Es ist eigentlich kein deutsches Volkslied. Volkslieder haben grundsätzlich keinen Autoren, sondern sind überliefert. Dieses Lied hat eine eindeutige Autorenschaft: Franz Schubert. Was es vermeintlich zu einem Volkslied macht, ist die (später gekommene) Männerchorversion des Stückes, sodass im späten 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts jeder Männerchor dieses Werk dudelte und alle es kannten :) Das macht es aber nicht zu einem "alten deutschen Volkslied" - es bleibt ein Kunstlied.
