  • Hey pyros, we are a father and son team who shoot a big 4th of July show every year in PA. As fireworks are the devil where we're from and we have terrible neighbors who call the cops, a family friend of ours was kind enough to allow us to use his property in PA to shoot our show. This is our first video ever being posted to CZcams so please pardon the video quality and any talking during the show. We hope to use a better camera next year to make a higher quality video. This show was fired using the maximum number of ignite modules (6) that can be currently connected to one phone. The entire show was designed beforehand using Ignite Show Designer so all we had to do was hit one button on our phone and the entire show fired as scripted.
The show consisted of a left, center and right section spaced about 25 feet apart. Each section contained 2 modules for a total of 36 cues per section and 108 cues in all. The bulk of the mortars were fired at the halfway point of the show at 19:44. With the use of some breakout boards we had a total of 116 cakes out in the field and approximately 144 mortars. The cakes were connected to the modules using MJG firewire initiators with visco shroud. The fuse is inserted into a plastic tube at the end of the igniter and taped to the cake.
Unfortunately, we had about 10 cakes that didn't fire due to the fuse not igniting. While the modules worked flawlessly and fired the initiators, the fire was not enough to light some stubborn fuses. This was a major bummer because we had gaps in the show where a cake should have been firing but wasn't. I edited the video to take out any gaps caused by a cake not firing as scheduled. We learned after the fact that it's a good idea to cut the fuse at an angle to expose more of the powder to increase the chance of the fuse lighting. Next year we will likely poke the cakes and use regular firewire initiators to leave no room for doubt.
    Enjoy the show!

Wonderful show! I really do love my Ignite system. The additional availability of breakout boards really adds depth and texture to what you can do with the system. I've tried using the MJG visco shroud igniters but have found them less satisfactory than the talons. My issue is that the visco fuse is often too skinny to fit securely in the shroud and the resulting need to tape is cumbersome and not fool-proof. Sometimes, the "push" of the MJG igniter going off blows the fuse out of the shroud w/o igniting it - even if it's been taped. Conversely, I've had no issues with firing 5 talon igniters off a breakout board. In any case, thanks again for the show.

Thanks for watching! For this year’s show we poked the cakes and used MJG Firewire initiators. We had a much higher success rate with nearly all of our 150 cakes going off except for a few of the smaller ones which we had some difficulty poking. The video for this year is up now!

Disclaimer: No corn was harmed in the making of this video. In fact, I heard it made terrific “pop” corn.
