    M sets really do need an upgrade, I love the aesthetic of the train but just hate to know that it also provides the most inconvenience. Used to be my favourite train until I ran into these problems when I rode on them, now the Oscar H sets are my favourite.

    2:59 That's what I'm also hoping for the M sets! M sets really should get a technology upgrade alongside the Hunters. It has been implemented on Waratah Series 2 B sets and a few Oscar H sets, so why not the M sets & Hunters too?

      That is fairly true - M sets definitely take the lead for general comfort and just that it adds variety to the train. Of course, Waratahs would be better than M sets in its actual reliability.

    I like the M sets, I was born in 94 so M sets were the fancy modern train when I was growing up, Sure they have reliability issues but I still think they were an improvement over the Tangaras. They are like the middle child of our train network, Not as famous as their older Tangara sibling and they aren't the new kid on the block that is now the Waratahs.

    The TOS (train operating system) runs on windows NT, originally the French edition, but later English edition. This is because Austrom was the provider. The cctv runs on XP as it was retro fitted in the mid 2010’s and Cityrail / Sydney Trains had a licence with Microsoft for XP for all computers at that stage.
    The main reason for not upgrading is as they are standalone units and have had most bugs sorted, and with little reason to upgrade as that would require hardware upgrades and solving software conflicting with a new OS.
    Similar reason why the Tangara’s are still running DOS, as it’s just not viable to upgrade.

  • @ForTheBirbs
    @ForTheBirbs Před měsícem +4

    Based on the timelines, Windows NT 4 would be the likely OS as released in 1996, through to Windows 2000 in 1999. Then came Windows XP, crappy Vista and Windows 7. This is ignoring the consumer Win 95, 98, ME. Cheers

    One more comment on trains still using Windows 7 - you'd be surprised how many back end systems still use old OSs. They operate on isolated VPNs with no 'internet' connection. There's still a massive supply industry for industrial controller PCs. All manner of stuff. A simple one is the advertising displays at bus stops or even the signals at rail and Metro stations. Cathode Ray Dude had a series called "little guys" on this tech. Cheers

  • @alastair_king
    @alastair_king Před měsícem

    The biggest problem with them in my opinion is that the dva doesn’t announce the next station until close to the next stop, and the info screens are always either displaying ‘welcome aboard’ for the entire trip or it glitches and gets stuck on a station and displays the wrong one.

    • @yangster4679

      Yeah with newer technology comes more power draw. The whole reason T4 is stuck with only T sets and a handful of H sets is due to insufficient power supply.

    - The entry to service delays aren't especially absurd. It should be considered that the Waratah's were 2-3 years late, and now the D sets are 4 or 5 years late. You can't simply say that they are crap because of that. Teething problems are also to be expected to some degree, although the M sets did have it worse than some other train types.
    - Say what you want about the computer software, but the Tangaras are gonna be worse.
    - The "power supply" argument is slightly irrelevant as to my understanding the Waratahs have similar problems with power use, hence why they aren't ever used on the T4.

    • @tsetstransport
      @tsetstransport  Před měsícem

      Incorrect on a few points there - you somehow forgot to mention on how I spoke of the trains actually being withdrawn after entering service following several issues.
      Also wrong on the Waratah on the T4 part as they have ran on the line many times before, primarily during industrial action (this includes M sets too), not to mention that a B set was spotted testing on the ESR a few years back.
      To me, I find most of your points misleading..?

    • @nathandunnn
      @nathandunnn Před měsícem

      @@tsetstransport Sorry, I should have clarified. M sets, as well as B and A sets, have run on the T4, There was one particular day (I think in 2022) where a majority of Hurstville services were M sets. So you can say all 3 types have only run very occasionally on the T4 and only as far as Hurstville, occasionally further in testing (eg. the Waratahs being at MMC for a very short time in 2013, and a couple of M set runs (not in service) which i believe were in 2016). M sets did do a few timetabled runs on the T4 around 2007-2010 ish from what I have heard. Still the power supply issues do apply to all 3 trains, and normally when they have made trips on the T4 it is a limited percentage of services relative to the usual Tangaras.
      You are right about the withdrawals, but I would hesitate to say that teething problems impact trains success or failure throughout their full service lives. There performance later on (below average but definitely could be worse) is a better indicator.

    They're likely running 32bit CPUs, and therefore couldn't upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 10 is going EOL in 2025, so there wouldn't be a massive advantage to upgrading.
