Dropping Into The Largest Blue Nose Mine

- This sprawling abandoned mine has captivated many historians, photographers and mine explorers over the years. We were no exception and eventually made the pilgrimage out to its remote location as well... Perhaps needless to say, we were not disappointed by this mine or its setting.
The ore body at this site was discovered and developed in the 1930s and production of the industrial metals at this mine peaked during the Cold War period.
Some may wonder why I was not as aggressive as normal in chasing down some of the winzes, raises and blocked drifts that we came across... The reason is simple. We were not the first explorers here and I had detailed reports from some of the prior visitors. In other words, I knew which areas had been covered and had a fairly good idea of where things ended up. You'll see me getting aggressive with the exploring into the unknown or virgin mines, but I focus more on just enjoying the known mines like this one (unless there are unexplored areas within it).

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.

Red Diamond product line is still in production at Austin Powder Company. I worked for them for many years in the 90s.
Austin is the Kmart of the shot service and blasting products.
I think these mines that push to what we consider to be "Modern" times, without the workings being all that modern, are fascinating, you see equipment you know is much newer, in mines built to much older standards.
70s and 80s mines are my favorites! Plenty of large modern equipment and electrical hardware, but rail and timbering were still in common use. It makes for very visually interesting mines.

Those grizzly holes were massive so they must have been shifting a lot of bigger ore pieces around.

Wish someone years ago had filmed the crews actually setting the cribbing plus how long it would take to do sections. BTW, you've done an excellent job of video taping and giving a running discussion of this mine. I noticed you don't have any repeating expressions in your talking. Very refreshing.
Awesome mine, nice to see all the mine carts/artifacts that are still in it.
It still amazes me to see the amount of precise engineering, design, labor and the size of the construction underground that rivals the building of full size skyscrapers and huge bridges.
Love the handy work, its not often you see a mine well propped up like that, cribbing was excellent. - Thank you for taking the time to document and share.

Austin Powder Co. Was located in Glen Willow Ohio. It was turned into a land fill that has been closed and slowly developed into a business area and natural park reserve.
It's located less than two miles from where I'm at. Thanks for another great! Mine and explore.
Absolutely awesome mine, so much to see it amazes me how good the timber looks after all those years. Looks like new some of it. I just love looking at the rails & tunnels & the ladders up & down the shafts , need nerves of steel to climb those. Stunning mine enjoyed the tour. 😊👍

Apart from the dust a lot of it looks like it might have stopped working the day before you went it, its kind of eerie in a way...at 17.09 I wonder what the silver thing is sitting on the cribbing? ...its huge.
Tons of beautiful timbering! This much timbering translates to instability. A big mine for sure! Nice artifacts as well! I'll bet there are miners alive to this day that worked this mine. Nice capture of it Justin!
You have to wonder how they got all that equipment down there. A lot of work!

Man there was some pretty amazing infrastructure and carpentry.
The mine is impressive, but the carpentry is incredible. Can't imagine trying to haul all that lumber underground, must have taken eons

This mine showed itself off to you for sure like loads of ore cars and shafts and tones of wood everywhere you go , i was like shocked to how big the mine was cause i bet there was like 10000 miners working in there at the time or less who knows but i hope that mine gets used again cause most places in there looked fairly new.

It always amazes me how much wood and steel that's in these mines and the guys that drug all of if into the mines. And also ,seems like most of these mines have flat floors in their haulage areas.
just looked up Austin Powder company it looks like a good company and this is a great mine it looks like they closed it for the holidays vary cool thou to see it in tghis great condition !

Impressive mate. Looks like newer drives have blasted through much older workings? Some electrical looked to be 1960's or 70's.
Looks like it’s was worked into the late 80’s or early 90’s.
Some of the cribbing is uniform and some is hastily done. I'm aware of through family connections of cases bad ground incidents in the mining district some of which resulted areas being sealed due to fatalities or worker safety.
This mine is nicer than my basement.
What precautions do you take to avoid any gas pockets, fungi or mold?
I bet there are a lot of interesting and frightening secrets beyond the inaccessible parts of this mine.

The way it was left, it looks like they thought they might start it up again. Looked like most of the electric was about turn on ready.
That’s a big mine and lots of money went into it and frame working plus electricity

7:45 I heavily disagree. The blocked off passage saying KEEP OUT was far more interesting than an hallway with just plain ore chutes.
One I've only seen in this video and the other is shown in every upload. Seriously ore chutes? Even that large minecart was more interesting
