I had the incredible honour of meeting Ray back in ‘92 and getting to know him a little across 48 hours. He and his wife wandered into the independent record shop I ran and we began chatting. I had no idea who he was. He mentioned he was playing a gig later that night and would I like to come and hear him play? I asked which venue he was playing at, expecting a pub or small club - he said it was the NEC, Birmingham with Paul Simon! My jaw dropped 😂. I obviously went (with a mate who also loved Paul Simon’s music) and after the gig we met Steve Gadd, Michael Brecker, Richard Tee and Paul Simon. Ray wasn’t around (I think he preferred to be private), but the next day I took a cassette for Richard Tee to the hotel they were all staying at and Ray was there. I can recall what he said to me like it was yesterday - “I will never forget you.” Sadly, that was the last time I saw Ray, but meeting him and discovering his own music (he gave me a Stimela album which I treasure) was a magical experience and I thank you, Ray, with all of my heart. ❤

Zuluboys... This music... This music! Jerrrrr man. It brings the tears, not tears of sorrow, no, not at all. Tears that are brought about by the way this music was blended, the voices that accompany the sound of the drum and bass... LONG LIVE NANA COYOTE..... Thanks Zuluboys.

I'm dreaming of Stimela playing at Market Theatre again and asking the same question to the same people about the same song, "Please come and give us your blueprint for a new South Africa." Those extra 20 minutes or so were a fantastic example of live music serving the interests of participatory democracy.
