Ive fitted hundreds of downlights and just used a piece of metal coathanger bent at 90 degrres for two and a half inches, figure out where I want my lights then drill a small pilot hole. shove the short end up the hole and spin it, if it hits a joist just move them accordingly
Nice idea, I always use a very thin terminal I poke up (gingerly) around a template of the light, it is a pain in the tits filling the little holes though when it’s in a joist. Gonna give this coat hanger trick a go next time! Tried it with twin an earth once but it’s too flappy. These stud finders do look a lot better now though than the nineties versions! Which put me off them for life.

👌 I use a bit of 2.5 bent and cut to half the hole size. Works a treat.

Some good tips but amazed still measuring 600mm location but a two inch beam and four inch hole. I thought it was only us oldies that had to be hybrid 😀.Have a great christmas lads.

I’ve occasionally just eyed my laser level up until it looks right with the room in these scenarios and it looks perfect

Love your vids nick budd, I bought one of them cheap stud finders over the bosch one in the end and I must say it hasn't let me down this far, I couldn't justify spending the money on the bosch one. Keep up the good work mate learn a lot from your vids, and my best mate who's a sparky. Keep up the good work boys.

We cut a 4” section of ceiling out and drill a route of holes through the centre of the joists, plasterer then puts plasterboard back there and feathers it back in .
Even cheaper version of a stud finder. Buy a strong earth magnet and move it around the wall or ceiling until it finds a screw thus finding your joist 👍🏻

I did similar in a kitchen last month, six led down lights, cut the holes, fished the cables through, only had to make two cuts across joists, which made good after.Another electrician who was asked to quote said it could not be done from underneath, the bathroom above was a tiled floor, he claimed that would all have to come up, he never even submitted a price.The client very pleased with my work and did a very generous recomendation of my work on the community website.

Nice job lads, although I avoid putting those 4 inch cutters up in the ceiling now, preferring a blunt multi tool bit or plain pad saw, yes it’s a bit dustier, but those hole saws will go straight through a plastic pipe laying on the ceiling or cable… learnt that the hard way! And also if you cut a trap under the joist that extends either side of it, a kind of long oblong shape, you can see clearly either side of the joist, incase there’s a sneaky data cable or alike clipped to the other side of it when you’re drilling through, that the phone camera doesn’t pick up… also learnt the hard way!
Put the hole saw in reverse and it will not damage the cable. Not sure about pipe. But usually pipe isn’t layed right into of the ceiling.
@@mrseanpride6449 if it’ll cut through plasterboard, it’ll cut through twin and earth sheathing. Pipes shouldn’t lay on ceilings, or be touching the chipboard, or running down walls that don’t even have a radiator on them, but you haven’t worked in many new builds if you’ve never seen this. I’ve seen it multiple times, and gone through them, or my lads have. ‘Shouldn’t’ isn’t a risk you want to take in the world of DIYer’s, kitchen/bathroom fitters and new build monkeys.
@@CoulterTravel that’s not true. Run your finger across the hole saw in the cutting direction and then run your finger across the opposite way. If the hole saw is in reverse you are much less likely to damage and cable or anything above that you can’t see.
@@mrseanpride6449 if it works for you, then fine. I’m just saying I’ve had issues so I don’t take the risk. But even a multi tool isn’t risk free is if, sometimes you just get unlucky.

I get what you mean with the 'eye sweet' idea, but I personally always make sure my work is done square and correctly. I don't lessen my quality of work so that it fits in with someone else's less than perfect work. Each to their own. :)

@@samwilson7043 Enjoy putting squint sockets on the wall because the joiners didn’t cut the skirting properly. Weapon.
Don't make pencil marks if it's not where you are cutting... use a strip of painters tape. I also don't try and measure up in a ceiling with a tape... I use a piece of stiff wire then measure with a tape.
Can you explain the stiff wire thing please?
@@mrseanpride6449 I take a piece of wire .. like a coat hanger, put a 90 bend in it... it lies flat on the drywall... place your finger at the edge of the hole... then measure the wire to your fingertip. Or you can just use the wire below the hole to make a pencil mark on the drywall... It's too tough to try and use a tape like that up in a hole.

Honest question mate do you think that the £17.00 stud finder that you did a review on the other day will pick up the studs?
In this case yes it probably would, or save £17 and just get a strong magnet and run it over the ceiling or wall until you find the screws and then mark them out and that gives you the stud location
@@dplatts14 I have tried it with a magnaclean magnet and them bad boys are powerful. The magnet however wasn’t as good with the plasterboard in front of it Thanks for the tip and answer
