I will say, as someone who wears Kelly 32s as a daily bag in a relatively care-free way, I recently purchased a simple nylon shoulder bag and less expensive totes, and there is a very freeing when using something that isn't precious. So much mental energy is freed, and I didn't even think I was paying attention to it before. A similar thing happened when I started using my casio watch versus some of my nicer timepieces. There's a freedom in being able to do anything at any time, in any rough and tumble way that you want to, that's very liberating. You just get to live as you are, as it comes, and I have a deeper appreciation for that nowadays.

I have a lovely designer bag collection, but also some Coach bags, Kate Spade, Lou lou lemon etc. I just take an appropriate bag for the occasion. I think a collection with some high end and a few day to day types works best, for me at least. Great video. ❤️

I love how thoughtful you are about these topics! My theory is this: 1) live below your means, and 2) be ok with having the bag for the rest of your life (no resell). If these two conditions are met then I believe one can be carefree even with expensive designer bags. What do you think?

I felt the exact same way Jess about my bags especially the Herme's Chanel and LV bags I worked and save to get. I put that Kelly and Chanel classic flap in a bubble afraid to use them, 2017 I suffer a stroke ( 100% recovered all praise and glory to God) After that medical situation my outlook changed about everything, I told myself its just expensive or inexpensive materialistic stuff, Jess we only go around once in life smell the roses and blow out the candle babe, enjoy those pieces you have collect, get your cost per wear so if you decide to sell maybe you want feel such great financial lost.

I honestly just use my bags without worrying too much. I don’t really sell my bags and they cost so much, that to me, they are to be used. If my Birkin ends up on the floor, so be it! I don’t know I have 3 kids that I had to watch and take really good care of, I definitely don’t want to worry about an inanimate object! My joy is to use my bags and not to buy them. I don’t even really own cheap bags at this point, I always wear a designer one. I think I’m just in a phase where I want to enjoy!

My collection is mainly contemporary luxury (Coach/Kate Spade/MK/Marc Jacobs) with a few LVs mixed in as well. No matter the price, I will not be putting them on the floor or throwing them in the dirt haha. Recently I had to take a flight to a conference for work and I wanted to wear a mini The Tote Bag as my bag during the confence, but didn't have the heart to put under the seat of an airplane. Instead I packed it into my suitcase and took a mini Jansport backpack on the flight because it's easy to throw it in the wash. There is no problem with looking after your bags and wanting the best for them. Maybe just try to incorporate a few throw around pieces into your collection.

I’m not quite in the Olsen’s tax bracket so my attitude towards my bags depends on if I can afford to replace the bag like-for-like. If it’s a particularly pricey one or a limited edition then I’m way more guarded with it to the point where I will only use it if I know exactly how the day/evening will unfold. That’s why I love my Longchamps and lower priced Loewe pocket and basket bag. A Chanel classic flap would terrify me (even though I’d still love a tweed one). A resale price never enters my head.

It is so true. We do evolve and change but I think for the moment, we do have to enjoy what we work hard for. That said, I do take care of my bags where I can. On Mother’s Day, it was pouring rain after church and I was wearing a blazer. So I tucked my purse in and ran like if I was in a marathon. Ruined my flats because it was ponding. 🥿 ⛈️Either that or have a bucket of water since my bag is an open tote. 🪣 lol. Enjoy! 😉

I think thats the biggest factor in whether or not we baby our bags if there's conscience in the back of our mind saying that we might sell them in the future. I don't have the funds for a collection and Aus always gets the crappy end of the stick by being so expensive compared to other countries! I always have to thoroughly think about each piece I buy because it will be a bag I keep with the mindset of being a "ride it till it dies" without any intention of reselling. I'm happy with the few pieces I have so far because of my mum-life which means it needs to be very functional whether it be a small bag or else it needs to hold a lot. Maybe you can take that kind of approach with some of your bags instead of all of them because that would be impossible (since you have such a fun collection!), that might take the stress off babying all of your bags.

      @Jessiestyle  Před 20 dny +1

I was so tired of being afraid of getting super sweaty with my designer bags while we go hiking, to the gym, etc (our date days usually include the gym hahah) so it’s been soooo freeing to wear my baggu! But now I think I’m obsessed and I’m wanting to collect a lot of them lol luckily they’re relatively cheap (compared to designer) 😅

Jess, Everything you are saying here I have said to myself. Hermes is here to stay for me, but recently, I came across a Balenciaga XS Le Cagole denim bucket bag with crystals that I fell in love with & now use frequently. I don't have to "worry" about it as much, if at all, which I absolutely am loving. I put my Rose Mexico Rodeo on it which is probably sacrilegious, but love it anyway. As you said, when you were younger, you had bags that were just fun & carefree, so I think it is perfect to have a few bags that aren't as high maintenance to enjoy as well, like your SPY bag, so cool!!! I also loved one of your lastest videos about denim bags possibly having a resurgence, it made my feel good about my recent denim Balenciaga Le Cagole!!!

I care for my bags regardless of their value. It irks to hold a ‘flawed’ bag. Deep hardware scratches/oxidations or certain dents or markings on the leather really frustrates me. I carry portable shopping bags in most of my handbags to protect them from rain. And I do not place my handbags on the floor since they would be on my body later. That said, I cannot understand the trend of overly protecting the bags as this really removes the joy of carrying nice bags. Agree that one needs a right number of bags to enjoy each bag and its purpose fully 😊.

Preloved bags from other brands are good for this as they’re usually cheaper and often already have a bit of wear on them already. I do still baby them (even the contemporary ones) as Im just that way inclined but not as much as it I’d brought them new. Preloved, fendi, prada & dior are great for these reasons even if you end up selling them the loss wont ever be too much

I stopped buying bags because I literally have no space in my closet for more, and I learned to appreciate that, enjoy the ones I have. Even when I had cheap bags I never put them on the floor, I have a superstition that putting bags on the floor is bad luck so I never did, now I have a hook with me everywhere I go in case I'll need to hang the bag.
I like using my designer bags, but I also have mid range brands like Senrev. If it's a rainy day and I don't want to use my other bags, I use my Senrev.
I'm also going to look for a new job this summer and I don't want to take my bags to the new workplace intil I'll know what's the vibe is towards designer bags. I am saving for a Kelly, and I'm looking to buy a DeMillier bag for work, but for now, that's it, I just don't think I need another designer bag at this point in my life.
I think it's important to have 1 or 2 none designer bags just in case you'll need them.
We work hard and save for these bags and we need to use them and enjoy them, I'm noy saying trash them completely but use them and love them, I don't think about the resale value, I buy them because I love them and they bring me joy to carry them

  • @camiq1245

IMO The reason when we worry about a luxury item we own it comes down to 1 core thing. If we lose it / damage it -the item is hard or impossible to replace. That means to own the item was likely a large investment financially and you do not want that investment to go to waste.
Even if the item was made of nylon, if it costs thousands there is still a lack of carefree abandon. It just means its less likely to be damaged with use.
I think the question becomes - when something is so expensive that you cant afford to replace it without major saving/effort, how do you enjoy the item appropriately for you without risking major damage or loss…. My 2 cents
