  • The upcoming 360Hz monitors which have NVIDIA's Reflex Latency Analyzer built right into the display promise to allow gamers to quickly and easily measure system latency.
    Let's take a look.
    Correction: The monitor is an Asus PG259QN*R* as you can see in the OSD at 2:28

    Sorry if that video feels rushed.
    Customs loves me so much that they hold on to my packages for as long as they possibly can, which in this case meant I got it just barely before the embargo ended.
    So to release the video today some midnight oil had to be burned and todays lunch break between meetings had to be sacrificed. 😅
    I hope you still find the information in this first look video useful.

    Wouldn't it make more sense to measure something more consistent and instant like ammo count rather than semi-random and ambiguous like muzzle flash, which also deals with animation to kick in, and how long the animation lasts to get to the bright flash itself. It might not be a huge difference but if you're this dedicated I dont understand why something so vague was chosen rather than something obvious and consistent like ammo counters.

      There's not really a demand on Linux because how many comp games even run on Linux... Fortnite doesn't, CSGO (kind of does no 3rd party clients so not good enough for competitive play) so I am not going to count that. League kind of does through wine, so that leaves just Dota 2 as the only game with native Linux support if I am not mistaken...
      I know this will piss people off, I'm just saying not even 5% of comp gamers would play their games on Linux so who would use an already niche product on Linux...

    • @uiopuiop3472

      @@gypsyvirgin5644 Only competitive games that are online-only don't work on Linux (perfectly). Most Linux users don't really want to play those games anyway most of the time, as they go against the whole Linux philosophy. Fortnite is fully online dependent and has a lot of anti-consumer features so I wouldn't play it even if it was on Linux. Same with Valorant, with it's spyware anti-cheat. CS:GO on the other hand works perfectly on Linux, and you can even host your own servers for it or use competitive games (like FaceIt without any kind of invasive anti-cheat client) without any troubles. All the games I play work perfectly on Linux, most even better than under Windows performance-wise.

    • @gypsyvirgin5644

      @@uiopuiop3472 Yeah but my point is this targetted at comp gamers, to be a competitive player some of these 'work' on Linux but realistically your going to use windows. I use Linux on my laptop for uni (dual boot with windows) but I don't game on it. 360hz is kind of pointless for single player games, I'd much rather play on a 4k 120hz or 1440p 240hz for single player. And as comp game dota 2 is the only one that I think works perfectly so it's a niche product, and only really has a good use case on a couple of games. It's not really worth Nvidia nor the manufacturers time and effort to implement these features on Linux.
      I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, I am just saying I don't think they will at least not any time soon.
      The only annoying thing about windows gaming is games in Linux have instantaneous alt-tabbing most windows games don't.

    so, is this hardcoded to work with shooter muzzleflashes? Is it always the left button of the mouse and then looking for increased brightness? Because I imagine it might be possible to make it work with a whole lot more games if it could also check for a drop in brightness, clear colour change, and allows you to use any mouse button/keyboard/controller. I suppose the latter doesn't matter for your testing, but if a player wants to have this on 24/7 to monitor the game they're playing competitively, then they need to be able to check it with the device they're playing.

What I get from this info is that... unless you already have a low latency connection to the server of a given online game (something around 10ms)... the system latency only plays a minor role on the gaming experience, right? Unfortunately, I hardly get a latency lower than 40ms in the games I play... so having a system with 10ms or 20ms doesn't seem to matter.

      @BattleNonSense  Před 3 lety +2

      _"unless you already have a low latency connection to the server of a given online game"_
      System Latency and Network Latency are 2 different things.
      *high Network Latency* will cause delayed hit registration, receiving damage behind cover, ...
      *high System Latency* will make the game feel delayed as it does not instantly respond to your input. In fast paced games this means that you are more likely to crash your plane/car, etc.
      In online shooters it also means that enemy players show up on your screen *later*, as the PC needs longer to get that frame onto your display (peekers advantage).

    I think a much better method is to test it with the paint-bucket tool in paint or similar software so that there's no ambiguity on muzzle flash animations, since those animations are not INSTANT and progress over time.

    • @BattleNonSense
      @BattleNonSense  Před 3 lety +3

      The purpose of RLA is to allow gamers to test and optimize the latency of *games* - and find out how system latency is affected by certain in-game settings.
      The Reflex SDK also allows game devs to add an option to flash a white rectangle on screen when a mouse click is detected (which you can enabled in Fortnite).
      Move the detection area there and you do not have to base the measurment on a muzzle flash.
      However that will not tell you the actual delay between the button press and the gun firing - especially in games which use a trigger delay mechanic (Apex, Battlefield).
      But with that additional white rectangle to measure system latency with you can even measure that trigger delay.
      Unless you want to know the delay of the paint bucket tool in paint, that application is a bad choice to test system latency. The result will also not tell you anything useful about your system or peripherals as this application is not designed to have little delay and it runs in a window on your windows desktop which adds delay.
      If you want to test/compare the delay of different mice with RLA, then you have to use an application like nvidia's SOL_Latency_App, which is optimized to have very little latency and changes the color of the entire screen on mouse click.

    • @BattleNonSense
      @BattleNonSense  Před 3 lety +1

      RLA makes it easy for players to identify why a game feels strange/delayed - that is its main purpose. :)
      Depending on what the issue is you can get System Latency from 100ms to 35ms or less _(v-sync, game not running exclusive fullscreen mode sometimes even though you choose that setting, GPU bound, bad external or internal FPS limiter, used some tricks that ultimately screwed up the system, game uses trigger delay as game mechanic!, .....)._
      The idea behind RLA is to eliminate the guesswork and allow players to measure the responsiveness of a game.
      If you need that or not is a different question. :)
      I want to add that I hope to see this feature in cheaper monitors too (like 144 or 240Hz monitors) as RLA is about measuring how much delay you experience in games and not testing other equipment.

    Hmm this isnt' measuring real photon lag. This is measuring input lag inside of software and not the time between click and photon exit. This test gives the monitor makers an ability to fudge the numbers slightly.
    A real test is a photon sensor with a usb output to plug into your computer, or slow usb hub that you actually use for your mouse etc..

    • @BattleNonSense
      @BattleNonSense  Před 3 lety +1

      Using a 3080 for 1080p gaming has the "pro" that you will always be CPU bound and so never get the latency increase caused when GPU bound.
      czcams.com/video/QzmoLJwS6eQ/video.html
      On the other hand you payed extra for more GPU power that you cannot use.
      That is ofc. assuming that you do not crank up the render scale setting which causes the game to render at a higher resolution and then downscale the image to 1080p for better image quality.
      That way you can even max out a 3080 at "1080p" and get GPU bound.

      @@BattleNonSense Not sure what they said about it but that bug is definitely back. The game overall looks terrible as if they decreased the render resolution and colors look darker and stale. Also a quick question, since I am on 1440p and I am always GPU bound its best for me to use "Enabled" instead of Boost right? I use Gsync with Vysnc and Reflex auto caps me at 138 fps

    Pretty cool that destiny 2 is gonna support reflex... but at the same time it kind of feels pretty weird to add the support for somethibg to lower system latency slightly when latency to their servers is basicly a bad joke... packet loss and stability issues is the norm with ai often teleporting a couple of meters...

Mouse latency is irrelevant all good gaming mice are 100 hz polling rate anyway. plus there is zero way i can change my mouse. There is only one mouse in the world thats pefect for left handed me (hence i bought a bunch for the coming decade) so i dont really care as i cant chanage my mouse even if its 20ms.
    I dont want a stupidly overprised monitor or a crappy piece of software on my gaming rig (geforce experience).

    I know you already tested Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019), but can you do it again - but this time, on the PS4 Pro w/ it's stock HDD?
    Activi$ion has a patent for Score/Skill Based Matchmaking (SBMM) & Player Based Matchmaking (PBMM) on which they block players (player's who don't buy microtransactions 'MTX') from getting on higher hertz servers. They constantly place me in those 12hz "Listen" servers ibstead of 60hz servers. During these play sessions, I will constantly encounter that annoying "Packet Burst" network icon (mid left of screen) plus many others. It will pop up when encounter enemy players, plus it hust happens regularly every few seconds. When this pops up, I also get frame freeze ups & frame skips.
    I constantly run into "Shoot first, die first" gunfights (I shoot first, accurately, but die after they shoot second & insta kill me in a couple of frames)
    Also, the peekers advantage is fucking ridiculous at ever corner or object, whether that be strafing or headglitching. They'll shoot me before thrir even on my screen! The broken camera angles play into this aspect as well.
    Please please PLEASE! Battlenonsense, test this! It's been driving me insane! CODtuber shills like Driftor & the like don't touch upon this issue, since they are paid by Activi$ion!
    This bullshit doesn't happen in any other game mind you! DICE had these problems in BF4 but fixed those back in like 2014 or 2015!
    **To see what I mean by the peekers advantage, just watch youtuver: OvenBakedMuffin 's videos on Black Ops 2

      How would secretly putting players who buy microtransactions on better servers make Activision money? Isn't that something they would want to advertise so more people would buy stuff?
      Your conspiracy theory is like the flip side of the doomsday machine in Doctor Strangelove. What's the point of having it if its a secret?
      Also, you can test this yourself, there's already several videos on this channel about how to analyze game server traffic.
