  • In this video we explain how to build a heavy duty truck loading ramp! we decided to make this ramp because we were dropping off a custom built smoker that we made to its new owner!! The ramp handled the 300 pound smoker great!!

Nice build. Instead of the chain set up to hold it to the truck, what about some screw eyes in the 2x4s and some ratchet straps to hold it to the truck. You probably carry around ratchet straps to secure the grill or whatever anyway.

Great instructions! Just made this with free lumber off facebook marketplace and hardware I already had. I love that it came together in a short time. Thank you!

Piano hinge both the top and bottom where the ply comes in contact with ground and bed of truck....that way its a flat surface and you wont break the ply.

Gotta Love that BigBox lumber... Very creative! Definitely a design I can use...

overbuilt. I just attached a 3/4 x 2" 4' long strip of pine to my ramp with steel wire and it sits down in the crack between the tail gate and the bed. Holds the ramp to prevent slipping. I cut to hand holds on one side of ramp and rounded them over with router for comfort, so I can hold the ramp as moving it in and out of storage shed. Painted it so no problem if caught in rain or left out over the winter. 😀 But your approach gives you more father son time. I treasure all the projects I built with my dad and try not to think of how much easier we could have done it.

Great video. For God's sake use a little cutting oil on that holesaw bit when using it on metal like that. 😂

At what point did you think "screw this twisted lumber, let's just pick the damned thing up and put it in the bed"????

How do you transport the ramp to unload at destination?

Easy....just build another ramp when you get to your destination....lol

what kind of hinges did you use? I'm planning on making two smaller ramps (using 2x8x8 for the base and one/two 2x2x8 as walls) with a hinge folding each one in half, and I'm not sure what kind of door hinge will be good enough.
This version will take up less space for portability, but requires the use of dolly & straps for non-wheel items (might be more difficult for heavier items but won't know for sure until in use. Main reason I built is for a rolling tool box, but I will eventually need to use it for moving appliances and possibly furniture.
Edit: I saw someone say use piano hinge for build in video and might go with that since it'll cover more of the width on the boards. Additionally, I may add a folding leg support to pull out when lifting heavy items and will be just to put less weight on the hinge.

We just used standard door hinges on this project. Piano hinge would definitely hold up better!

Shouldn't you lube your bit when drilling into steel?

From the ground to the truck or standard cargo van, how long the ramp should be to place a 500 pound dolly in without much strength needed? Thinking to lower the steep of the ramp, should I do an 8 foot length ramp?
