    The Balanced Action Selmer is a better instrument. It has better action (less fingerwork noise) and its tone doesn't choke the horn immediately; the horn allows more headroom to sculpt the tone as you wish. Action alone is worth it (your recordings will sound cleaner), and the rest is a bonus, which an advanced player such as yourself can fully appreciate. Go for it.

    @DynamixWarePro Před 6 lety +2

    I haven't been playing the saxophone long so don't yet know a whole lot, but from what I hear, there is a a difference in the two. Your sax sounds a little brighter than the SBA which sounds a little darker and has a bit more projection to the sound.

    really like the new one. sounds amazing a little clearer than old one

  • @Robonza
    @Robonza Před 6 lety

    The new one definitely sounds quite a bit brighter, less flat. But that's a lot of money. If you have the money "spare" or can recoup it playing easily then buy it for sure.

  • @timkies3997
    @timkies3997 Před 6 lety +3

    It's hard to spend other people's money, unless of course you are from the government. That being said, I think that your old sax sounds just as nice as the new one. So then, it comes down to playability. Is the balanced action so much easier to play, that it is worth the money? This is not a rhetorical question, because it certainly can be so much better that the money is justified, especially since you are making a living with that horn.
    Another way to look at it is that if you do chose to buy the new sax, for about 4000 pounds, and it serves you well for a decade, then you are basically spending 400 pounds per year to upgrade from what you are playing now. Now even though 400 pounds is nothing to sneeze at, you will more than make up for it simply by being able to enjoy your gigs a little bit more, due to the new horn, IF that is a big enough difference to you.
    Of course, if it is just one of those, Gee Whiz, it would be nice to have that horn, but I am still really happy with the one I am playing, and hate to get rid of it, then perhaps you have your answer.
    No matter what you decide, it really is a no lose proposition. So I can't tell you what to do, but I can say that what you have now is a great sound, and it all depends on whether or not you want something a little bit easier to play. The F# key should not be much of a deal breaker, I would think, since you can play around it rather easily.
    You can always toss a coin into the air, and then, while it is up there, figure out which one you hope it lands on, and you then know the route to take, without even looking at the coin.
    Good luck, and I know you will be happy, no matter what you choose to do.

    I don't know if it is the mic you are recording with or the audio on my Mac or earbuds, but there's not a whole lot of difference between the two. Perhaps on the SBA you are a little bit timid (as if you are ever timid!), but that's probably because it is new and different. A month or so on the new horn and that bit of uncertainty will all be gone.
    So it comes down to how you feel about playing it - something we can't assess, only you.
    If you don't buy the SBA, what else are you going to spend the 4000 quid on? You're a saxophone player!

  • @geoffreycox8687
    @geoffreycox8687 Před 6 lety

    If you are just playing contemporary music, your sax is better for that. The SBA would be fab for jazz though. If it really makes you feel good though, buy it as it might make you feel better when playing.

      I think it could be great to have 2 different horns depending on the gig I'm heading to. I'm fortunate to have a really varied career and get booked for jazz, chillout and really lively house music as well. I have been thinking a lot about this horn....

  • @MarkALong64

    The balanced action does has a richer tone. They both sound good but yes, there is a marked difference in tone and if you like it, I don't think that you would be making a mistake in getting it.

  • @DaveSullyMusic
    @DaveSullyMusic Před 6 lety

    Your current sax has a more open, clear tone. The balanced action is a darker complex tone, but i really dig it. I think there's enough variation between the two to justify having both. You sound great on both of them, but i could see you using them in different scenarios. Go for it!

    I've played many instruments for years, but new to sax. But, my rule is the same for all of them, especially as the tone difference seems subtle: Does it instantly become a part of you, make you smile on the inside, and inspire not to put it down?

    Hey girl, both sound very close and I kinda think the new one may sound a bit richer. It really depends on how much easier it is to get the notes out. If playing is very similar minus the f sharp key I would say save your money:) I hope this helps.

    • @cheztaylorsax
      @cheztaylorsax  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the comment eric. I guess what's difficult to translate over youtube is the "feel" of the instrument. There is definitely something special about this one which I can't quite put my finger on.....it's just a good fit if you know what I mean?!

  • @parttroll1
    @parttroll1 Před 6 lety

    If there is a difference to my 47 year old ears its very subtle! I think the Selmer Super Balanced Action perhaps sounds a bit more mellow and has more punch / projection than your sax. Is it worth £4000? If you have it as long as your current sax it works out at £200 a year which is not much over that time frame esp if you are getting plenty of gigs in, (not including insurance and maintenance). Go for it :)

  • @nickcaplanson4124
    @nickcaplanson4124 Před 6 lety

    As far as sound, it is hard to justify the cost if that is your only criteria. Both horns sound top notch to me. But the BA is a super cool horn for several reasons. There is something about a good vintage horn that is just hard to completely describe or quantify - a mystique if you will. Does it make you,feel like playing more ? Do you get more pleasure from playing it ? If the answer is yes and you can afford it - Buy it and don't look back ! The BA is a great horn and I find that there is something very special about playing a horn that has lived through History and brought joy and entertainment to countless people over its life. I wish you well and supreme happiness in whatever decision you make.

    • @cheztaylorsax
      @cheztaylorsax  Před 6 lety

      Thanks so much for the comment Nick. It's strange, there's more to it than just the sound difference really. You're right, it's how it sits with you. I feel like me and the BA bonded ;-)

    I wished I had your dilemma. Apart from the sentiment of your oldie, the BAS had the upper hand. In fact It's just what I would buy if I had the spare bucks.
    Did you?

  • @ma-dr5te
    @ma-dr5te Před 6 lety

    There is definitely a difference. The super balanced has a more easy jazz feeling to it. The instrument just completely suits that genre. I don't know how I'd feel about paying a sax with no f# key but I guess that adds to its aesthetic. The selmer is obviously gorgeous and your familiarity with it makes it sing, however compared to the super balanced it does feel a little forced at times when playing some runs. But that in itself is a style so I guess it depends on what you're after.

    • @cheztaylorsax
      @cheztaylorsax  Před 6 lety

      Helpful comment max. I think you've hit the nail on the head with the "forced" the balanced action just feels so effortless. I guess that's something which can't translate over youtube - the "feel" of the instrument...

    The balanced does have a mellower tone,,, but who wants mellow when you are a fan of growl and attitude. There is the play ability of course and the balanced series have a reputation for being lighter on playing, at the end of the day if you were able to walk out of the shop without buying it you are not as impulsive as me.

    Ok.... groing up with a hifi nerd dad i like to think i have slightly better hearing then the average joe/joanne. Ill just get it out now and say the new one is better. It has a nicer jazzy type tone to it and the growls you added sounded soo much better and natural than on your old one. if you want me to go into more detail just say so but your current sax is still very good. but ill leave with this. its an upgrade from 18k gold to 24k gold. the difference is slight but to a trained ear you can tell the difference!

    I would say sound wise the differences are minimal; your sound dominates. Parker played on a plastic sax and by all accounts sounded great. The issue here really is how it makes you feel when you're playing it. I saw the other video when you first played it and coming back to it shows it's an itch you have to scratch! Need and want are very different things, but its OK to work hard and get the things you want as well as the things you need. So if you have the money treat yourself, and if after a while you decide to go back to your old horn you won't have lost any money on this one except perhaps sales commission, they seem to hold they're value pretty well (it might even be a decent investment). If you can and you don't, then I think it will grate on you over time.

    If you can afford it and are falling ‘in like’ with it, buy it, take it home on a trial period. Live with it for a while and if you fall ‘in love’ keep it. If not, return. I think they have a return with in a certain period for full refund (14 days). Then you will know. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. You’ll still sound great on your Series II.
