- Today we are talking about a 0€-Sound-Upgrade for all Golf 7 R, S3 (and RS3?) owners, walking you through the steps of deactivating the boxes that control the active exhaust system. As mentioned, in real-life the difference is a lot more noticeable than in this video but maybe you still get an idea if its worth doing on your personal car. If your driving habit is usually around town and shorter distances I would definitely advise you to drive with the boxes de-plugged, if you are running on long Autobahn trips it might get too annoying to have to have the flaps open all the time. Danke for posting the video and showing other S3 owners this "trick".I did it today on my US Spec S3 sedan.
It did make a difference & sounds much better now. I thought your video was informative and I clearly knew what to do before attempting it. There are 2 of them on both L&R sides. I unplugged both L&R sides.
It took app 5 minutes or less, including backing the S3 up on ramps to reach and see better as well as "zip tie-ing" the wire up and out of way which I did after quik ride around block.
I found it hard to use 1 hand to disconnect the plugs, I did not want to damage the connector so I decided to simply back up the S3 on ramps to get a better view and make it easier to get 2 hands on the plug, lying on my back I saw and carefully unplugged them.
I then, before "zip tie-ing" the wires, let them hang so I could take a quick ride. With all 4 windows down and moonroof open I noticed a BASSier exhaust tone in the lower RPM band. Much noticable when down shifting, coming to stop= sounds more like performance note.I'm curious and still wondering if its louder/bass-ier at higher RPM-Redline. I was in Dynamic mode to for best effect. I only drove couple miles back forth to work so far.
So far so good! Ill update as I spend more time in S3.

how do you know if the valves are fully open when you unplug.. also how do you get the plugs out. just tried it and couldn't get them off.
It might be worth using vcds to disable the flaps? thats what i did

Ich fahre auch einen S3 und werde das gleich ausprobieren. Ich finde, dass man den Unterschied mit Kopfhörern recht gut hört. bin gespannt wie es in echt klingen wird besonders in der Tiefgarage :p

+tns ich finde den Audi etwas komfortabler als den Golf R, dieser ist dadurch etwas sportlicher. Aber beide super Autos :) bei mar hat am Ende das Design (besonders innen) beim Audi besser gefallen.

+Adam Bingley Unfortunately public answers to your account are prevented....but anyhow. I also had a hard time getting the plugs out the first time, but its mainly knowing how to do it. Like I show at the end of the video you have to press on top of the part of the plug that is in the box. There is also a little piece that you can slightly press down to loosen in from the box. Then you can wiggle a bit and you should feel that the plug is coming out slowly. Don't pull hard at the end of the cable, that won't help, but only at the plug itself while "squeezing" it from top and bottom.
Wie steckt man die Box ab, wie bekommt man die Klappen auf, damit diese nach dem Abstecken auf bleiben? :)
RunningPics Stecker an der Box auf der rechten Seite nach hinten und auf der linken Seite nach links rausziehen. Klappen sind beim abgeschalteten Motor im offen, und bleiben dann dementsprechend auch offen.
Hi there...Nice video. I'm slightly confused though ? Why are you having to go to Audi to order a part that the car already has ? Is it simply removing the existing plug, that develops the deeper exhaust note ? And, is the part from Audi just a spare that you fit as a 'dummy' but with a glue seal ? Thanks !
+CCN 0301 You are exactly right. But if you use the existing plug, pull out the cables and seal it, there is no way of going back to the original solution by just plugging it in as the original part is "broken". Therefore I decided to buy another pair of plugs and have them in the trunk, to quickly switch between serial and optimized.
Does that plug have a audi id number? Can you give that if it does please.
Does the car shows any fault on the board computer ?

Ich hab den Trick auch seit längerem bei meinem S3 am laufen. Nun habe ich durch zufälliges Stöbern bei einem RS3 Video gesehen, dass dort das ganze genau funktioniert, aber laut dem User mit Vorsicht das ganze empfohlen wird. Weil dadurch dass das Steuergerät nicht weiß welche Stellung die Klappen haben, wird laut ihm die Leistung etwas zurückgenommen.

Kann es aber sein dass dies Einfluss auf das Start-Stop-System hat? Und kann es sein dass ein Drehmomentverlust im unteren Drehzahlbereich zustande kommt?

What is an inside sound generator?
It doesn't actually change, the pitch is the same, it's the loudness that changes. The pitch of Audi exhaust systems is always very low (too low sometimes).

Hi Automann fahre einen Golf 7R Bj 2016 Ende. Habe 4000km runter . Hatte mir zuerst den Focus RS bestellt , aber dann doch umgestiegen auf den 7 R wegen dsg. Wie mache ich das bei dem Golf permanent klappen offen ?Ich habe noch 3 Jahre Garantie nicht das die das checken mein Händler bei der Inspektion. Sind das 2 Stecker ? Und muss man die einfach rausziehen ? Hängen die dann so rum?
Normaler weise sind die klappen ja nur im S Modus offen also dann auch im D Modus korrekt?
Ja, müssten auch beim Golf 7 R zwei Stecker sein. Die Klappen sind im Stand normalerweise offen, sobald man den Motor startet schießen diese (teilweise). Sofern du sie abziehst sollten du wie im Video beschrieben einen Abdichtung der Box vornehmen indem du dir die Stecker nochmal kaufst und einfach reinsteckst. Die Kabelenden sollte man ebenfalls abdichten und nach oben in die Karosserie-Holme stecken damit diese vor Feuchtigkeit und Schmutz geschützt sind. Stecker kann man nur abziehen indem man diesen "zusammendrückt", ist ein kleiner Haken dran. Garantie beeinflusst das nicht wirklich, einfach wieder reinstecken sobald er zur Inspektion geht und die sehen maximal einen alten Fehler im Fehlerspeicher. Die Abgasklappe ist ja kein wirklich relevantes Bauteil für Motor etc.

+Automann-TV Ich bin mir nicht sicher ob ich die Dinger überhaupt brauche. Habe über Diagnose (VCDS) die Klappen deaktiviert, die Frage ist nun ob sie auch wirklich offen sind.
Vagdriver Kann man ganz einfach überprüfen indem man die Hand hinter die Auspuffrohe hält. Wenn aus allen 4 ein leichter Luftstrom kommt sind sie offen, wenn aus den äußeren weniger oder nichts kommt sind sie noch zu. Bei meinem (S-Tronic) muss man die Stecken ziehen wenn das Auto aus ist, denn sie sind im Stand (aus) immer offen und schließen (hörbar) kurz nach dem Anlassen.

Automann-TV how was the fuel consumption when driving it slow? I will probably daily it.. Although I have a diesel for that...
@@MrArt69 kinda late to respond but my cousin managed to get a fuel consumption around 8l/100km on a lazy day.
@@pisti981 hehe I own the car now for 3 years and its great. Running with 500hp for the last year and my fuel consumption is 11 with this setup. Couldn't be happier with the buy :D

I did it on my 2013 Audi S3: i don't know why, but on the right side it's ok the valve is open and i can see the exhaust getting dark after hundreds of kilometers, but on the left side, it's not open :( and the exhaust is still new inside. What could i do? (if i go to my Audi Center to ask that, they will laugh and won't find the solution, i know them). Thank you :)
Do you have manual or S-Tronic? Its the model 8V, so more or less current generation of A3/S3?

Gae tek Ok, I would go ahead and put in the plugs again when the car is off. Then start the car and listen if you can hear the little motors opening and closing the valves. To make sure everything is like standard "air" should only come out of the middle pipes, you can easily feel that by holding you hand directly in front of the pipe. If everything shows up as described, turn off the car again and maybe even close the car. The valves should now be open for all 4 pipes. If you pull the plugs again now and seal them it should show what I have described in this video...better sound left and right;)
Automann-TV I've finally found the problem and his solution: the left valve opening motor is dead so it doesn't do his job. The solution: I took it off, opened manually the valve, and I put the motor back. Cost: nothing 👍🏻
Now the valve is always open, and I will soon have 4 black final exhaust, not only 3 black and one chromed 😉👍🏻
Gae tek Hi! I have this same issue! So I collected my S3 brand new 2 weeks ago and disconnected the valve cable last week. The left outer pipe remains clean whereas the other 3 are dirty. How did you figure out the motor is dead? What can I do to keep it open?
basta togliere solo i connettori? ho bisogna mettere un iterfaccia per chidere le conessioni elettriche?

Interessant, wusste ich gar nicht. Wie gefällt dir eigentlich der S3 so nach einigen Monaten? Übrigens soll der RS3 mit dem Facelift auch als Limo verfügbar sein...
Bin mit dem S3 absolut zufrieden...hab jetzt 36 TSD. km in 10 Monaten abgespult und der läuft extrem gut...die Leistungsentfaltung beeindruckt noch heute. Woher hast du die Info bzgl. der RS3 Facelift Limo, der RS3 ist schon weit oben auf meiner Wunschliste für 2016.

+megagirlyo93 Yes, left AND right. The box on the right faces two the rear and the plug on the left needs to be pulled out to the side. Make sure you press down the clip of the plugs before pulling.

+beeeneee Man muss sich schon auf den Boden legen oder knien;) Auf beiden Seiten ist das reingreifen mit der linken Hand einfacher als mit der rechten, die Box rechtes zeigt nach hinten (also Stecker in Fachrichtung ziehen) und die Box links zeigt nach links (als Stecker im 90 Grad Winkel gegenüber der Fahrtrichtung ziehen). Man kann sich anhand des Kabels zur Box hin-tasten und dann wenn man den Stecker hat von unten und oben leicht drücken damit der kleine Verschluss aufgeht. Dann kann man den Stecker mit leichtem gewackelt vorsichtig rausziehen. In keinem Falle am Kabel selber ziehen, das bringt nichts :)

+Alaa Nassib I didn't have any error so far. At least none that you can see in the car. The dealerships can see a minor error in the code history but thats not a problem. You can ask the parts person about the plugs for the active exhaust of an S3. They will look it up and should be able to specifically order the plugs. That's all you need. Very important is to check this every once in a while an make it really water resistant.

Mit dem Vorteil dass die Stecker bleiben wie sie sind und auch kein Fehler im Fehlerspeicher abgelegt wird.
+Oliver Grob Ob bei mir ein Fehler im Fehlerspeicher kommt kann ich nicht sagen, im Info-Display ist auf jeden Fall nichts. Und auch bei der Inspektion haben sie nichts gesagt. Habe die Stecker aber nun auch wieder drin und werde sie wohl bis auf weiteren drinnen lassen, da auf langen Autobahn-Touren die Klappersteuerung schon sehr hilfreich ist....fahre ja jede Woche 2 Mal 650 km am Stück ;)

I have to chose since i cannot afford like an S6 or even a 3.0 biturbo A6, but i drive an A6 2.0 daily and i think i would miss the size and luxery an A6 gives but driving a S3 would be amazing to cause of the power, but chosing between the power or luxery is really really though ^^ Why did you went for a S3?
SynQ86 I had a A6 2.0 Diesel before with S-Line and all the other stuff, but the car was not emotional enough for my purposes. In the overall costs this S3 was not much more expensive than the A6 2.0 TDI, therefore I went for the smaller class but for a lot more fun and a charismatic drive every day:)

Hi, since this is kind of a tuning video, may I ask: Would you use chiptuning on a brand new Audi S4 if it were your car? I am asking because I hear many different opinions, most people saying it is very risky because it voids warranty and may damage the engine. How likely is this? I have seen many folks installing chips or ecu remaps or even second or third turbochargers on even some very expensive sports cars, so I am inclined to think that chiptuning does not damage the engine often at all. I would highly appreciate any comments. Thanks! :)
There are two things. The technical part and the warranty. From a technical perspective I think a "slight" chip tuning after the car has gained around 5.000 km isn't a huge problem if you drive carefully and normally with it. The warranty is another thing. Every modification to the engine will harm your warranty as Audi won't pay for engine and transmission failures. You have to find a "Chip-Tuning" company that really covers all potential issues caused by this tuning. Then you are pretty save.

+Hans Klostermann Sicher, die beiden haben wirklich einen klasse Sound, wobei der S3 im direkten Vergleich wirklich nicht so viel schlechter klingt wie man es vom 4-Zylinder erwarten würde. Gerade der M235i ist mit dem Performance Exhaust vom Sound her sehr exklusiv.
Automann-TV Na klar. Ich will den S3 nicht schlechtreden, aber 4 Zylinder finde ich vom Sound nur bei Mini, Abarth und Alfa Romeo wirklich überzeugend. Der S3 kommt mir in allem so steril vor, besonders verglichen mit M135i/235i fast schon emotionslos.
Hans Klostermann Ich glaube diese "Emotionslosigkeit" ist auch etwas was von den Test-Formaten bald schon zu krass dargestellt wird. Sicherlich hat der BMW und auch mein MINI JCW mehr Stimme und mehr Emotionen, aber jeder den S3 mal auf einer längeren Autobahn-Etappe gefahren ist weiß, dass auch Perfektionismus seinen Reiz hat. Der Antritt und auch der Sound des 300 PS Motors ist meiner Meinung nach sehr nah dran am M135i. Ich bin damals den M135i für 2 Tage gefahren und war zwar sehr angetan, aber nicht so geflascht ihn dem S3 vorzuziehen, der als LIMO einfach unglaublich gut darsteht. Ich überlege aber nun ernsthaft für 2016 evtl. einen M235i anzuvisieren, dann aber auch mit Automatik und xDrive...und Performance Exhaust:)
+Automann-TV klar, Perfektion ist immer gut, aber mir ist Emotion immer wichtiger. Gerade heute bei kleineren effizienteren Motoren und der klugen Automatik möchte ich die Emotionen eines R6 Heckantriebs nicht gegen einen noch so perfekten 4 Zyl Frontantrieb tauschen. Ich war nie Klassenbester ;) ich wollte immer gut und mit Freude durchkommen haha. Spaß muss sein
