I love this theory. Personally, I'd always thought that Oswin's conversion was a dalek so insane that it adopted the personality of Oswin, and through accessing the Alaska's records began to make it's hallucinations gradually more real, but I think yours is better.

Cybermen are arguably trying to help you. Therefore, an asylum is made to save the cybermen who have gone insane, but the Cybermen and want to help. They would want to help. They want us to be them because they think they are helping us.

If it was a cyberman asylum I think it would be cool if they were old cyber tombs with cybermen from all different eras tho i still think the idea of it being a dalek one is cool (probably because it’s a really cool setting and I love how atmospheric it is with the old broken casings

An Asylum of the Cybermen would also work as an archive of sorts, allowing the cybermen to access pristine copies of previous iterations, in order to study the strengths and weaknesses of each, and granting them the ability to revert to earlier versions if a new method of destroying the current generation was discovered. There are so many ideas!

Daleks see you as the disease and must be eliminated to not be infected themselves. Cybermen see you as a diseased patient and need to be "cured"

I like the idea that the asylum would thus be a "medical ship/hopsital" and thus the idea that people are absolutely terrified of cyberman hospitals. Could make for a good sting.

As an alternative origin to this hypothetical Dalek: Perhaps it was a Dalek Scientist that was involved in experimenting with turning other species into Daleks (perhaps as the Dalek Scientist behind the plan seen in Dalek Empire 3) and began to view purity of hatred as more important to Dalek existence, which was what made the Daleks imprison it within the Asylum.

The Daleks that Oswin "hears" is the Dalek conditioning trying to break her human mind still, to take it over, to Dalek-fy her. That door we see in the episode is sort of like a door to Oswin's human mind. Once the Daleks gets in, that's it, the last remnant of her human self is lost to the conditioning.

Is a Nightmare Child video planned? I would love to hear your thoughts on that legendry Dalek, even if much of it is speculation. I also think an explenation for 'the Asylum of the Cybermen' could be that they are linking up all the insane cybermen into a giant Cyberplanner - a wild card for when they need more ‘creative’ strategies.

I really like this concept of an evil and insane Dalek scientist that turns people into Daleks due to it's hatred and jealousy. (I haven't read any official source books/comics/Big Finish) Usually when we see a Dalek with emotions they either become good (Humanised Daleks), focus their hatred on their fellow daleks (Rusty), or just go insane/suicidal (I can only think of the Dalek from Dalek). We've seen how emotions could have turned Dalek Sec good (human emotions but still emotions) and how the Doctor argues how important emotions are, but this 'Asylum Scientist Dalek' could be a twisted reflection of it. Emotions can be a good thing, but sometimes they can make us do some really horrible things.
I really like the design you used for the Dalek. A Dalek with a ruined casing roaming dark, dimly lit corridors with it's 'eye' off creeps me out.

This was a damn well made chilling video. Happy Halloween Dalek Bumps! Ya know, a part of me likes to wonder if a Cyberman Asylum could be something a split faction would create for themselves. I read an idea elsewhere in another comment lost to time about the Cyberman potentially having a civil war. A war between Cybermen still intent on converting Humanity, and the new faction realizing the error of their ways and wishing to preserve mankind. So, they create a facility to "Rehabilitate" already converted Cybermen to their cause to aid in the war effort to defend humanity. And who knows? The Daleks could take advantage of this civil war amidst the infighting amongst other races on several galactic fronts. Just some ideas!

An absolutely amazing and detailed theory without reaching unreasonably far in any direction. However, I do believe you have put more thought into the lore of Rusty and the asylum than any writers for Doctor Who ever did (At the time, at least). Sometimes I imagine how good Dalek stories could potentially get if they had the right budget and minds behind it, but that can also be said for anything.

In addition to ZigZag-mw9ir’s comment, the Cybermen have an obsession with survival. In that light, an asylum for irreversibly malfunctioning Cybermen would actually make *more* sense than the idea of destroying any Cybermen that go wrong. Better to make sure that they survive than to contribute to the extinction of your own race.
(Side note: as a Cyberman fan, your videos make me want to create a channel that’s just as entertaining and informative as yours, but with a focus on Cyberman lore.)

    1:30 A few reasons.
    1) This depends on the era and type of cybermen, but some Cybermen believe they are saving humanity. They think conversion is right. That twisted rightousness could easily be extended into being unwilling to kill a Cyberman. At least, it makes more sense than Daleks being unwilling, considering how rare it is to actually get a Dalek story that doesn't somehow involve a Dalek killing a Dalek.
    2) The Asylum wouldn't have to just be an Asylum, but a conversion planet (like we see in Power of the Doctor) and the Asylum is only one section of it.
    3) Humans are a limited resource, unlike Daleks which can seemingly be grown from next to nothing. We see late in the Cyber Wars that Ashad, presumably the current Cyber Leader or at least the leader of his own faction, simply has no Cybermen left, and has to find an abandoned warship to bolster his troops. He specifically mentions how few humans there are in that time period, and that he wants to create robotic Cybermen so he can continue his conquest. This is all to say that they wouldn't just waste Cybermen (i.e. humans) so readily in some eras.
Also, I think the twist would have been equally as predictable, given Asylum of the Daleks already has a bunch of converted Daleks anyway.

  • @cameronmonaghan6883

    Imagine the reverse.
A character (or characters) who try to rewrite a Dalek's psyche to make it more human. But unlike Alpha, Sec or Metaltron there's no gradual mutation or clean process so the operation is rushed and the reveal of so many human emotions at once cause the Dalek unlimited pain.

I love this theory, and there are even a few thing to back it up with the fact that the God-Emperor Dalek was so insane, it converted humans into Daleks from just 1 cell, perceiving itself to have purified the human race.
Unrelated note, but the way you described Oswin's conversion into a Dalek as being "diced up on an operating table and stuffed into a Dalek casing" just adds some much more terror to the idea.
The idea that she wasn't just genetically modified, she is still a human to her core, but her body was basically chopped up until she was a barely functioning blob of a human nervous system slammed shut into a Dalek casing.

As a support for this theory, during the Time War, the Daleks created Berzerker class units. These units were made from the populations of ships and planets they encounter, deleting (somewhat unsuccessfully) their memories.
this created insane, mutilated monsters that just felt hate and would often kill anything they saw, including Daleks.

Horrifyingly enough, there was the "Glass Dalek" from the classic series, where one of the character's actually got reduced into a Dalek mutant, and kept giving the order to exterminate them because they were in pain but also conflicted that they were impure. You could still see part of a human face on the mutant which is pretty unsettling in concept. So weirdly, Oswin was not the first butchered human turned into a Dalek for some twisted purpose. So taking your theory into account a terrifying idea is that this butcher *isn't* an inmate in the asylum, but one of the science division Daleks, and Oswin is one of the "failed experiments" to explore Dalek nature as they have done on multiple occasions.

I can just imagine rusty having been slowly floating from planet to planet in search of daleks to kill, constantly mumbling spiteful things to itself. Some daleks probably spotted it as it was approaching the daleks asylum and just saw this erratic dalek screaming profanities as it descends on the asylum planet. And they just watch, eye stalks slowly panning and decide rightly to not get involved

I find thhe argument that the Daleks' rage against organics because the organics can do thing like feel the sun, breath air etc while the daleks are trapped in their shells to be unlikely, as we've seen daleks literally leaving their shell and wandering around. Breathing air, taking in the sights, taking over humans etc.
However, this theory would make more sense if each individual Dalek had some sort of faint racial memory of being a _Kaled;_ of having walked on two legs, experience of reading a book, of love , etc. Having some residual memory of this, however faint, would truly be horrific for a creature born, and to ultimately die in, a metal shell.

@@fawziekefli2273 The novelisation of 'Dalek' explains the process of Dalek birth, in that the first few seconds of their lives are blissful, as they are implanted with Humanoid memories and language, before the memories are ripped away and replaced with hateful thoughts

As interesting as it was to see Dalek psyche on display, the idea that the Daleks would keep "defective" Daleks around instead of exterminating them never made sense to me. A Cyberman asylum would have made more sense, especially a Mondasian one.
I also find the idea of a Dalek parliament a bit baffling considering their track record. Since when did these wheelie bin Nazis decide to give democracy a whirl?
Still, the scene with the catatonic Daleks was heartbreaking as was the scene with Oswin.
