To me, it's a metaphor for how society makes it so much harder for smarter people to be themselves while celebrating mediocrity at every point and cutting the head off of anyone who sticks theirs out above the rest
It is directly explaining how communism works. You want equity between a person who can walk, and one who can't, then you have to destroy the legs of the walking person. That's communism. How do you get equity between a starving person and one who isn't starving? You starve the other. And now you have "equity".
yay I read this for online class assignment and I fell in love with this story so I watch this video before breakfast every morning Edit: WE ARE NOW READING THIS SAME STORY IN MY 10TH GRADE ENGLISH CLASS AND I- 😭😭😭
Me too. I taught high school English and students had a hard time with this story. It confused many. They had no idea what to make of such a "silly" tale. Great opportunity to discuss satire, hyperbole. I always loved the phrase "all Halloween and hardware." Comedy and tragedy intertwined. Vonnegut was a delight.

equality sounds good on paper but in reality you would have to disable smart people, hide pretty people, weigh down dancers.. just so no-one feels bad about themselves.. it is a warning not to make this kind of future for ourselves.

It's funny because if your read the story it sounds like the governments trying to stop a tyrant, but the movie makes it sound like libertarian nightmare. Its a criticism social darwinism the question is what should we do with the old system of Tyrants if that doesn't create a society where all people Successful? How would one get around Social darwinism within society where equality is for everyone, or is that just another lie? Are people just doomed to be poor and suffer because they are ugly, stupid, and weak?
