  • Potter (Starring Arthur Lowe) - Series 2 - Episode 7.
    Broadcast: April 9th, 1980.
For many a long year, Redvers Potter has been head of the family firm - Pottermints (the hotter mints!). A man used to being obeyed, he is authoritative and decisive. At 58, he has decided to sell the business. Mrs Potter, who has had the dubious honour of holding her position for some thirty years, has taken to vodka at the prospect of having her husband at home all day. She has long dreaded his retirement and is learning to cope with the extra time he now has to ignore her - or alternatively to advise her how to do things he should be doing himself.
Not unnaturally, with time now on his hands, he tends to interfere with other people's lives: "I'll help people. That's what I'll do. They are usually simple creatures; bloody idiots most of them," or rather, as his neighbours see it, "probe his nose into other people's business!" Potter's enthusiasm for 'helping others' though is equalled only by his ineptitude in so doing!
The brilliant Arthur Lowe (Dad’s Army) creates the perfect, pompous portrayal of Redvers Potter in this classic BBC comedy series from the prolific pen of Roy Clarke. Noel Dyson (Father, Dear Father) is his long-suffering wife, with comedy favourite John Barron (Yes Minister) as the vicar - his friend and drinking companion who shares a similar philosophy to Potter's. John Warner is "Tolly" Tolliver, Potter’s easily influenced and long suffering next-door neighbour.
    SERIES 2 - EPISODE 7
Potter has decided to try a new role as a tourist guide for foreigners - but his approach is more likely to lead to a declaration of war.

    Arthur Lowe - Redvers Potter
    Noel Dyson - Aileen Potter
    John Barron - The Vicar
    John Warner - 'Tolly' Tolliver
    Honor Shepherd - Diana Tolliver
    Brenda Cowling - Jane

Ha ha ha..the Pearl Harbour joke. Damn near killed me. Thanks for uploading both series. I've thoroughly enjoyed this lost (to me) series. The great Arthur Lowe, a comedy genius. This was the best episode of the two series. The chemistry between Arhtur Lowe and John Barron is brilliant

Arthur Lowe died on my 12th birthday - 15 April 1982. I remember seeing him interviewed on Pebble Mill at One the day before and both my mum and I thought he looked ill then.

This episode of Potter is poignant, because it marks the final appearance of Arthur Lowe in the title role.

@@paulgrayson3833 It was called "A. J. Wentworth, BA" and was broadcast on ITV three months after Lowe had died. Produced and directed by ex BBC Head of Comedy Michael Mills, it is a largely forgotten series. I have watched it and find it sadly rather dull and unfunny.

I'm American and just turned 40 and my wife doesn't like my " old people shows," she says and she has no interest in them..I found this showed bored looking for something interesting to watch. After the first episode I thought what a funny show and I binged watched the whole thing and lost interest after they replaced Arthur lowe with bailey- he's no potter- funny but not Arthur lowe funny...I love British comedy so many good old shows...
