- One of the craziest finishes you will see. A big thunderstorm hits Darlington and cars slip slide away.
Involved:
Ernie Irvan
Jerry Nadeau
Kenny Irwin Jr.
Ricky Craven
Jeff Gordon -- finished 4th
Jeff Burton -- won
Yes, Jeff Burton won with his whole right side torn up, Jeff Gordon finishes 4th with a caved-in right front. It would be the 2nd win of the season for Jeff Burton.
Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons, and Ned Jarrett of the good ESPN with the call.
And on Mothers Day, when the winner's interview is shown, I will show what shall be the introduction for my videos, so vote vote vote, just one more day!

When Burton got out the car and threw his hands up a huge lighting strike happened at the same time..one of the coolest moments in NASCAR!!!
Man i miss BP, him and Bob Jenkins were the best NASCAR Commentators in my opinion
There was a number of years where Jeff Burton was the KING of weather-affected races. If it got pushed to Monday, he ended up winning it. If it got shortened just after halfway, he was in front when it was called.
Jeff Burton should've went out and played the lottery after this. This was my first NASCAR race I got to attend. I will never forget it.
I’ve always liked that Exide paint scheme, looks slick
My fav car back then. Loved burton when he was in it. But to me this was best generation of cars. They look like stock cars but still slick and beefy to know it was a powerful machine.
Kurt Busch drove a truck with that scheme that next year in 2000.
Especially the 2000 car! My all time favorite paint scheme!
@@landoflogic107 Almost killed bodine in that truck.
Unfortunately Brian France would rather chase the money rather than respect the history and tradition.
And even now it's only one race a year :/ the 500, this was in the 400
Thank goodness they finally realized the Southern 500 belongs at Darlington on Labor Day weekend and gave it back the spring weekend as well.
I remember this quite well and damn I miss what nascar use to be
Carl Edwards' team still uses the pit board from this era. It's the purple-ish pink Exide colors.
I think the coolest ending I saw was Bobby Labonte winning when it started to torrential downpour on the last lap, you could barely even see the cars.
Forget what track/year but I'd say it was around 1999-2002
Crazy finish
I don't remember seeing this race
But I remember Burton getting outta the car and celebrating
That was something, man. No doubt!!!!
Now this is the great coverage ESPN was made of!
N with the report bill weber had....thats the reason why he is so good in the pits!
Also GREAT CLASSIC DARLINGTON!
I was at this race. We left because we knew the rain was coming. As we got back in tge highway, we looked back at the track, and couldn't see it due to the rain....
Betcha if someone bigger like Earnhardt or Stewart or Gordon won, more people would remember this. Bizarre finish indeed.
First race I ever went to was Texas in 1997 and Burton won it, his first win.
Way to go, Jeff Burton!
Woooooooooool, Daddy!!!!!
Kenny Irwin was involved in this wreck. He died a year later when he crashed at New Hampshire Speedway.
Because of Irwin's fatal wreck, NASCAR had the drivers use restrictor plates at New Hampshire for the September, 2000 race. Jeff Burton won that race, too. In fact, he led every single lap.
One thing I, as well as everyone else, hates, is when someone is killed outright, or eventually dies, from one of these horrid accidents! We've lost so many NASCAR Drivers thataway. Look at some of the most horrifying crashes in NASCAR History. Look back to 1968, when Don McTavish was killed in that particular wreck. The front end of his Race Car had already been torn off.
Then, as he sat there motionless, a Car, coming through a thick bank of Smoke, accidentally struck the part of the car, right where Mr. McTavish was sitting. That second impact literally amputated his legs from the rest of his body!
Then, in 1995, Russell Phillips was killed outright, in a very violent crash, that saw him end up almost completely de-limbed...and decapitated!
So many others have died horribly...even Mr. Dale Earnhardt. His crash really didn't look to be that graphic...but he wasn't wearing a HANS Device...and ended up with his brains literally being scrambled, inside of his Skull!
So many NASCAR Drivers have died...but they died doing what they loved to do. They were True Men! They knew that, so to speak, they were dancing with Death...but they wouldn't back down!
I give them all the credit in the World!
“...what a sport, heha...”
HELL YEAH GO BURTON!
i remember this race well. the was a cool ending
this is one of the few races that I did not get to watch that year
The voice of Bill Webber makes me wanna watch IndyCars.
yes, its actually for a purpose so he can see to get into his pit stall because of the colors.
i remember this it was nuts and so many lapped cars jeremy finished 2nd but like 6th or 7th in line
And when Kyle Busch blew a tire on the last lap at Fontana in Xfinity, there wasn't any caution for his blown tire that had its pieces everywhere and it could endanger other cars behind Kyle... I don't think NASCAR rules say you can't be a winner of the race, if you (unintentionally) caused a caution, but eventually crossed the finish line first and was able to keep the minimum speed under yellow (which is possible with the blown tire like Burton showed).
And the biggest BS I've ever seen - to throw a caution to the same driver with the same problem on the same track in the Cup Series while running 2nd, but not in the Xfinity while leading. WTF?
Because he's a disgrace to NASCAR
It was explained after the fall 2009 Talladega races that each series has different staff in the reff'ing booth, hence why the truck race finish was determined differently from the cup race.
The first race you described was the xfinity or whatever they call it now, then a cup race. That's not even factoring in for brian france. But if he was hardly at the cup races, would he have been at the trucks or Busch series races at all?
Nascar Racing 3
GOD I miss bob Jenkins I didn't watch this race for some reason(why I can't remember)
slayerdearly they need to bring him back for the darlington throwback race
He meant most of the other stuff during speedweeks like practice sessions and the Gatorade Duels. The Daytona 500 is still on FOX.
@gadgefan48 that Bruton character also had a lot to do with it
First race I ever went to was at Martensville in 97'. The race was post ponned till Monday because of rain, Jeff Burton won
I agree... his booth performances were pretty good last year, I thought. He, Kyle, and Wally make a good team, and hopefully it'll be a nice change of pace when TNT takes over. NO MORE DIGGER!
gordon finshed 3rd
i had this on a tape xD it was funny
BJ,BP and NJ sound really confused too lol
And they never used them again. That was a horrifically bad race.
where was dale sr
the Daytona 500 on speed? no way...
@RedSoxNation92 Wrong Jeff you're referring to, as Gordon got all the bad-luck cheers. If anything, I think they're cheering Burton for winning the race with a car as torn up as that,.
frankie stoddard was a genius
in the beginning are the fans cheering because burton blew a tire?
No, the fans are cheering because Jeff Gordon was involved in the wreck. Jeff Gordon was an extremely hated driver by the traditional NASCAR fans for the first 10 years or so of his career. Whenever he wrecked, fans would cheer.

Dale Earnhardt hated using restrictor plates at that New Hampshire race. Dale Sr. was never a big fan of restrictor plate racing at all.
It's very unfortunate that Earnhardt died the folowing February at Daytona after hitting the wall at 190+ MPH.
ahhh damn.....yea you caught me lol i didnt even see that. well i gues i am a dum dum
Crashed earlier in the race, wasn't a factor
Well, the reason why restrictor plates were used at New Hampshire ONCE was because of the speeds both Irwin and Petty hit the wall at. Both men also had stuck throttles and their brakes did not work. Earnhardt's crash was a result of overcorrecting his machine after being knocked loose going into turn three.
But why they simply not play on the carburetor? Some spacer exist that could slow down the car, and Nascar know that since they use it in Craftman... And the size of a carburator could play...
And, whatever, stuck throttles should never happen at this level, if it's happen something is wrongly made in the car or I underestimate some pressure somewhere, use a kill swicht is a good idea but a hole restrictor plate is... Restricting.
1999 dum dum...the video says it
easy killer, just wondering
