- Stockport County Football Club is a professional @sociation_football club based in @ockport, @eater_Manchester, England. The team competes in @L_League_Two, the fourth tier of the @glish_football_league_system, but will play in @L_League_One in the @24%E2%80%9325_in_English_football season after winning the @23%E2%80%9324_EFL_League_Two title.
Formed in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers, they were renamed Stockport County in 1890 after the @unty_Borough_of_Stockport. The team have played in blue and white @t_(association_football) since 1914; their original colours were red and white. The club is nicknamed "The Hatters" after the town's former hat-making industry. Stockport have played at @geley_Park since 1902.
Stockport first joined the @glish_Football_League in 1900 but had to seek @-election_(Football_League) in 1904. The club were not re-elected and spent one season outside the competition before they returned for the @05%E2%80%9306_Football_League. County then played in the Football League continuously for 106 years until 2011, mostly in the lower divisions. The team won their first league championship in @21%E2%80%9322_Football_League, the newly created @otball_League_Third_Division_North. Two league championships followed in @36%E2%80%9337_Football_League (Third Division North) and @66%E2%80%9367_Football_League (@otball_League_Fourth_Division). The 1990s was the team's most successful period, when Stockport competed in the @otball_League_First_Division for five seasons and reached the @L_Cup semi-finals in @96%E2%80%9397_Football_League_Cup. County also made four appearances at @mbley_Stadium_(1923) during this period, two in the @L_Trophy and two in the @glish_Football_League_play-offs, but lost on each occasion.
After financial difficulties in the early 2000s, the club fell back down the divisions, and were @omotion_and_relegation out of the Football League at the end of the @10%E2%80%9311_Football_League_Two, followed by relegation to the sixth tier in 2012-13. Stockport stabilised on and off the pitch in the following seasons, and won promotion to the fifth tier in @18%E2%80%9319_National_League. In @21%E2%80%9322_National_League, County topped the National League, securing promotion back to the EFL after an 11-year absence. In their first season back in League Two, Stockport finished 4th and reached the @23_EFL_League_Two_play-off_final, losing to @rlisle_United_F.C. at @mbley_Stadium.
