When you first acquire Saavedro's journal, it has three blank sheets of paper at the back. Eventually your character draws the three Lesson Age symbols on them, and they disappear from the journal one by one as you use them. I never noticed this detail until someone else who was playing it on Twitch or CZcams pointed it out recently.

I get so emotional hearing the opening of Myst 3, especially when that music starts, god it makes me tear up. I grew up with the Myst series, my grandma and I played myst and riven together, she sat me on her lap and I "helped" . Myst 3 was the first I played on my own and every time its like playing it the first time. I'm still in love. The bonus track, that I feel like not enough people know or talk about, is fucking great. A tribute to the era.

Hi Jordan, I absolutely loved your Riven Retrospective and had it playing in the background while I worked from home. I want to say thank you for playing the Myst games, as I feel they're sort of underappreciated. While Myst is highly regarded as influential, and everyone writes articles about the influence it has, I feel there's not a lot of attention being paid to the world building, the story, the art direction, and the following games in the series like Riven, Exile, so on, are left by the wayside while Myst gets the most attention. Thank you for playing these games, albeit it quickly, and discussing their history, development and impact. Love your work!

I think the later games hit when the genre as a whole was out of the limelight--even as a huge fan of Myst and Riven, I skipped 4 and 5 for a couple decades. Ok I've just binged these first 3 myst game retrospectives and I'm genuinely blown away by how good of a job you've done! I'm familiar enough with the games to really appreciate how organized you've been while going through these (especially Riven) - taking us on a path that flows, showing us enough of the puzzles so that we see all the pieces/understand them but not so much that you're wasting any time, filling in gaps with explanations on the lore, behind the scenes, etc. I'm so eager to watch your Revelation video but I've actually been inspired to replay through the whole series and discover the fourth one for myself! I would love for you to make more of these kind of videos in the future for puzzle/adventure games, it's been so much fun :)

Amazing! The thing I love about your retrospectives is in comparison to any other play through / let's plays on CZcams, you clearly love these games to the extent that a hardcore fan does... making references about the Behind The Scenes film for this game, talking about the lore in an easy to understand way for newcomers, but still being incredibly immersed and educated in the beautiful ages of Myst... and not to mention how you know almost everything about Riven like the back of your hand.
Left a pretty extensive comment on your Myst play through, and was really keen to see you do this, so thank you! It's nice to just talk about this somewhat under-talked about series nowadays, and hear different people's opinions on the games / series as a whole. The start and end of the video, where you have an overview and closing thoughts, are the highlight for me, but the whole thing is just a fun, relaxing watch. Much appreciated Jordan, and from one major Myst fan to another, thanks again!

Your videos have been very enjoyable to watch and a great help. With a little nudge, I was able to figure out Myst and loved it. Riven was on another level and blew my mind away, in terms of both the puzzles but also how unbelievably amazing it was. Myst 3, on the other hand, just gave me headaches. I've just finished this part in my exploration of the Myst series, and one of the things spurring me on was that I'd get to watch your video about it afterwards :) I started playing through the series under duress from my Patreon subscribers, first remembering the series as obtuse and nonsensical, but I've grown to really enjoy where the story goes. This instalment didn't even have any puzzles where I felt I was just fiddling - everything had a logic to it, although perhaps by now I'm just getting used to how the Myst series wants the player to think. I needed three hints but all of them were just to point me towards locations I'd missed - the hollow trunk in Edanna, the water wheel in Voltaic and the cliffside door(!) in Amateria. It's possible that with the fixed view of the previous games I might not have missed them, but Edanna in particular would have been even more confusing if I hadn't been able to turn around and see exactly which angle each path was taking me on...
"A bit over the top" with the soundtrack, right enough - I was absolutely blown away by the chant when the Myst III title appears in the intro, it's like you're listening to Rhapsody or Blind Guardian or something :) I'll watch this with interest!

Thanks for doing this video. I've been going through them as I play the game - both for the occasional hint as well as more of the backstory since I don't read as much of the journals as I go along to fill in those details. It also turns out you can do the balance ball puzzle by sending a partial ball on the near pivot as well - so I guess they just do the math to allow it. Now onto Myst IV...

The artists for these games truly understand "steampunk design". I can't help but think their taste in color combinations was influenced by Kai Krauss. Anyway, would love to build a tiny house community based on the various Myst structures.

i LOVE these games.... these worlds are so magical.. it actually started to cry when i played them.. i know it sounds strange but i feel they must have been "picked up" by the creators - from a place far away... i hope heaven or another planet looks like this .. and that we can be incarnated in one of these places.. but with a more positive energy though.. Lol.. the so lonesome feeling... Thank you for the great video :)

Another excellent playthrough w/out much dilly dallying! 😁
I'm really glad you provided this, as I don't have 40+ hours of time any more to get thru a game.
I will check out your playthrough of Myst IV later this week. I can't wait.
I will also buy Myst 2022 and try to get thru it on my own.
I cheated my way thru Riven in the late 90's, but that's about it. No Myst I.
I really hope they provide a Riven remake, as one is long overdue!
If no studio has funds, perhaps it could be crowdsourced?

Good news! Unless something has changed, Cyan is working with a group of fans to develop a 3D version of Riven. There have not been many details shared, but theoretically it is still being worked on.

About the red valves. You can just count the stripes on the meter 41 in total: turn on 3 valves on the upper floor (1+1+1 stripe each) 2 valves on the second floor 4+4 each. Amd lastly 3 valves on the 1st floor. 41 stripes in total. The dial should be on the red stripe now^ is the amount different in each game just like in riven at some puzzles? Then just count the stripes😊

Great video. Exile was one of my favorite games as a kid. I did the strange thing and played this one first. I was a kid at the time and my brother had already played Myst and Riven. We played Myst 3 together when it came out. Then I went on to do Riven and Myst on my own later. In that reverse order! So it's only fitting that I watched this video first and now I will go watch your videos on Riven and Myst, haha! Riven is my all time favorite game of all time, so I'm excited to see what you think of it. I'm also looking forward to seeing your thoughts on Myst 4 and Uru once you finish those, are you planning on playing Uru? Myst 5 is sort of skipable for me, but if you loved Myst and Riven I'd still play it if only for the story. Cheers!

    • @JordanRogers85
      @JordanRogers85 Před 3 lety +1

Thank you for the comment! That order is rather interesting, but I do think it works? The story is a nice motivator but the puzzles certainly don’t spoil each other in the games. And yes, I sure hope I can find time to do Myst 4, Uru, and 5. Time will tell!

Myst 3 is the only game I've actually beaten myself.
I am obsessed with the lore, I just couldn't figure out Myst 1 as a kid.
I think it definitely was way more accessible, the puzzles were more logical in my opinion.
That being said I wouldn't say the D'ni constructs and Ages are totally logical.
A lot of contraptions you see throughout seem functional but engineered more for subversion than ease of use; which I think is a narrative bonus. Ludonarrative harmony if you will.

"Watch where you splash, Atrus, that's a lot of ink."
It looks like it's all on paper. For calligraphy/fountain pens there is an ink blotting paper that's especially for cleaning up extra ink that's on the tip of a pen, to catch drips, or extra ink on paper. It may be that's what's under the ink bottle, or maybe it's a just thick piece of paper.

Ok. Just watched the Voltaic age. And it looked very familiar. But I thought I had only attempted Riven years ago.
Was there a sneak peak of Voltaic as part of either Real Myst or a later drop of Riven?
Don’t think I ever bought Exile but I know I did walk around Voltaic and saw the gondola. But never saw the intro stuff on the home world.
    Really confused.
