Springtime in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut! (Hub of the Kivalliq Region) 🇨🇦

  • Is Rankin Inlet, Nunavut worth visiting? Canada's Central Arctic town - the hub of the Kivalliq Region - is definitely at its best during the milder months of June, July, and August, when average temperatures hover between 5C and 15C, depending on the week.
    During my layover in this Arctic hub, I enjoyed a hike out to the famous Inukshuk statue (14 feet tall!), had a surprisingly inexpensive meal at the local Turaavik Restaurant, took a muddy walk down to the Hudson Bay shoreline, and gawked at the high prices of groceries and goods here in the far north.
    Considering a trip to Rankin Inlet? Better start saving! Prices to fly here average around $1500-2000, and hotels are $215 per night. It's not cheap, but it's definitely worthwhile.

      It’s definitely hard to do a lot, especially during the harsh winter months. I barely went outside unless absolutely necessary when it was -40C outside 🥶 But I do love the territory, its culture and its landscapes.

      Yes, it's incredible sad and heartbreaking. I lived in Nunavut for three years so I am no stranger to those types of problems, having seen them with my own eyes.

      Check out my other Nunavut videos on CZcams to learn more about the region - you can find them in my "Arctic" playlist.

    Thanks for posting this! I used to live there in the mid-2000s (there are some super old videos of town on my channel) so it's fun to see the place again, as I haven't been back. It's funny how not much has changed. The Co-op grocery store and restaurant are exactly how I remember them. I loved living there and miss it.

    I am called to be a missionary around the Hudson Bay area. Nice! The problem is I don't like cold! I think it's Nunavut. This video just popped up.

      Are you LDS? Very cool that you're headed to Nunavut - but you should probably get used to the cold 😂 I hope you enjoyed the video - check out the other videos in my Arctic playlist as well!

    Nice video Dave! Thank you for showing this remote location. Too expensive for me unfortunately can't afford $299 for a hotel room and if I could afford it I would probably go there with sneakers and think I would have a great time there.🤣So thank you for sharing this journey.😀

      My pleasure! I hope you get a chance to see the Canadian Arctic at some point. Maybe next time I am working up there we can coincide plans and you'll have a place to stay for free. Maybe 2023-24? More from Nunavut territory to come!

      LOL - in southern Canada, I think. You definitely need to learn to make food stretch up in the Arctic! Having lived there for about a year at the time this video was filmed, I had thought at the time that the burger was borderline gluttonous 😂

    So how many dine-in, sit down restaurants are there in Rankin Inlet? I know if the Captain’s Galley, and the one you ended up eating at in this video. Are there any others in town? Awesome video BTW :-]

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  Před rokem +1

      I think those are the two main ones, and there’s a few take out places - Tim Hortons, a Donair place, and a pizza place if I recall. I believe a couple of the smaller hotels offer some dining service but I’m not sure. And thank you! I appreciate the kind words 🙏
