Rivalries in the 1980s was not manufactured - it was through proper competitive matching - Davis/Higgins Davis/Hendry - The problem with Snooker is that it is a very very difficult game, which is too hard for youngsters today with a smaller attention span.

What I have noticed watching the Asian matches is the audience apart from being huge is younger with a lot more women. Not sure how you can bottle that and bring back to England.

Isnt it funny how we doubt Eddie
 but look at boxing
they way they have all this build up pre match
if all Eddie does is bring what he knows from boxing over then were probably going to get our characters in Snooker showcased again
 we just need the Characters!

For once I do agree with Eddie to an extent. Normally I can't stand his egotism and materialism but he has a refreshingly balanced outlook it seems - we need to look for ways to make more money in the game to bring more young players in and give them financial incentive, but also be very cautious not to destroy the traditional side of the game. Even though I'm young I'm more on the tradition side, but I do think the rise in popularity in China is fantastic - I really hope this can be reflected on the continent in places like Germany and Belgium after Brecel's triumph, and it seems the game has some following in the middle east. We should celebrate that snooker is no longer just a British Isles based game.
Either way I still hope events keep their traditional aspect.
I guess another issue with rising popularity in the game is ticket prices go up and it goes more the way football has where the top level is no longer affordable (some may say it already isnt in snooker). But like everything for me it's about finding a balance and not sacrificing the true heart of the game for profits, which may be Eddie's real intention even if he seems to have a more nuanced opinion here

Interesting part about dress and traditional quiet audiences. Of those two I am not sure the dress is the main problem even for younger audiences. I think it's just that it is boring when it is slow, when the audience can't be felt, and (frankly) when the players are so polite and careful and overly respectful. Just think of all the videos we go back and watch when we see Mark Williams joking around, or other players showing emotion. Even in the interviews! Practically every time i watch an interview I find myself waiting for someone to look at the camera and say "I am coming for ya!" but it never happens. Maybe trash talk full out doesn't have much of a place in such a prim and proper sport, but a little bit could go a long way. Anyway, about dress, I don't often notice what they are wearing... except with some of the tatoos that players have. Now that makes it more interesting! It needs to be more about character and personality, less about posturing.
