My parents are deceased they were buried home .

Funny I observed n said exactly same thing. First time at this cemetery was 5 years ago. Flew in from California and the impression I got just from the funeral arrangements already got my spider senses tingling. Just the way Nigerians think n do things. I recall there is an office, annexed to a small church, then a garden before the grounds itself. What struck me peculiarly, was the hype around the Lagosians about this being the premium ground for burials. They showed me all the wealthy folks buried here as if this is something with which to aspire. The weirdest experience. Also putting the body in the folks were all snap chatting and instashaming and fakebooking toe event with their cell phones. I sat at the garden texting my girlfriend back in Cali about how I wanted to be cremated after I pass. The whole experience was jacked up for me but they reassured me that I was at the best cemetery in the city and only the best of the best have their families buried here. I didn’t feel that sentiment at all considering I research sustainable ways of dispensing human remains to fertilize soils. From dust we return to dust.
He does not have to be buried in a cemetery. He can be buried in vaults and gardens which is beautiful. A single vault in 2019 a single vault cost N1.5million.
That amount can be given to charity, imagine meeting your creator knowing you left people around you that are needy all because you were scared about what will happen to the body that your spirit has left? I understand that I dont want people to use my remains for bad but I rather spend that money on the needy and my union with God will be magical🙏🏾

I believe that there are 3 main reasons (amongst others) why it appears that the dead are not cared for in Nigeria:
1. Usually, our dead are not buried in close proximity to our cities of residence, and many are even buried in their hometowns, making frequent visits pretty complicated.
2. Many customs and traditions do not permit any form of connection between the living and the dead.
3. We don't have much of a maintenance culture in Nigeria.
As for where the dug- up bones are buried, I wouldn't be surprised if every city has a mass grave where these bones are deposited.

Where I am from in South Africa, the grave sites have been said to be full. A lot of people now berry on their own land next to their homes instead of common grave sites. If it happens here in South Africa, it would be likely in the government owned grave sites, not likely in the community owned or family owned sites.
Yes, that sounds more cultural and better. In Nigerian rural areas and small towns etc. they bury their dead within the family compound, next to the home. Then they can look after the grave site and keep it clean and tidy. I'm not sure if they have big public cemeteries in Nigerian rural areas and smaller towns.
Daniel, I'm sending so much love to you because I appreciate you so much! This cemetery issue is serious. So much of life seems to be like this! You have described the vicious cycle of selfishness that seems to be our human nature. We actually have to learn how to care about people that we don't know. We tend to be selfish towards people we don't need to care about, if you know what I mean. People don't really care what happens to others because it is not happening to them. However, in this situation, everyone will eventually die, so it will eventually be an issue for everyone. So, everyone really should care alot about things like this.

When a person dies , only the body dies. When you die in this world , your eternity begins in another. I have died before and I went to a place where I don't wish even my greatest enemy to go. It is through the great mercy of God why I am alive today. The only way you can be sure that when you die you are guaranteed to go to heaven is by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and live a life pleasing to God. If you don't you will go to hell , the place I went. You don't have to go there , God is not going to send anyone there . Each of us is responsible for where we spend eternity.
