This was so helpful because I am a sucker for Collen, Christina Lauren, TJR… In one of Haley’s videos she talked about A book called “ Finlay Donvon is killing it” and helped me brunch out of my comfort zone and now I am currently reading the second book 💖

    - No exit by Taylor Adams
    - Dark matter by Blake crouch
    - the kind worth killing by Peter swanson
    - notes on execution
    -The one by John marrs

Ah yes one of my favourites is false witness by Karen Slaughter, I really enjoy her writing style and I NEVER see her on book tok or book tube. I love her and Kathy Reichs. Both some of my favourite thriller/mystery/horror(not paranormal horror) writers. If you haven't read Karen Slaughter you are missing OUT

@@wings2769 she has a whole series about temperance brennen, a forensic anthropathologist, the first book in that series is déja dead but you don't have to read the series in order at all as every book is a new storyline but just with the same main character. First one I read was The Bone Code and that was great! So i recommend that one :)

I hope one day you can get the chance to read The lunar Chronicles series. It is my absolute favorite even though it is sci-fi which I feel is a genre that is not so comfortable for me. There are four main books and each are based on fairytale retelling. Cinder, the first one is based on Cinderella, Scarlet on Red riding hood, Cress on Repunzal and Winter on Snow White. What I love about these books besides the character and the plot is the romance. Absolutely no spice, just cuteness all throughout and there are four main couples so you get to explore a lot. Also, the world building shoudn’t be too hard to understand since it is based in a futuristic era so while some things are different, it is still the same real world like ours. There are two more books, Fairest, which comes between Cress and Winter, and Stars Above which is a collection of short stories after Winter. You don’t necessarily have to read them. I hope you can try the seres out one day because it is absolutely phenomenal!!!!!

I am a Fantasy reader since I was a baby- Percy Jackson, Mortal Instruments and Harry Potter brought me into this world. And also my favorite book of all time is Alice in Wonderland. ✨🥺 I've been trying to experiment other genres like Thrillers (because i love love horror films and i think its the closest thing I could possibly read beyond fantasy). I also read Historical Fictions (since im a history geek snd practically a professional historian) But, I'm trying my hardest to get into the Romance genre, idk 😐 i appreciate a good romance book, like ive read 3 books from CoHo and ive experimented with other books as well. But, If I could choose a genre at the end of the day. It would still be fantasy, because of the complexity and world building- i like books that takes me out of the ordinary circumstances where i live in. You can say im more of a dreamer than a romantic gal. But, im trying my best to read more romance books in the future (thats not CoHo, i love her but i want to discover more books thats not from the same author). I also want to try non-fiction and other genres as well. 🥺 This video makes me want to pickup a book thats not fantasy 💁🏼‍♀️

It’s cool that you’re going out of your comfort zone with it! I have also been wanting to read more, and I have a list going for the summer!
It’s just cool how different a book can be depending on genre. I feel like I get what you mean with fantasy, a lot of them are longer series so they have a more delayed satisfaction. Also I really enjoy the digestibility of some short stories, I took a college literature course just on that, a lot have so much deep meaning packed into a smaller format. Sometimes it can be a lot to unpack and you need to sit on it longer to dissect the metaphors, but I agree that they are more of a one at a time read.
I’ve read lots of different things including non-fiction self help style, some of the others that I mentioned and more. One genre that was sort of outside my comfort zone that I felt like I just didn’t “get it” was poetry. But after picking up a couple of books in verse and with poets that I liked I found it really enjoyable and impactful!
I know this is a long comment… haha 😅 but this video sparked a lot of thoughts for me! Thanks for the inspo! If you’ve or anyone else has read until this point, let me know if you’d want any recommendations 🤍

It’s so darn good! And also agree with you, when you start a new genre you think the first ones are good when the community is like “it was meh” “predictable” lol 🤷🏻‍♀️ But that is the beauty of reading, it’s the same book with the same characters and storyline however hundreds of people interpret it their own way.

I’m super late on watching this video (just found your channel), but I wanted to say that I started really branching out and reading books I never would have read before around 2014, and it was the best thing I ever did!! I’ve discovered so many new and amazing authors and books I’d never have encountered if I didn’t do that. I love seeing people branch out in their reading!!

For the memoir genre you should read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls! I loved that book, it’s what got me into reading more memoirs!

if you need book recommendations- whiskey when we're dry is AMAZING (i think its historical fiction) and angle of repose (also pretty sure it was historical fiction) both books are my all time favorites

I really enjoy your videos and it’s so interesting to see what your thoughts on new genres are. For the fantasy books, the unseelie court and leylines are actually from Irish and British folklore and legends, so a lot of authors use them.

You should totally make another video like this, I know you said historical fiction is most out of your comfort zone, but it would be awesome to see you read some. Alan Gratz makes amazing Y/A books so they’re easy to understand and super interesting.

I love this video! You were bang on about knowing the tropes of your favorite genres. I read a ton of thrillers and so I'm at the point of thinking everything is predictable. Getting to see you pick up thrillers for the first time was really fun. I'm glad you're enjoying the genre. If you need an easy, bingable sci-fi to pick up I'd recommend Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. It's a bit of a thriller so it's easy to devour.

You should read the remnant chronicles!! It’s in the fantasy genre and I’m surprised I haven’t heard about more people talking about it! It was my first book in that genre so it has a special place in my heart but I promise it just keeps getting better with each book! It also has great world building and the pov changes around!

Haley I did this exact thing in June except I had never read romance. In June I started with a rec from you (The Summer of Broken Rules) and loved it so much I only read romances in June. Picking a new theme/genre to try is amazing 10/10 recommend.

One of my favorite book series ever is The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer! The first book is called “Cinder.” I would Highly recommend reading it because it is a pretty clean book series and I think it would be a bit out of your comfort zone but still with romance. I think the series is a mix of Syfy, dystopian, and fantasy. Each book introduces new characters to fall in love with, and the perspectives shifts throughout the books!

You have to read Amy Harmon's "The Bird and the Sword"! It's such a good mix of fantasy and romance (I'm not normally a fantasy person). The second book (the queen and the cure) is even better than the first, and I want to read it again lol!

If you wanna try historical fiction, I highly recommend The Giver of the Stars by Jojo Moyes. It’s about a traveling library in Kentucky in the early 1900’s I think, and it’s run by women. There’s a subplot of romance and it’s just so amazing to read about strong women wanting to educate people through books!!
