- Nothing beats a good story behind a car, and we've managed to track down some of the history of my Porsche 914/4! Let's head up to @yorkshirecarrestoration in the 296 GTS to start stripping out the interior, try to start it up for the first time, and figure out the Shmeemobile's history!

I've recently bought a 1973 Porsche 914/4 2.0 that's in a confusing state; some things have been restored but plenty more needs work to be done. That's why we're up with Steve and Ryan who have been cracking on with stripping things down to get to the bottom of more of the issues. With plenty of rust found; it's been nicknamed Project Patches - but that's why it is in good hands for the fixes. Today's plan is to get it more pulled apart, taking out the interior, and then giving it a go to get this thing started up!
However, I bought it completely blind, with no clue of the history and where this car had been before. However, thanks to the world of social media, we know have contact with previous owners, know a bit more about where it was, what work was done, when it came to the UK and more. Having been able to find out some of this makes it even more exciting to undertake this project! I wonder if we'll find out any former owners in the US from before...

This is awesome to watch. This type of content is more interesting than all the videos talking about how great the new Ferrari or Lamborghini is. There is always a lot to learn when restoring old cars and learning the past of the cars.
We all know the story of this car is going to end up in Vin Wiki at some point. Love these kind of videos!

Keep the wheels as they are Fuch alloy rims that came on a 1973 2.0 litre, very rare and hard to find now. Did you notice how lightweight they are.
Wow, what an absolutely fantastic video! That Porsche has a lot of traveling miles on it, North America, Canada, and now setting there with you getting a complete and well-deserved makeover. Love the Blue color of the car! Really surprised when it turned over just as you were!

Enjoying this already. My .02 is that the original side indicators are a story piece. No, you dont need to keep them, but that car's made quite a journey to end up where it is now and little quirks are fun to talk about with cars like this one.

You should get that car to a Porsche restoration specialist. Your guys will do the job but they’re gonna be learning and making mistakes at your expense

I love this little car! I keep thinking some EFI might do wonders for this car. Just wonder if it being related to the beetle engine if it has the same issues with a hot no.2 cylinder that plagued those beetle engines. Cant wait to see this play out!
Hey Schmee, quick note for you. You may have tons of options in England but Restoration Design in Ontario Canada fabricates all of the panels you will need for the 914. Their quality is fantastic and will likely be a lot less expensive than trying to fabricate individual parts. Love the video.

After watching Harry’s Garage I think I’m less shocked at how far a car can go but still be brought back to life and how people with the right skill will get it back spot on. Guy in the next street to us has one and think it needs a lot of work. Just new Oil going round that engine will do it a world of good. 👍

In 1975, I purchased a 1970 914-4. Such a fun car but the rust eventually led to its death as a rear spring broke through the rusty frame mount. At the time I was living in FL but the car had been in Maryland where salty winter roads presented issues on cars in general. This vid makes me wonder if these cars are especially susceptible to rust problems.
Battery overcharged ate paint then rusted if driven in tge winter and not regularly washed will collect salt

I was watching these two gentlemen showing the other several cars they've been working on and now the initial touches on the Porsche. They seem to have ENCYCLOPEDIC knowledge about cars.
I’ve done a few bits with these guys really top lads still wanting to get a few more bits done in near future

Drill the big Canadian coin and have it on the key ring. Plus, deffo get rid of the North American marker lights on the flanks. They are gopping.
296 oddly seems like a better option than the SF90 for many reasons. Do you prefer one over the other?
