2016 Mazda CX-5 - Redline: Review

- As Mazda's best-selling vehicle in its US line-up, the 2016 CX-5 refresh is one of the most important updates made this year. It's slick combination of fun driving dynamics, impressive fuel-efficiency, and a nicely appointed cabin make this 2016 model one of the best compact SUV's on the market. Only those who favor a softer ride and more power may find some competing rivals more appealing.

6 years and 33,000 miles later still loving my Soul Red Metallic 2016.5 CX-5 GT
It's 2018, we test drove a used 2016 CX5 and liked it. We came home watched your video and went back to the dealership and purchased the vehicle. Thank you an honest informational video. We appreciate it.
Still like it?
@Marvin Hunt I am actually looking at 16's right now to save some $$$, 6 months in do you still love it?
how are you so far with the car. is the car good. expensive to maintain etc. i am looking to buy myself one and im currentlly deciding between mazda 6 and cx5 both from 2016
I just bought one and I love it.
Still loving it?
Just purchased this vehicle! Red color and black interior I love it. I was looking at 2018 but I liked the look of the 2016 better. I’m 21 and the first vehicle I financed so you can say I’m really happy with my purchase. I’m a mom too and I hate bigger vehicles. My previous car was a Mazda 3 2009 sedan that I paid cash for in 2015. It had 140,000 when I bought and this four years I had it not a single issue. That’s why I decided I wanted to continue with Mazda.
This review is so helpful. Thanks! Just purchased it today with 114k miles and still rides great in 2022
Congrats. Does it feel like it lacks power as he says?
@@ebenezerkittoe9115thanks!! no mine doesn't feel that way
I glad that you finally afford that car after 6 years
@@yournightmare9999 um I didn't need a car 6 years ago so you can mind the business that's pays you.. fuck off
@@yournightmare9999 That sounds like a half-compliment lol. Sounds a little passive-judgmental.
The back seat is 40/20/40, not 60/40.
That's a big deal. It's a GREAT feature,
I think I actually like the lines of the 2016 better than the 2019 or 2020
is nissan murano 2016 better than this mazda?
Agreed. Which is why I just bought a pre-owned 2016.
it handles way better too
god Mazda makes good looking cars. I don't know how they're going to top this design language for the next generation of cars
Dude are you blind? Have you seen the new Hyundai Tucson? If you have then, you must have a bad taste in style?
Aki Padre Please don't waste your time or mine. Your ignorance is a test of patience, and I'd rather not take the bait
+maximus9401 for about 4-5 years Mazda CX-5 shape has not changed. Maybe they need to borrow the person who designed the new Hyundai Tucson😊
Yeah, true I don't have a hyundai tucson, I actually drive an Audi Q7 for your information so that doesn't make me bias. Yes, I do turn my head aswell when I see a mazda cx5 on the road, I tell myself "what's the deal with that grill", haha!! Yuk!!
Maybe I might trade in my Q7 for a hyundai tucson, they have the same technology anyways and looks better aswell?
after watching review ... went to Mazda dealership and bought one
God this car is so sexy. I love the new LED DRL's they have in the headlights. And Mazda interiors are so nice when compared to competition. And thats not even supposed to be the Mazda selling point. Most fun to drive vehicles on the road.
You're fast becoming my go to car review channel. Good work. I enjoy the flow and presentation. Good job!
I don't understand why people are bashing Mazda so bad they have came a long way and they are very reliable as matter of fact they're more reliable than Honda and Toyota right now
Ik right?
Right
This car when it's on ,you need to check twice because of how quiet the engine is you think it's off
I just got a 2016 c-x5 a couple months ago as my first car as a teenager. I love it and so do all my friends! I’m a huge car fanatic so I’m very critical of cars and I could not be happier!
Its near the end of 2019, still liking the cx5?
what i’m looking at rn and this gets me super excited about it
I like this exterior better than the 2017
Not liking this fish eye perspective, just my opinion though. Also seems to be a lot of distortion 'flexing' throughout.
the CX 5 is fantastic! everything said in the review is pretty spot on. I chose the CX 5 over the Acura RDX. While the Acura had more of a luxury feel, the overall ride and handling was flat and numb. The Mazda a far more sporty fun ride and has everything you need in a crossover.
Its near the end of 2019, still going well?
I enjoy your reviews. You do the best job reviewing vehicles. I bought a 2016 Mazda CX-5 and enjoying it a lot. I traded in a 2008 Equinox V-6 with 185 hp that was averaging 20.3 mpg if memory is correct. This Skyactiv 4cyl with 184hp is averaging 27.2 mpg. Very impressed and you are right, the engine is fine for 99% of the driving a "normal" driver does.
have you had any issues with your transmission? I'm having issues with mine
@@millardc6768 I traded in my 2016 last March for a new 2021. At the time of trade in I had about 91k on the vehicle and no transmission problems.
OMG there's no CVT!?!?!? Yay
Carlos I know right!!!!!!!
My thoughts exactly.
The cx5 has been a great car for me. I highly recommend it.
Reliable??
kevin ant Yes, 56k miles now. Only problem is the bluetooth module in the stereo.
Its near the end of 2019, still going well?
@@Calm_Energy I have a 2013 model with 110K km and all is good
My Cx-5 has been godly reliable
Another great review Sofyan and Redline review!
Nice video review of our refreshed 2016 Mazda CX5. One thing I wanted to point out however is you mentioned that the seats are a 60/40 split when in fact they are a 40/20/40 split in the GT model and are 60/40 in the entry level model (which is a GX up here in Canada) other than that you did an excellent job of pointing out the features of the Mazda CX5.
Just got one today....it's beautiful 😍
I enjoy watching with the handheld camera a little more than the head cam. The new view seems a little awkward but I'm glad to see that you are trying new things on the channel.
I bought a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 Sport back in July '18 with 4K miles. It now has 22K miles. Overall, I love this vehicle. PROS: Sport Mode, I just turn it on whenever I need that extra boost going up a steep on-ramp or merging onto a freeway. It's probably my favorite part about the vehicle. With that said, acceleration feels strong even without sport mode. The seats are very comfortable, and on a recent roadtrip I didn't feel fatigued at all. Suspension rides a bit stiff but I like it. --and now onto CONS: I dont like the engine noise or the transmission noise, specially on startup, it sounds like an old Ford power steering noise, ugh. Also when idling, I can hear AND feel the AC compressor coming on and off. There's some rattling noise in the trunk that I cant pinpoint. Brakes squeak at times. Lastly, totally not the car's fault, but washing it and keeping the black interior inside clean is a battle that's raged on since I purchased it.
dmascorro76 I have the 2016.5 Touring and can also hear and feel the AC compressor. It is quite annoying. Also, cabin noise when on the highway is quite loud. I did get the optional Bose sound system so that does help somewhat. Otherwise, I love the way it drives and handles. I just reached 20k miles and it drives just as good as it did when I first bought it. By the way, I recently test drove a 2019 and I have to admit, I like the 2016.5 better. Not sure why but it just feels more solid and fun to drive.
Had to come back to this review to remind myself I wasn't crazy that after 103K miles on our 2016 GT, the suspension was starting to feel floaty and under-damped. Bought a set of OEM rear shocks and KYB front quick struts, can't wait to get the sharp handling back!
Sorry some of your comments are so unappreciative! This review was very helpful. Thank you!
Oh and good job trying new things to improve the way you review cars. Hope you land on a sweet spot that everyone will like
Great review. Some parts don't apply to us in Australia though as we do get active lane assist, memory seats etc
Correction the back seats are 40-20-40 split. A unique feature of this car that stands out compared to competitors.
very nice review style and music.
Nice review, but the reviewer made an error when describing the fold down seats in the back. They are not a 60-40 split...but actually 40-20-40 split, which is more upscale and nice for those families who haul long items, such as skis or snowboards in the car.
Excellent review. Very accessible to me as a person without a lot of knowledge about cars. I love this car, I'm sold.
great review as usual.
Reg. the moon roof operation - It makes complete sense to have coz it allows the user to decide if he/she wants the moon roof partially open.
+Stephen Paul ya idk how he thinks thats stupid. Maybe you don't want the wind blowing in your face but want a rice breeze coming from the roof.
Exactly, that make complete sense. Thanks.
Stephen Paul most cars have both types of operation. for our pilot, it's half click for opening as big or small as you want, and full click for all the way open.
Mazda doesn't work that way, at least for 2016
Just as I was thinking - it is safer to have it that way because if it just fully closes with one touch then what if something gets caught up there like a hand or something else - it is safer to have to continue pushing to close it fully at the choosing of the person.
Thanks for the review.
Nice Review! Also I think the reason the moon roof doesn't AUTO close is so that if anyone stuck their head out and someone accidentally tried to close it they wouldn't get their head stuck in the moon roof. Not something that happens everyday but I know I have stuck my head out of the moon roof when I was younger so I guess it makes sense.
Just bought a 2014 i love it!
Sweet review! Are you going to review the 2016 Tucson anytime soon?
Just bought a used 2016 after owning a Nissan Murano...I love the CX-5! It is very fun to drive!
Just sold house and got eye on 2016 sport diesel automatic with the cream leather . SHOULD I BUY ?
Great review 🔥
i kinda prefer you holding the camera and showing the features of the car. But great review!
+IcyAlex23 Same. I couldn't hear the door closing very well because the mic in the headcam peaked.
+MrDrProf_Patrick - Minecraft, CS:GO, & More I would just go to the dealer and close one myself. Nothing quite like hearing the sound in person, if it's something important to you
My mom got a used 2016.5 GS. It’s my favourite car to drive, and so fun to take for a spin. Granted I don’t haven’t driven many anyways, but it’s better than all sedans I’ve driven. 09 Elantra, 20 civic EX, 19 Forte, 19 Cruze
Also very fuel efficient. Getti
You can also get the LED headlights and tail lights with the Touring model with the tech pkg. Just bought one, me and my wife love it!
Only have refilled my new CX-5 Touring once, so take that with a grain of salt. Did lots of research prior to buying this car..Wife, even made an excel speadsheet to compare Outback, Rav 4 and CX-5. There is little to no road noise.. Plus most of us listen to music anyways.. Wish it had more cargo room, and memory seats, but I can't complain for the price, including technology package. Love the power, where power is needed, smooth ride and look. FYI, free navigation updates for 3 years. Bose stereo sounds incredible and now don't mind being stuck in traffic! Test drive one, you won't be disappointed. One more thing, read and watch all the popular review forums, sites, youtube. They are not being paid to praise how well Mazda has done on their 2016 CX-5.
I love my 2016 CX-5, I am like a kid with a new driver's license looking for an excuse to drive somewhere.
Its near the end of 2019, still going well?
Pretty nice presentation!
I am seriously considering this vehicle. Is the Stereo in the Sport model a Quality unit, or basic (ie not great?)? Thanks!
Just got this exact same car but with black interior
When can we see your review on the all-new cx-5? Can't wait to hear what you think.
Are you recording at Columbia MD? I lived there, lovely place
Great video. I want one!
Can you tell me please what is the name of the intro song?
I enjoy many of your reviews. The only issue I have is that the camera behind you allows the rear view mirror block off a major portion of the road view. The camera should be moved further to the left side, directly behind you, as if it's the driver's view. Thanks.
Nice job for this new style of review. I was really liking the old style but this is not bad.
+Henry Pacheco commenting the same thing 96 times doesn't make any sense.
Great review.
Sofyan, your channel is awesome! We’re in the market to replace our CRV and I went straight here for the CX-5 review.
I’m an editor/colourist working for a video creation company based in Vancouver. I hope 1 day, we can cross paths and work on car stuff together.
Good cx-5
ได้ขับแล้วชอบมาก
I looked at Tuscon and will be test driving the top model tomorrow. I'm testing everything I can before getting the CX-5 GT AWD. I like a number of the features on the Tuscon like the turbo and the pano roof, but the reviewer also hammered the dead spot when you accelerate from a stop and he didn't like the DCT as much because it was a cheaper version. So, I will be trying to compare the acceleration of both.
CX5 or mazda3 hatch? I love both but the CX5 has a bit more space but the 3 hatch looks better overall and it has a HUD, sure not the best but at least you have one. Which one would you think is more refined? And which would you rather own
The passenger window and sunroof don’t close automatically because it’s a safety feature.
First portion was well paced. Once the head cam is on, you start talking too quickly again. Can tell you're trying to slow down & pace yourself. Keep up the good work.
The presenter was great; very well spoken.
Nice review and explanation on the features. Would like your feedback on the CRV 2016 versus the CX-5 2016. How would the ride quality, comfort, wind/engine/tire insulation compared between the 2 models?
+Boon Khong Foo The mazda will handle a lot better. It is more fun to drive and has more personality. They added more sound insulation in the 2016 models to make them more quieter. The Crv is more numb and ot as sporty. The Crv has slightly less wind and engine noise and slightly softer ride. The Cx5 feels like you are driving a sporty car. Thee cx5 looks 10xs better to boot.
You mentioned intelligent access. Does the 2016 grand touring have intelligent access? Will the car unlock if the key is within a certain proximity?
If you are shopping used 2016 CX5 you may want to make sure it is a "2016.5" which fixed significant issues with the first CX5s of the year....at least research first and find out....and then print out that information and use it against the seller to get a deep discount?
Hi, I've watch a couple of your reviews I kinda like it but just for recommendation I think peoples like me want to knows about cargo / rear seat spaces would be more helpful
good review but from video maker to CZcamsr, the active camera has a wide angle lens which gives a fish of eye appearance which distorts the way the vehicle really looks and size of the interior. You should try using a small video camera or even some of the Samsung pocket cameras or Sony pocket cameras are good and don't have a dslr lens. again. that's just a recommendation though
Any idea when the 2016 Rav4 Hybrid will be out?
Nice review, bro. I think you should have also mentioned the "manual" mode on the automatic transmissions, as well as the little "sport" button that gives the car an added kick in the pants for passing, etc.
Please, make a review of Mazda CX-5 GT vs Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6T, both AWD. Can't make my decision.
You didn't mention sport mode and how it enhances acceleration.
please review the 2016 Tucson next
Was set on a 2016 Jeep Cherokee High Altitude V6 until I saw the dealership had one of these. Similar mileage, similar price. Will take this out tomorrow, and again in the Jeep. Great review, especially considering the Jeep's 9-speed transmission has had some terrible reviews.
What crossover of 2016 would you buy ? The Mazda CX-5 , the Toyota rav4 or the Honda CR-V . ?
I had to the same conflict when buying a car...When comparing the 2016 cars I went with the Mazda. I didn’t like the way the RAV4 accelerated and the Honda features weren’t as fitting for me as the Mazda was.
Where did you get the rear cargo cover?
This vs 2017 Subaru Forester XT Touring?
just test drive the 2016 and 2017 models. the exterior on the 2017 Looks more luxurious but the interior on the 2016 to me was a much nice layout
In my opinion, I feel the music during the opening shots of your videos tends to be a bit overzealous... I'm also not sure if I like the new camera being used - it has such a wide angle lens that things appear quite distorted.
review the 2017 escape
can’t decide if i want this or ‘17 Touring
Can you review the CX-3?
What about the visibility out the back? the side pillars and the headrests seem to obstruct much of it. When backing the camera will compensate, but what about visibility when driving?
I agree when putting in reverse the rear visibility when you turn your head is minimum. I hv to remove the headrest to get better view I don’t always trust the camera bcs I don’t feel accurate. I turn my head back to get real projectory
I like contrasting seats in this tester vehicle. I like the CX-5. I ike the new camera footage.
go to sleep okayyyy? I'm liking the review so far c:
Love the Subaru bag in the trunk
Make a reveiw of an older car next like the Acura Legend you did do a CB7 Accord
I saw that several times the blinkers were not used. Don't tell me you are one of those drivers. :/ Other than that I really enjoy your videos. IS the 2016 Optima going to happen soon?
Which trim is he testing out?
I am looking to buy a used mini suv and I keep coming back to the mazda cx-5. Does anyone have any recommendations? or just stick with the Mazda? Thank You!
Really looking at the cx-5 gt as a top 3 option for a daily driver. I live with twisty hilly roads and lots of deer. a bit of snow in the winter and a big hill to my driveway. I'm stuck if I want this or a BMW x5 (used) or a Subaru wrx (2011 hatchback of course.) This is the most reasonable vehicle for me to get, I just hate paying brand new prices and loosing what is it, 15%? 30% of the value when you drive it off the lot... The 2016 has some nice touches that I appreciate over the previous models. Great review! Thanks!
+EJL2004 The 2016.5 just came out about a month ago. They made some of the features standard on the touring model that the Gt had. . Anything Mazda makes is usually beautiful in the twisty roads and hills. We got the touring model.
how much more is the ground clearance and riding height than the cx3?
Forget the cx 5 review...this guy is smokin hot!
+Lucky Ducky if you were a car would he have full access to you for a very very extensive review???
hi, you should test emergency braking, emergency obstacle avoidance to make a real raod test!
Good review. The new camera is awkward at times.
The intro music keeps playing even after you start talking, and I don't like the headmounted fisheye eyebrowcam either. You should switch back to what you used to do it was fine. Otherwise good review as usual and explains the differences from 2015 (seems not much). I appreciate your style of review - you notice the stuff that I do and I like that you actually look at features AND drive the car - as opposed to what the many other hamfisted reviewers do. Considering getting one of these or same year Rogue.
How is cabin noise compared to the competition?
whats the ETA on a Renegade review?
I think, it is better to just hold the camera when you're just showing the interior/exterior of the car. POV style is good when you driving.
You really need a "dead cat" added to your camera for those outside videos where the audio is overwhelmed by the wind noise.
2016 CX-5 GPS PROBLEM Does any body know when Mazda will resolve the real-time "traffic update" feature on its new (2016) NAVTEC GPS for the CX-5? The option doesn't work (it is gray), so alternate route(s) are not displayed when traffic delays, congestion, accidents, detours, road construction, etc. are encountered on a planned route. On the previous CX-5 models (2014; 2015), the TomTom feature was called "traffic alert" and it worked (most of the time).
however, why no parking sensor and trajectory even on GT model?
What's up with the Subaru bag in the the back?
