Amy, I think you're being too hard on yourself. No one would look at one stone on the wall behind you and think, "It's not as good as the first one". When there are multiples of something, people view it as a whole and marvel at the entirety. The Amish quilters in America, so it is said, purposely sewed in a "mistake" so it would be obvious it was not mass-produced. I say you should embrace the imperfections and call it a job well done. It will be beautiful!

Amy, you have NOTHING to be disappointed about!! You challenged yourself to do something that you'd never done before, researching and asking 'experts' for advice. You have done an AMAZING job, and the tiles are such a lovely work of art, individually, and as an installed 'whole.' I am proud of you, and all that you are accomplishing!!! 🥰 We love you and Marc, for sharing your journey!!!

When you are putting the clay “square” into the plaster mold, rather than hit the clay to drive it down, use a small block and hit the block. That way, you can be a bit more aggressive and not be as concerned about damaging the mold.

Amy you’re your own worst critic when it comes to seeing products that you are creating from scratch. You see the imperfections. The tiles look magnificent. When criticizing your own work, it’s easy to do and you work so closely with the end product. Don’t be so hard on yourself. They are going to look beautiful when completed. Thank you for all your hard work.

I so admire your persisitance, and while I don't think you picked the best method, you have made it work. The imperfections are what make a hand-made product look great. By the time they are glazed, fired and put on the wall any observer is not going to know which one came first, which last.
Great work, I look forward to seeing how it all comes out. One hundred years from now the will still look good.

Amy try using a thin wire to cut the excess clay off the back of the tile. Connecting wooden handles to either end of the wire will help you get a hand hold on the wire. Just scrape it levelly across the tile. Also working the tile some before you wedge it in the tile will soften the clay up and be easier to cut. Hope this helps.

Hi Amy not sure if anyone has told you, but if you put cornflour in the mould before the clay it helps it to be removed easily. Also maybe use a spatula to press the clay in? I use these techniques all the time with my pottery, I hope it helps...fantastic work on ALL the work you are doing. Watching from Australia.

Amy, I use a rolling pin that is wider than the tile to be able to apply even pressure on the clay to fill the recesses in the mold. I use a slab of clay slightly thicker that the final tile to fill the mold. I do put a square of cotton fabric over the clay before rolling it out. I scrape the excess clay off using a 4"x1/4" piece of wood cut longer than the tile's width. I start in the middle of the tile pulling lightly toward the tiles outer edges. It takes several passes but gives a flat back and even thickness to the tile. Hope this helps you.

  • @MaryEllen_of_OBX
    @MaryEllen_of_OBX Před 11 měsíci +1

    Here's an idea
Find or buy a piece of metal about a cm, or a little less, thick. Wood may work too. Cut it to slightly smaller than the square of the tile area of the mold. Put the same soapy mix on to help it release from the clay. Lay it on the clay. Pound on the square "plate" shall we call it, starting at the middle and working your way outward. Next, I would scrape away the excess clay that spills out of the gap between the square plate and the edge of the mold. Then pry up the plate and dry as usual. Though you may want to let the plate stay until the tile is dry. Your call.
I also wonder if it wouldn't be better to have the mold bigger than the tile you want to make. In other words, have more blank area around the edges of your clay when you pop it out. This would mean you wouldn't have to get so close to the edge to get the full pattern. Once you popped the tile out you could then cut it to size.
    Hope something I said helps!

Amy, I watched your vlog when making the tiles. You are so talented…! Accept that being an artist is not the ability of duplicating what you are creating in exactly the same manner…that each tile has its differences is what makes it unique and beautiful.👏👏🌟
As a young artist I tried to manipulate what I thought my creations should be … without understanding that I needed to give my brain a rest and let my imagination take over!
A wonderful woman , Miss Pearson, who was my Art Teacher at Central Junior High School Summer School for only 6 weeks, helped me embrace my creative process. Because of her kindness, and her ability to make me see what she was seeing and to encourage me, she gave me the confidence to believe I could create something unique and special. I wish I had thanked her. ( I was only 14)…now I am 76. It took a while, life for and with my family was extremely difficult. Yet, through the years I would hear her kind encouraging words resonate, and with the kindness of a handful of gentle creatives women…I began to believe in myself…not be so critical of my work, and to let the creative force within me express itself!
Amy, you are an Artist! …an Artisan! …a creator!
You are blessed to have Marc by your side , as he is to have you support him…your mum, dad, and others who have been there for you. You are a Blessing as you are also Blessed. Clement 🩵and Juliette 🩷are a magical addition to your life. They too are blessed to have such creative minds to share and let them explore their creativity! 🎉
As I continue in my journey I look forward to following all you are sharing with us… your friend. (I am taking the liberty of calling myself this special term), please forgive my being presumptuous.
In the next few days I will be returning to my birthplace, Perú. It will be a moment I have been dreaming of doing for several years. Three flights onward I shall arrive to be taken to live the rest of life surrounded by “my family of choice,” loving kind individuals who I have chosen to be my forever family…best yet they have welcomed me❤! Lovingly, Ana María

I think your tile will be fine. The glaze will cover a myriad of inconsistencies. Since the first was the best one, your mold may be getting too coated with your release agent. Plaster of Paris doesn’t hold clear lines for long either when it gets damp. I think this last tile will be fine though.

Sorry, haven't checked all the comments, and no expert, but I would try by making the tiles thicker but smaller by a few mm, so that when you pound it in, it spreads in the mould. To remove the excess thickness, use a long wire that you hold across and scrape along the tile, using downwards pressure. 😁

I know you have finished your tiles and they look great but, yes but, you might want to do a test using some clay slip. You just soak some clay in water for a day or more then run it through a sieve to give you a lovely liquid clay. Pour a thin layer into your mould and let it get a bit stiff , not too much, before you add your slab of clay. The slip takes on all the fine details.
Make yourself or get someone to make you a metal frame with a handle, like a cookie cutter that is the exact size of the tile you want. This will save you time with cleaning up the edges.
Potters plaster is better and stronger depending on the ratio of plaster to water that you use but bear in mind the stronger you make the plaster the longer the clay will take to come out of the mould.
Love watching you and the family. The coach house is my dream home.
