Thanks Dave, now I'll know what to do when I service mine! Great channel by the way!
Paul
Great! Glad the video was helpful. Thanks so much for watching
Awsum video 🙃🚂😎👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you sir!!
Nice work Dave very helpful. Especially like the led headlight.
Thanks! It’s so much nicer with a nice bright headlamp
Informative yes! 😊
Glad you think so!
No growling, just smooth running. 👍🏻🇺🇸
Like butter!
I'm always amazed at the confidence you show as you dive into a project, Dave. Even though you make it sound like you're searching for direction, you seem to know exactly what to do to get the job done. It's quite magical, really. I know it's not as easy as the video makes it seem, but when it all comes together, it's so satisfying to watch. Thanks for making us your guests once again.
Thanks so much! Yeah the editing certainly helps it seem like I know what I’m doing!
Good video Dave! Don’t know that I would be so brave to perform that level of service. Next time.
Thanks! Just go step by step slowly and take pictures along the way if they helps. I have really never regretted taking a postwar engine apart. More modern one, oh yeah, but not the old stuff
Another "Go To" service video, Dave! Thanks for all your helpfulness. T4
Thanks T4. Hope you are well. Thanks for stopping by:
It is weirdly satisfying to watch an older engine get cleaned up and running again. Nice Job and Thanks for sharing with us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would have liked to see the inside of the shell. Good video.
I should probably redo this video, it’s been a long time, then I could add that
Very nice. So much easier than a 2026 and its siblings, where you have to disconnect the side rods, pistons and a dowel pin to remove the body. The cylinder assembly is a separate casting. It is much easier with the pistons, or cylinders, cast as a one piece frame, as on your 2036.
Thanks. Yeah I dislike having to remove side rods just to get a shell off.
Good work!
Thanks!
Cool! I have one but I never really had to do anything like this.
Thanks. I wouldn’t say I had to do it but I really wanted to! It would be interesting to get one in really bad shape and see if it could be brought back
Well done Dave!
Another 736 is happy to be on the rails again.
Enjoy. 😊
Thanks! It had been a little rough lately, I’m so happy to have it back in top form
nice
Thanks 👍
A good and timely video Dave! I'm planning on going "under the skin" of my own 736 since it's been a while and this video's a great refresher course.
One thing I do with a strip-down of an engine is remove the front and rear trucks, getting them out of the way makes things a little easier, for me anyway. Nothing else I can add, you covered it all.
Thanks for posting!
Thanks. I’d say I take off the front and rear trucks half the time, really depends on the engine NA day mood. Sometimes I can’t be bothered with one more screw! Haha
Love these practical demo videos, seemed to be a time when you moved away from them? Glad to see them back
Thanks! Yeah post Covid I just didn’t have the energy or focus to do them. It’s still a frustratingly slow and sloppy process but I’m getting better. Besides, these engines aren’t going to service themselves!
Nice job. It's always worth the trouble to take them all apart and clean them real good. Looks like Nick was running that engine with all the smoke fluid residue! Just kidding, just kidding!
Haha, he does like his smoke fluid! Maybe he’s been a bad influence on me 🤔
This is a very well designed engine. Also user friendly to rebuild and clean. These old Lionel engines are easy to locate parts when required. It seems Lionel and the aftermarket have stepped up making parts available and affordable. Makes one wonder if the modern stuff today will have the same senerial in the future.
I love this one, simple, strong, and well made. I could use a couple more of them!
Ok guys. Working on a 2055 that didn't work. Fixed everything. New smoke unit guts. Only smoked a little. Running on 6 volts without loco body. Aha. Put body on and added 7 rolling stock. Now pulling 10 volts. Smokes great. Duh🎉
Sometimes it’s something obvious! I’ve don’t things like that many times
My favorite lionel engine, nice video
Thanks. It is a really good engine
Looking good Dave. Alway love the repair tutorials, and the engine seems to be running very smoothly with its Pennsy heavyweights.
Thanks! It’s running so much better now. I should remember to take a before video before I service them
You do a great job showing and explaining how to work on these trains. If I ever buy any, I know I have a great resource for help.
Thank you! I’d be happy to help!
Another great video Dave. I don't own a Berkshire but now I know how to service one of I am lucky enough to find one as nice as yours!😉
Thanks! It’s a good one to have. A very solid and dependable engine.
The Best Lionel Engine Ever Made! Mine unfortunately has part of the window slits broke off. I only had to repair the motor once and it’s been running since then. It’s almost like it could just keep going forever without any problems.
It probably could keep going forever. Such a great piece
Are those the Williams 60’ Madison passenger cars? They look great with the PW sized 736!
Yes they are - they are a perfect match in my opinion 😀
What is the spec on the LED? There are many types and different voltages. Thanks for the great video.
Don’t recall specifically, they are meant for up to 19v I think. I just bought what was cheap on Amazon.
Good job. Does your 736 have Magnatraction?
Sure does. I do believe all the 736s had Magnetraction.
The 726 did not, and if there was a 726r or 736r from during the Korean War, those would also not have it.
Nice video. Question? My boiler front light is black. Yours is silver. Do you know why there is a difference. Thanx.😊😊😊
Thanks! I don’t know. Maybe they did different versions, maybe mine or yours is a replacement? I’m not sure. Any other engine I have with a light like that is black.
@@dagryffynhobby thanx
Hi Dave, Thank you for the video. I recently acquired a 1950 Berkshire 736. I have taken it apart, it was filthy. On your video, at the 5:45 mark you talk about the contact and isolator with spacers. My isolator,is broken in half at the gold conductor and I did not see any spacers in there. Can these parts be purchased? Thank you for all you do with the hobby!
Hi, glad the video was helpful. All the parts should be available. I would recommend contacting Henning’s trains in Lansdale PA. I’m sure they can help
Thank you
As always Dave, another fine video. I would like to know where to get an LED such as the one you installed (I never liked the shine of the old bulbs shining through the seam myself). I have the same engine and I would like to do the LED modification like you did. Thanks!
Thank you. There are probably many options, but I used a soft white 3mm led from evemodel, purchased on Amazon. You can search for model train led and it should come up. It looks so much better like this!
Thanks so much!
where do you get the LEDs for these locomotives?
I get all my LEDs off of Amazon. Just search for led for model train. I believe they are evemodel leds
Say, on rewatching this video. I've seen videos that said they had a scale 2-8-4. Is the one you have a 0 scale scale model?
The 736 was not a scale model. It is a larger engine but not scale.
There are plenty of 2-8-4s in more modern times that are scale
Hi Dave just hit me a 736 with three windows. Have you ever replaced one of the flag holders mounted on the front next to the hand rail?
Love the three window version.
I have not, but I’ve thought about it. I’ve also thought of adding them to my MPC era Hudson’s. They have the holes just no posts.
@@dagryffynhobby I have ordered new posts to replace the broken one on my loco. Thinking I would drill a small hole through the bottom and tap it out with a punch.
This engine was designed to use smoke pellets NOT liquid smoke- as you found out:)
Designed for, yes, but either can really be used
Nah- liquid gums up- as you found out. Stay with the pellets- like Lionel intended.
Great video -- now you've got me contemplating upgrading my small but noble fleet of Berks to LEDs. That LED looks really great on your 736 -- a question - exactly what LED did you use? (voltage/color) etc. There are so many to choose from!
Thanks! I used Amazon, these are 3mm soft white by evemodel. If you search for “led for model trains” they should come up.
Thanks, Dave!
