Not true! If you been living in the same place for over 20 years, your rent is still reasonable. Many people live in the city making less than 60k, even 50k. They have been for 20-30 or more years. These numbers are for those new and starting here, but what if you been here 10,20,30,40 or more years?

If you own a house free and clear and don’t have kids, it’s possible to live comfortably on $50K a year in San Jose. Food doesn’t cost that much.
If you’ve just bought a house with a mortgage and have at least one kid, then you’d need around $250-300K a year to be comfortable as 60% of your after tax income goes to cover the monthly payments and day care.
The $124K average for San Jose is rather meaningless.
