So today is Mr. Geddy Lee's 70th birthday...so let's raise a toast and celebrate the many things special about this man...his left pinky, his strained voice in later years, his dictatorship, his one legged hop, his open hand head slap(during YYZeee), he wrote Different Strings, and the fact that he is arguably the greatest multi-faceted hard rock musician that has ever lived...cheers to you, Dirk!!!🍻🤘
Love the intro - I wish Alex would release an album of pieces like that, including Broon's Bane - I would play it on repeat. Neil writes about Closer to the Heart in one of his books - Geddy wanted to add it mid-tour to the R30 set list without dropping another song, and Neil said 'no'....a few days later Geddy tries to get them to rehearse it, Neil has to say 'no' more forcefully this time. Later on Alex told Neil he was relieved as he didn't want to do it either 😂
I’ve said this before, I think…I’ve heard this song multiple thousands of times over 30+ years…a little variety in the arrangements are a breath of fresh air for us old salts. 😁
Just them having fun mixing it up a bit. Why not? And yes. Happy 70th birthday to’I can do whatever I want’ Geddy Lee. 😉🍻🔥🎉🎊🍻 I hope it’s a great day! Happy weekend everyone.
My favourite will always be off show of hands, even though it has the jam session at the end; which I love, it's because I was there when they filmed it at the NEC Birmingham and I can watch it a zillion times and say I was there 😊😅😅
In the past, they did an extended coda at the end where it fades out on the studio version. I really liked that. But this was... different. I suppose you have to give them some leeway since they probably want to keep the song interesting and fresh, for themselves if anything.
Love this 12 string solo!! I think I’ve said it before, if he had an album of stuff like that, I’d be the 1st one in line to get one! Closer to the Heart was a little weird, it like you said… because they can! Be well and Gos bless… from Texas!!
Neil needs a little break and we get some fabulous 12 string music from Alex, fire and we love it! We are going back in time and Alex is putting on his “Working Man” clothes. Don’t get this whole Geddy dictatorship thing, this band is the ultimate three man collaboration, no egos here, they have always split the writing credits three ways, their total net worth is pretty much the same for all of them; deservedly so. I think Alex has the biggest hand in putting the set lists together, not completely sure on that but I think I read it somewhere, somebody can fact check that if they like. Yes Geddy is very much a detail man, you don’t achieve greatness by letting things slide, but dictator, overly harsh. Just my opinion and observations of the band. Cheers Justin.
I never noticed before, Alex changes twice during this show and Geddy once - must be hot under all those lights. I think the dictator thing is just a joke because Geddy has a kind of "don't mess with me" aura about him and has described himself as the bossy one. I've never heard of Alex being most in charge of set-lists, I think they all work that out equally - maybe you're thinking of his "Omega Concern" device for deciding album track order?
Just came on to say much the same. Dictatorship isn't just harsh, it's also just wrong. Wrong word, wrong perception. More stubborn and ready to adapt to change than the other two, but in the end, he will consider and accept what the other two (or even just the one) says. Example, he and Alex wanted to keep touring, just a few times a year, after R40, but Neil said no, so no it was.
I don’t think it’s as much a just because they can as much as a they’ve played it for over 30 years and they have to find ways to keep it interesting. It is what it is. I know they’ve stopped playing songs because they got tired of playing them. Either way, good song. Hard for Ged to hit the notes.
I actually really like this version, including the changed part (maybe done to allow Geddy to sing a lower part?)...I think the playing is great but Geddy struggles right at the start to hit those highs and adds his little squeak as well.
They've made multiple changes to the arrangement of CTTH over the years. Is this my favorite? Nah. But it's not terrible by any means. Oh yeah, I guess the Caravan thundered onwards without us... on our way at last...
Alex sporting his Neil Young look. 😄 I totally forgot about this version of "Closer to the Heart", but poor Geddy's voice is really going. He's not going anywhere near the higher notes.
The intro would have sounded better on his custom les Paul with the piezo. Then run it through a 12 string emulator. Yeah. That would have been better. 😉
Not sure about the changes to the song, i guess they have to come up with ways to keep old songs fresh. Anyway it's all worth it to get a smile out of Neil mid-concert.
I enjoy your rush reviews... its all good.. but u did strike on one major point.. He is Geddy Lee and he has earned the right to do whatever he wants... and whatever it is.. I will Love it !! Long Live Rush !!
If they have to rearrange it like this then just play a different song. They have a few more. Or at least full acoustic CTTH. Give “O’Malley” a real break.
Love Geddy, but his vocals just started going way downhill after about 2008. If Neil would not have passed away, they would have had to really consider shutting it down. He voice was such a big part of their music

I don't think he wrote Different Strings by himself - he wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music. But yes, Happy Birthday Dirk! 🥳
hahahaha brilliant
Happy birthday!
Here here!!
go geddy go 🤘🤘🤘

I love when they change songs up a bit. I've heard the song a gazillion times the proper way. It's nice to have an unexpected diversion.
That 12 string was lovely. ❤❤❤ and Yes Happy Birthday Geddy!!! 🎉

Yes...why the hell not...35yrs later and a thousand renditions...all in fun..good stuff
Nothing will ever beat the Different Stages version but the 12 string intro was fire.
O'Malley (Neil) is taking a break after his drum solo.
That 12 string though...🥰

Always love Alex on 12 strings. :)

Forgot to honour Gershon Eliezer Weinrib A.K.A Gary Lee Weinrib best known as Geddy Lee, 70 years old today. Rock on Geddy, 🎂🥳🎉

Happy 70th Birthday Geddy. I posted Analog Kid Live to celebrate Dirk. Cheers to the amazing virtuoso Bassist Front Man of Rush. 🍻♌🤘
Happy Birthday Geddy!😊

@@martyadams3172 Good points, thank you Marty.
Yeah the dictatorship bs has run its course...40+ years of complete calloboration!
@@justimprovising Thank you Jo, great points.
Totally agree bud

Very odd version but it is still a great song. Happy birthday Geddy!!!!!
I thought the change was pretty cool like a breath of fresh air
I actually really like this version, including the changed part (maybe done to allow Geddy to sing a lower part?)...I think the playing is great but Geddy struggles right at the start to hit those highs and adds his little squeak as well.
Isnt this what Alex wore when they did workingman live in Cleveland, Also Ged and Neil, With that I believe workingman live is the encore

Today is Geddy Lee's birthday .
It is also my birthday. I can tell
you this has done nothing for
my musical ability.
Interesting version.
Alex sporting his Neil Young look. 😄 I totally forgot about this version of "Closer to the Heart", but poor Geddy's voice is really going. He's not going anywhere near the higher notes.
I will try to resist... buying a 12-string (or double-neck!) 😅
The intro would have sounded better on his custom les Paul with the piezo. Then run it through a 12 string emulator. Yeah. That would have been better. 😉

I think the change was to avoid Geddy singing high for the last bit. Only thing I can think of.
Agree, the change up in the song didn't work very well, seemed unnecessary. Still love them
