Honestly I'm very disappointed at the fact that there is no miis in this game. Being able to play and customize my miis stats and clothes was one of the reasons why I loved Mario & Sonic Rio 2016.
Not to mention it looks like Nintendo is trying to make everyone forget about miis now, despite the fact that Mii games Did the best compared to almost ALL OF THEIR OTHER GAMES. But that won't stop me from praying for a Tomodachi life for the switch.
Yet they trademark the mii later on
Rio was also better because the characters would interact with each other when they won as a team. This game doesn't even do something that simple. Also I do enjoy miis.

Just so everyone knows and isnt confused there are unlockable characters for different types of games
For Ex: U can unlock Diddy Kong but only play with him on rugby since he specials on that, same with Larry he can only be used on equestrian since he specials on that but he cant be used for other games such as surfing or skateboarding.
Well alpha dream did help with the game.

Vonic the rabbit superstar, Miis aren’t well represented on the switch. So they probably wont make it a future dlc. Perhaps they will put them in as a future update. But the chances are slim. Both would be good ideas for representing miis in this game and they most likely will add them in some way. They were included in every console version for the Wii and Wii U and once for the 3ds. So it’s kind of half and half weather the miis will be in or not.
