  • What happens when you take two portrait photographers who are used to taking photos on digital cameras and stick film cameras in their hands? In this video, you'll see Manny Ortiz and I take 2 classic Minolta cameras (which may or may not work right) around the Opryland Resort in pretty terrible lighting conditions and attempt to make some magic!
    This was our first time photographing a model exclusively using film, and it was quite a learning experience! The Minolta XG-A and SRT201 were a lot of fun to use and in the coming weeks, you'll be seeing a lot more film photography coming to my channel. While there weren't any sponsors on today's video, I would love it if you would leave a like on this video, subscribe, and let me know what kind of film photography content you'd like to see from me!

    The cameras used in this video were purchased from a thrift store or through Goodwill online. Vintage film cameras like this are pretty easy to find and don't cost very much. If you're wanting to get into photography and have a limited budget consider checking out a camera like this on eBay or your local antique/thrift stores!

    Wow. I guess I’ve shot film for so long, I’ve been taking for granted all the stuff I’m seeing you guys struggle with in this video. At this point it’s pretty second nature for me, but I can see how somebody who’s never shot film before would struggle so much with light levels and how to do basic exposure when you can’t change the ISO or see what it’s going to look like. Manny was heading the right direction with the flash, but a basic handheld incident light meter and getting creative with coming up with ways to hold the camera steady, or using the ambient as fill and the flash as the key would have done wonders. Add a basic trigger system so you can get the flash off the camera (or use the on camera flash to trigger another light), and it then boils down to just metering the ambient and going from there. It all works the same as digital, you just have to visualize it first, then make the image, not shoot or adjust settings until you like what you see.

    It looks as though you had fun, experienced frustration, found confusion, discovered gratification, and learned something new. I find that I go through this emotional rollercoaster each time I go through a roll - and yet still come back again and again. Shooting on a film camera FORCES me to slow down, to study my composure, and to use what I know about light. Most of us have learned the exposure triangle, but with digital it was always a reference as to what setting we want to leisurely adjust to get the shot. In film, without being able to adjust the iso/asa, you have to think outside the box and really understand the formula.
    Kudos to you both for going through the experience of shooting film. Even through the challenges - all three of you showed that patience and creativity pays off. That's a reminder we can all benefit from. 😀

      @@MiguelQuilesJr I'm like a kid finding all his old toys in the closet. I picked up a ton of film kit between 2004 and 2010. I went all in on digital in 2011. Mounted what glass i could on digital and kinda just forgot about the film cameras. I started shooting film again in january. First with a nikon f100 and an old 85mm d lens. And now i'm buying 4x5 xray film because it's cheap.

    I have to say I truly enjoyed this post. I started my photography journey as a 14 year old in 1981 in the darkroom. I also got my first SLR that year, a Canon AE-1 and I shot with it until my gear was stolen in 1999, never had a single mechanical issue with the camera. After my gear was stolen I start to delve into digital and I still shoot digital today but about 6 years ago I went back to shooting and developing film and I immediately realised how much I missed analogue, so today much of my photography is analogue using a Pentax 6X7 principally but I also have a great collection of Nikon 35mm film cameras.
    Well done gentlemen.

    Most turned out very well, great, even. And now we know ISO 800 is fine for most indoor situations of non-moving subjects that has a variety of specular light available. Great location.
    I don't understand Manny's comment about flying blind. Every time he hits the shutter on his Sony it's still just exposure triangle, composition, and focus, all of which are fairly easy for portraiture. Bracket if you must, and pay for more film, but the *methodology* is the same.

    Everybody has become so reliant on auto this and auto that and no one knows how to handle manual anything. Manual focus what's that? Setting exposure what's that? Driving a stick shift car...what's that? It's always good to know just for the sake of knowledge how to do things using your own two hands and your brain power. Technology is nice and convenient but it also can be a crutch. By the way she was saying "Slavic squat" but we all know it is really "Gopnik Squat".

    I'm a little late watching this. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you guys. I learned on film back in the 80's My first camera was the Minolta Maxxum. It was the dawn of cutting edge, and I couldn't wait to put rolls through that camera. I still do to this day in addition to my digital work flow.

  • @aljawad
    @aljawad Před rokem +1

    Nice shots - and well-exposed too. Done of them are a bit out of focus, but that’s understandable. The Lomography film is ISO (or ASA as we used to say) 800 - which is a bit unusual for colour negative films as I recall we only had speeds of 100,200,400 and then jump to 1000 (slide films like Kodachrome had 25 and 64 speeds - even slower in earlier decades). Perhaps the film is meant for cinema work?
    Minolta was a great brand! In fact, until the 1990s Leica SLR cameras were made by Minolta. Back in the early 1980s I went for a system based on the Minolta X-700, mainly because of its light weight compared with my Nikon gear, only to discover the superiority of the optics and metering functionality (until I got the phenomenal Nikon FA which featured an early matrix meter).

    First of all, I applaud both of you for at least trying to shoot film. I think both of you got some great photos although not all. Unfortunately your lighting conditions were pretty poor. You wouldn’t have shot in this lighting even with a digital camera and at 1/15 you could only pray.
    I think the shots that did come out good have a tremendous amount of Character and have that organic look and feel to them. Unfortunately today's digital photographers are stuck in how many Megapixels they can get, Pixel peeping to 400% and fail to see the artistic value of film. Don’t get me wrong, both of you are Amazing photographers, but Digital photographers that are trying film for the first time.
