As a Turk, I really wanted to learn Greek. I know so many Greek people will hate me because I'm turkish. But I feel very close to the Greeks. Because my great-grandfather was born in Thessaloniki and he was forced to leave there and live in Turkey. After hearing this story, I was very sorry for the Greek and Turkish people who had to leave their homes and birth places. And that's why I think we should support and live in peace with each other. 🇹🇷🇬🇷

      Way to go brother.
Haven't been to Greece but did go to Turkey in 97. Had a blast and the Turkish people I met were very hospitable. Besides which, most of the one's involved in the tourist trade could speak 3,4,5 languages!

Why Aayush's name would appear this way in Greek is because-once again-he's got some sounds-the and the -that don't have easy, direct Greek-letter correspondences; therefore, Greek uses these workaround kludges (although the sigma and zeta in his Grecized name would receive diereses/umlauts to compensate for the lack of easy equivalents in modern Greek for these foreign loan phonemes, likewise-the pi and tav would wear tildes atop 'em, to indicate that these receive a voicing buzz along with their sounds.).

It is not a proper Greek word. It was actually taken from Italian. The proper word for "but" is "αλλά", and "μα" is used in a sort of 'complaining" way. Eg: "But why did you eat all the fries?!". Modern Greek has many borrowed words from different languages, like Turkish, French, Italian, and even Spanish!

I just started teaching myself Greek a few days ago with Duelingo. We have family over there who luckily can speak and write in English but we would be able to communicate on a much deeper level if I was able to learn the language. It’s so overwhelming. If there’s anyone here who has succeeded in learning it, do you have any tips on what helped you?

@@MountainGardenGirl definitely. Learning it has been on the back burner for awhile due to a new job taking up all my time but I can read and write it almost as quickly as I can English. Speaking it in any way that sounds natural is still impossible, but I could definitely get by with the basics if I were to visit Greece. Having exposure to the spoken language would be a huge help, I just never had that luxury. As far as reading and writing, repetition is really all it takes and eventually it’ll stick.

Hallo James! I have only just started learning Greek after a wonderful holiday in Greece. I haven't even started with Duolingo yet. I am only halfway through the alphavito. But I have a lot of experience learning several other european languages, plus I am an English teacher, so here is a tip I give to all my students: LISTENING! Listening to naturally spoken Greek (or any other language for that matter) is the closest thing to learning your mother tongue as a baby. Of course, when you are an absolute beginner it's frustrating to listen to people talking and you don't understand a single word. But it's important to keep these two things in mind: baby steps and REPETITION. This channel has loads of materials, for beginners as well, so you can choose one of those playlists and watch several videos carefully once or twice using captions so that you can get the gist, and after that you just keep listening to them in the background as often as you can (while driving a car, jogging, etc.). When you get bored with them, you move on to the next set of videos/audio recordings. Over time, gradually, patterns will begin to emerge, you will start recognizing words, phrases, and after a while you will just be able to say the right thing at the right time, without even knowing how you knew it. it was your subconscious mind doing the trick and acquiring the language. Of course, it wil work much better if you devote regular time slots for learning new words, some basic grammar at least, and of course Duolingo is just great for practising, as well. Hope this helps. Lots of luck learning Greek. Let me know how it works.
P.S. Another great resource is the channel "Easy Greek", where you can listen to real spoken Greek and it's a lot of fun as well.
