I watched it every time it came on.Those guy were my first Motocross Heroes.Theses guys were the early Legends of Motocross.I had a poster of Roger DeCoster on my bedroom wall,Bob Hannah and Kent Howerton on the closet doors.
That was my favorite track to race on. Indian dunes was a good track to practice on. One day in winter at Saddleback after a good rain, there was a huge mud hole in that hollow that led to the downhill before the ski jump on the other side of the valley. Well my friend was taking pictures of that area and got a shot of a guy doing a flying "W" over the bars after his bike just stopped from the mud. He submitted the photo to Dirt Bike Magazine for their last page "Crash and Burn" photo and got it. "Blurry Photo by Joel Mayer" it said. We were maybe 16 at that time. Pretty cool for him. That was maybe in 1972. I was riding an older 1969 Bultaco Pursang then. I started my racing a year later on my CZ 250.
Very cool! I bought one of these CR250s as soon as they were available. It was nearly impossible to get a pair of Fox Air Shox at the beginning of the season due to overwhelming demand. I got mine with one of those friend-of-a-friend deals.
Don't know but that was my class in 77 on YZ250. What was it 40 45 minute motos, just remember summer was hot dry hard and slippery. Got hurt that year ACL on left knee I was 17 I think, I stopped racing bikes after that. Got a foot long scar on the side of my knee but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm 64 now and miss those days.
I watched part of this hoping to see M Tripes. It's like no footage of ANY of his races were ever submitted to the tube. I've got to admit that watching Smith was uninspiring.
On Modern Machinery or Antiquated Vintage Bikes with Drum Breaks & Twin Shockers!? These Guys were the Roczens & Tomac's of their Day! They were Paid Pro's! Maybe you are a Good Rider but just like Boxing- there are Levels to this stuff!👍😁
I remember every once in a while they would have motocross on Wild world of sports. I was glued to the TV. Lol
me also. finally all the guys you read about in motocross action magazine were on t.v. it was surreal!

"Wide" World of Sports yes I remember it was amazing ! Of course we couldn't rewind the best parts back then 😆
It may not look like much but those Dudes are hauling the mail.. back when there was a lot of mail to haul!😁👍🍻
Hell Yeah the Glory Days.👍
Saddleback was a great track and so many of the top pros would practice and race there. I remember getting tons of autographs from guys there.

Even though the clip has no sound I can definitely 'hear' it!

Man that kidney belt sure brings back old memorys
I raced 250 kaws back in the days before the single shock rears and you needed that belt !!
Down Under (Australia) we never had "kaws", but the kidney belt was definitely mandatory PPE when racing my Suzuki RMs.
Great video, thanks
Interesting within the next 3 or 4 years of this video the sport changed a great deal....
Love this 💥…I’ve seen several Vids of SB…but This one shows Most of the Track…I Wish I coulda been there…Who was the Rider ?
Webco Hill I do remember that that building with the windows what I remember the top five guys could run the pro class
Looks like Saturday Saddleback, 250 Intermediate. I could very well be in that race.

Is number 14 Texan Stevie Wise or Warren Reid?
Marty smith.
14 if factory racer is marty tripes
@Steve Beckers ... I raced my 1978 Wheelsmith 450 Maico at Saddleback. I still have the bike. Was this a CMC or CRC race?

Was #14 a intermediate or novice? Cool video 😎
Intermediate 250
@@stevebeckers5582 that would have been my guess... intermediate.
I think 14 is Texan Stevie Wise.
Back then, the tracks were mostly hardpack. And if there was rain, they would get really slippery.
Does anyone know who #14 is?
Looks very much like someone I used to know.
Tried looking for name on the jersey but nothing.
thnx
Jim Beckers
How would the guys nowadays ride a track like that?
Riders were better back in those days, had to work the power band and not very good suspension ,
Good riders of today would still be good on classic machinery if that's all they had to work with.
@@this_is_a_tiny_town They would but maybe not better
Damn concrete track!
Fall down and go to the hospital!
Sinmo😃🤣😃🤣😃🤣💌🥳💯😃💯🤣😃🤣💌🤣😃🤣😃🤣😃🤣😃🤣😃
Without sound this video is soulless.
I could only race in Arizona but not too brag, I could have beaten these guys.

Too bad you never got outta Arizona then 🙄
@@mikeandrews1899 Were not all so ignorant, I'm from Arizona too and would never say anything like that, this guy is probably a kid
@@williamsherman1089 I believed him 🤔 and wished he got out of zona , for our enjoyment !
Where is the hannah ?
