  • Different to what I have told around 21:00 min. we had to adjust the input level by P2 as the DSP input was overdriven. I simply didin't see the LED flashing in the bright light... :^)

This little device makes the FT817ND perform like a full sized Yaesu radio. Without it, even with mechanical filters, the 817ND start to hurt the ears after sometime listening and scanning the frequencies. But with this DSP, the voices comes up to front of the stage and it expands the sound stage like it was broadcast quality. Pretty unbelievable. Luckily, I did not do this mod as the parts are really tiny and you need a real steady hands and good soldering skills.

Nice little module but really, they ground the part number off the QFP IC. That's enough to make me not buy one. I refuse to buy products that are intentionally made unserviceable because the manufacturer grinds off part numbers. Same reason I refuse to buy a radio the manufacturer won't release a service manual for.

TRX Bench Ironically, I found that video previously and was slightly entertained that removal process of the main PCB was a hard cut to the removed board. Thanks for digging it up regardless. Overall after figuring out the ribbon cable, I felt a lot more confident tackling this somewhat complex mod seeing your very helpful video. It all went well and I love the new bhi DSP filter personally. Thank you again. One more question, I have spent some serious search time and cannot believe I cannot find that front BNC 50 ohm dummy load resistor you have. I have a simple silver one that looks like a modified BNC connector. Just for the pride of aesthetics and slightly more rugged benefits on the radio, can you share where you found that all black rugged looking dummy load? Thank you again.

hi, this is an interesting item, have you also seen the nedsp1901-kbd that they have out now, and fitting it to an 818 would also be interesting.. i currently have the aftermarket yaesu ssb filter fitted and it does work, altho not so well at times.. i presume this filter / dps would be better.. also sota beams has one out to.. the laserbeam-817, they seem to fit in the same way but there is no adjustment its automatic and also works with optional filter fitted also.. seems to be a mine field and to know what to go for.. thanx for the videos.. de m0yyo

To be honest I wonder if it really is worth the effort? Yes you could hear the increase in signal to noise ratio (not dramatic though), but that is a low power Tx - so yes, you will be hearing a few more signals but would still not be able to work them well. Apologies if that is not technically correct!

You cannot get these anymore I would have upgraded my radio but it seems that the FT817 is now passe but I find that it is a convenient size for SOTA, even if some claim it is not sensitive enough. I have one amateur in Canberra who has done 5000 SOTA contacts with his radio and VK3EYE should have totally demolished his years ago and yet he still makes contacts into the US and Europe. A DSP would be a worthwhile addition to this radio.

It would be nice to see this DSP swept with a frequency generator (like from 100Hz to 5kHz) and see how the filter attenuates and discriminates on an oscilloscope. Or even better, put one scope probe on the unfiltered input signal and another on the filtered output signal, and then put voice through it (like those images in the manual) to see the difference in signal to noise.
