The 1998 action movie starring Kurt Russel, Soldier quickly gained and maintained the animosity of critics worldwide. Decker Shado takes a look at this widely hated movie to see if it truly is one of the most detestable films ever created, or if there is more than a little silver lining to this Warner Brothers presentation.
"Wait, so big tough soldier-man is afraid of this little lady?"
First, I'll give the quote I always use:
"Of course I'm afraid of women; I'm afraid of anybody who can hurt me"
Now the actual cause:
Todd lives in a world where screwing up, doing the wrong thing, not doing the right thing, gets you killed.
He's in a situation where he does not know the rules. And he's lived his whole life following rules.
That's why he's afraid.
It's amazing how common it is for returning combat vets to be afraid of day to day life, because they don't know how to do anything without orders anymore. This popcorn flick has a lot of psychological archetypes done very well.
Plus you have to remember they were raised from birth in very strict even cruel conditions. The reason they are sitting on their beds is their lives are so regimented if they arent training or on a mission they were raised to literally sit their and wait. Probably the only interaction hes ever had is pain and death so yea ID imagine something like affection scares the hell out of him because he just does not know how to process it.

I actually think Gary's character is really good. He's forced to conduct an operation he doesn't even want but, when his men start dying, he wants them to fight in a way that'd reduce their losses. He's a very complex and realistic commander character.
Totally but I always hated how he didnt stand up for his kid soldiers he brought up nd there was no story arc to redeem him
I've always loved thismovie: No one-liners, no cheesy moments, no love interest for the hero. Straight up cuasi robotic trained SOLDIER. Battles a little over the top, but the story is awesome.

I like how there is no 1 liner for the victory kill. The look on his face just tells it. He gets no pleasure out of kill him, he's a soldier, he was an enemy, he wants to protect the villagers. He doesn't know any other way to solve the problem... sorrow too strong a word, but he gets no satisfaction from it. It just something he had to do regardless.
I love that there was no one liner when Todd killed Kane, as someone once said.

I like that most of the Todd's character is nonverbal, really wanna see this movie now as it's rare to see a movie so focused on visual hints rather than telling us everything

Thanks for doing this movie justice, fun fact many real soldiers (my father was spec ops) use this movie as a way to cope and return back to civilian life.
a big thing many miss is that the kid character is a symbol, not a traditional character.
the kid represents Tod as a child.
my dad cries everytime he watches this because he was a born soldier, he had a rough life and all he knew was combat. It took him until he was almost 60 before he regained some emotion, thanks to countless viewings of this film. its a peice of art, that captures the mind of "spartan" like soldiers who are rather common in the armed forces, especially in the rangers and seals..... much like my father, who was both of those.
Furthermore, its a delightfully accurate psych analysis of career combat veterans, all to the tune of a sci fi theme. I just wish more critics saw the art and imagery for more than the face value. At least you recognise its awesomeness. Next time you do a classic Decker, Mind putting some artistic goggles on? you tend to miss the symbolism of films and focus on the superficial. Art is about Symbolism... NOT TECHNIQUE, I know you know this, but why not point it out next time?

How the hell did anyone think this was even in the running for the worst movie ever?
I've also seen Beastmaster listed as one of the worst movies ever. Fuck that! Beastmaster is awesome!

@@Thundarr100 Beastmaster is a fun watch, but this one is on a different level, especially in the final fight scene.
Main issue is that the guys behind this film see this as a part of the Blade Runner universe. The new soldiers are implied to be replicants, there is mention of war at Tannhauser Gate and if looked at closely, there's a LAPD spinner in the junk. But besides those very small references, there is nothing tying it to Blade Runner.
Soldier is one of my favorite Kurt Russell movies. It's a classic action movie along the lines of Commando and Rambo. It's just a great film.
In the view of Todd's profile including his list of fought wars, if you stop in the right place (very before the computer screen fades away), you can see the six-attributes (top left of screen) of Dungeon and Dragons :)

Thanks for doing "Soldier" some justice here Decker! I've been a fan since i saw this film years ago. Never knew it bombed so bad at the box office, but that does explain why I hear so little about it these days.
This is the perfect example of a movie being shat upon by unprofessional movie critics. This is why you should not trust the critics and look towards actual reviewers who do their job at paying attention to every detail. Look at what happened to ghost busters 2016, the critics loved it but the box office disproves it other wise considering it bombed financially which probably had Sony pretty pissed off over Amy pascal for allowing this to even happen. After all, it's her fault for how it turned out. People keep saying its Paul Feigs fault but he was refusing to do it until Amy pulled off a dick move and got that other director kicked out of it, then tells Paul you can do whatever you want with it which caused Paul to give into temptation. So yeah Amy ruined that movie trying too hard to force her moral beliefs into that movie. Most of those "legit' critics are looked at being always right, but nine times out of ten they do it because they were bribed. This is why I go to CZcams to see people like angry joe or decker shado who gives his honest opinion, often being what people like me would agree with.
Fun fact: The first day of filming, Kurt Russel received an injury to his foot/ankle. The shooting schedule then had to be re-ordered to account for his injury. They filmed all the scenes of him sitting, then all the ones of him standing, then walking and finally running.
I came back to this review after re-watching Soldier for the 4th time (I think the film is criminally underrated). I have no issues with this film other than not knowing anything about the outside world the film is set in.
We see that children are literally selectively breeded and molded into soldiers for the duration of their childhood. Weakness results in death. Then, years later, "Bio-Soldiers" are created in laboratories and sent into battle as some kind of ultimate warriors. All of this happens in a universe where space travel is commonplace. But at no point do we ever get to see what kind of society would condone and even financially support such behavior from its military. We don't even know what kind of power the military itself has. Is it under the control of a government? If so, what kind of government? Or has the military taken the place of government? What kind of enemies do they normally face that they would require bombs that can destroy large portions of entire planets?
And yes, I do realize that the film is about Todd's journey into his own humanity (or at least whatever humanity can be salvaged), but the questions aren't going to go away. Even with other sci-fi films, good or bad, you still have an idea of the sort of universe you're in, the type of society that everything takes place in, etc. But Soldier leaves too many unanswered questions.
I still LOVE the movie, I just hate not knowing, and I wish the film had done a lot better because then there could have been universe-expanding sequels.

That was literally the FIRST time in his life that he actually felt what a hug was like and he didn't know what to actually think about something as foreign to him as kindness
Moral conflicts aside, Kurt's character probably wouldn't have been taught to speak unless spoken to or ordered to speak. Being a chatter box probably isn't a normal trait valued by those military dickheads. Keep this as inhuman as possible so they don't have to grow a conscience is the theory they were going for, and it works - but it's never pretty. His silent character works because this wasn't a comedy. It wasn't even an action flick imo. It was more a post-apocalyptic movie where an outsider must find his way in a new world. And the soldiers who were cast aside really are outsiders to humanity. They were treated like humans and real human interaction for them is a foreign subject that they need a crash course on. It'd make sense that a mute child would gravitate to someone that is like them. Plus the child adds a sense of humanity to the 'big badass emotionless soldier man' character. Over all this movie was well made for being what it was about. The world killing bomb should have been less weird looking, but eh..that's nitpicking.
Exactly. Their childhoods were nothing but education amd conditioning for war. The scenes where they are sitting on their beds at attention. Thats their lives. Missions, training, eat, sleep, and whatever else ypur superiors give you permission for. They killed a child recruit simply for not keeping up. Its obvious in how todd only responds with short and minimalistic answers as possible that theres almost no real humanity in him at this point and it would pribably take YEARS for him to develope real social skills and things like that. Juat the fact that something as simple as a hug is so foreign to him that it makes him tremble should tell everyone how brutal these mens lives were

I actually thought it fit the someone simple tone of the moment.
28:57 I would have accepted Todd telling Caine, "You are obsolete!", calling back to when Dolphy called Todd and his troop obsolete; in a way proving he is still better than the new generation, that the classic hasn't gone out of style.

@Rusty Kinks Well, when I suggested the line, it was like I said more of a callback or repeat of Dolphy's words, rather than attached to a sense of revenge. But Todd isn't merely an automaton. He's been conditioned to never show emotion except that which will serve him in battle: fear and discipline. Feelings like sadness such as earlier when he was kicked out elude his comprehension because he's never lived as an ordinary human, but Todd is human. So it's understandable he might also feel anger but doesn't understand it, yet he still says lines like, "I'm gonna kill them all, sir" when they killed Mace and threatened more of his new friends. Still, I see your point.
@@sebastianemond5313 to be fair that was less of a one liner and him just answering her question. I like that todd kills Cain and says nothing, barely even looks at him. Thats true to his character of being raised to be a machine.
Unfortunately, I haven't yet seen Green Lantern, so I can't really form an opinion on it. Also, I'm unfamiliar with the comics, so I probably wouldn't be the best judge - but as it stands, with the reputation of being utterly terrible, I'm guessing I'll find something to enjoy with it.
A lot of things seem to get the treatment of "it's the (best/worst) thing EVER!" which is generally.. inaccurate. Most things tend to fall in the middle, which is why it's called an average. Oh well.
I watched the movie as a kid with my dad, we both found it great and I have it in my collection and still enjoy watching it.
Destroy these critics that name it the worst, I’ve seen movies far worse than this and found them at least watchable.

It also went against the grain in some ways.
Paul Anderson directed this film and he said he was tired of seeing bad guys being tall 6'4 clean cut Aryan men. In the source material, Cain was actually a Russian archetype.
They cast Jason Scott Lee instead.
They also wanted this film to loosely be based on the BladeRunner universe without being a sequel or prequel. Just coexisting. Something most franchises at the time weren't doing.
The song at 18:22 is Night Ride Across the Caucasus by Loreena McKennitt and I can't believe it was on this OST! I love her work and The Book if Secrets is one if my favorite albums.
I agree with you on this one DS. and I think my favourite part is when todd uses his body language to outwit the other guy at then end and use the spinning blade of death, rather than fight over the farm tool
The Vuvazela explosion had me dying laughing. It took me like 10 seconds to figure out wtf that noise was before I remembered the earlier reference. Great set up and pay off. 🤣
Oh man!!! I found this movie years ago at a blockbuster. I was blown away. Kurt Russel, Jason Isaacs,, Gary Busey, and Sean Pertwee. It's an Allstars cast of both B-Movie and A list actors. Sean is one of my favs. Ever since my mom used to put on Cadfeal back in the day. Derek Jacobi is epic.

Dude, yes! I fucking LOVED this movie. Was it perfect? No. But was it Kurt Russell in one of his finest films? Yes, indeedy. I liked how they stuck with him as a man of very few, well chosen words. One of my favorite scenes is the "I'm going to kill them all, sir." scene. It completely conveyed his intent and you know he is not fucking around. In my opinion your review is one of the best I've seen of it. Thank you for actually paying attention to the movie and appreciating it for what it was.

Alright first off that is an AKU-94 bullpup variation with all sorts of sci-fi embellishments. Secondly assault rifles can have either 20-30 round magazines, if not the use of a drum if they can carry it.
This movie is amazing why on Earth or any other far away planet give this movie a bad review, you are right Decker whoever gave this movie such bad reviews were talking out of their arse.

This is especially true when one has seen movies like “Manos,
the Hands of Fate”, “Glen or Glenda”, or Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas”! And
I’ve seen worse movies than even those! I actually enjoyed “Soldier” in spite of

I realize this review is a few years old, but I'm pretty sure this was when I seriously started following you--You and I felt much the same way about this movie while all of my other friends were lambasting it (half of which hadn't even seen it themselves at the time.)
This comment is a few years old lol, but yeah, I dont even factor in reviews to determine what movies or games I watch or play.
I remember seeing this the start of this movie about half a decade ago and never saw the rest of it. Only now do I actually know about it when I was researching an army in the dystopian sci-fi fantasy universe warhammer 40k. Specifically the death Korps of Krieg (yes the Planet's name literally means War in German) since apparently most of the population is similar to the super soldiers in this movie.
This is a good movie. I always enjoy Kurt Russell, no matter what he's in. My Pops even enjoys this movie. ;D

I loved this film and nice to find another person who both likes this film and is willing to defends it. While not perfect I find that Soldier is some what an under-rated classic and Curt Russel is at his best, great review as always Decker.
Loved IT! But throwing away metal, tires, makes no sence It would be recycled and rafined by need, the should off been dropped onto a destroyd Earth-witch the plane carrier woul'd make sence, not just have It in cause you could. And C. Russel, might be stranded as they get hitt while criofrozen, gets a chance for a new-shitty, but a new life, and a crew is send to check out WTF happend, maybe throw in a new species, meteor fractions, another ship surcling earth, etc.
This is my mother's favorite movie as well. She was of the opinion it was Kurt Russel's finest performance, able to convey so much with the slightest change in facial expressions.
I liked the vuvuzela touch at the end. Took me a while to get from "wtf is that sound" to "oh I see what you did there".

I remember watching this movie when I was a kid with my dad. I STILL remember it quite well decades later because it was a cool action flick with an interesting straight-laced take on its protagonist. Did people just not watch the movie, or even try to follow its very simple plot points?

Thank you! Saw this movie in theaters when it came out and thought Kurt did a phenomenal job, with so little dialogue. It is sadly unappreciated and it is refreshing to find someone who can see its merits.
I think what Todd is "affraid" of are the emotions or perhaps even the sensing of certain parts of him when this ridiculously hot woman hugs him... Basically Todd is 30-40 (something( years old teenager when it comes to social interraction especially with females = His natural equipment is trying to tell him something he doesn't know how to handle... LOL
Compared to what comes out of Hollywood nowadays mostly this movie should be on the friggin A - list.
But I know today never to trust them so called "critics" = They give often sterling reviews to movies that clearly don't deserve it (Cough cough TFA TLJ cough) and trash movies that are actually inovative...
Yea its mostly hes NEVER experienced anything other than fear pain and discipline. They are litterally raised from birth to have no feelings, no emotions, to follow orders etc. Now hes being shown kondness, compassion, confussion, curiousity, arousal. Its overwhelming and hes trying to maintain his composure. Plus the fact thats probably the first time in 40 years hes recieved anything remotely resembling actual care. The only physical touch hes probably ever received is fighting, punishment, and medical attention.

Couple of things. 1)The planet killer was modeled after an actual bomb. The "soccer ball" shape makes the implosion of a fission-fusion thermonuclear device possible, as opposed to the less efficient, larger, and generally wasteful gun type device. The issue that I see, is that the device would have been some variation of explosive(the soccer ball) a sphere of fissionable material, and a core made of another material that, when crushed causes a runaway chain reaction that makes the big boom. The issue being that in actual devices the housing is shielded so people nearby do not die of radiation poisoning long before the device is triggered. It could be that the explosives are coated in some unobtainium from the future that acts as a shield. The other issue with the device is HOW it works. Destroying a planet is pretty hard. A surface level detonation usually will not cut it, no matter how large, with the exception being a atmospheric bomb. In short, the bomb creates so much heat as to ignite the air, which then scorches the planet. Still, the planet would still be there, just crispy.
2) "But for some reason the vets all look to Todd as the new leader". No. The vets all look to Todd as their old leader. Pretty sure that Todd was never officially relieved of command, as such he is still THEIR leader, as that is what they were trained to recognize. So you have the civvies that do not recognize them as soldiers, and their old CO that gives them purpose. Tough call.
I write sci-fi as a hobby (I suck, that's why it's a hobby) and I am a military veteran. I thought the evolution of Sgt Todd was spot on and believable...I would love to see a remake maybe involving a military advisor for more realism. I also think it was the victim of bad promotion as it seems the better reviews come from people who never saw the trailers...this is not an action film but it does engage the audience and Russell's performance was great...
Also, Kurt is not too well-liked by many of the Hollyweird elite I mean he has been in a monogamous relationship with Goldie Hawn for like 40 years or more. 2nd amendment NRA conservative at most or a libertarian at least and believes in good family values. and lastly, he is Kurt Russell.

The biggest impact of soldier is this. Soldier+Starship Troopers film heavily influenced the halo game which in tern defined a gaming generation.....and in hindsight makes those films even more important :p
30:58 many polyesters don't absorb liquid as they are made of plastic. The pants shown here appear to be polyester, I would expect next to no absorption properties therefore that man's piss would easily have made it to the floor. Anything else and we'd see absorption at all, but even the scene shows it in contact with the fabric. This is polyester and behaves like polyester. Normal.

That beginning reminds me of the Spartans from Halo. And the rest really doesn't do anything to take away from that comparison.
And yeah, I loved the fuck out of this movie.
TrueMetis I agree. Though, there is one difference; the Spartans were taught to look out for each other, so they worked better as a team. Whereas the soldiers here are pretty detached
If you read the Halo novels....the “Soldier” training is virtually identical to the “Spartan training”, and both were directly inspired by the actual “training from birth” regime used by the actual Spartans of Ancient Greece.
7:20 most assault rifles in 2012 had 30 round magazines(not 20 round clips) - you might be referring to battle rifles which usually have 20 rd mags - other than that great review decker, easily in my top 5 favorite one man army movies
An absolute masterpiece. Also... you only give one liners to bad guys. He wasn’t technically a bad guy...just another soldier that was following orders.

I am five years late with this, but I am with Decker on this one. This movie was great and the reviews he read off didn't seem to know what the hell they were talking about. This is a good example of don't judge a book by the cover. You don't know if you will like it until you see it, don't go with other people say.

Glad to see that your weapons terminology has improved over the years. Most military carbines have 30 round magazines NOT "20 shot clips".
One of the thing this movie shown is that a soldier who been in heavy fighting the way that russel character had been would have trouble finding life normal. I like the scene that during the party it show he inability to connect. He reaction to being touch isn't that uncommon to people that have to react without hesitation. A lot of these things is done great with show and there very little tell.
I've always loved this movie. I don't know why so many have a negative opinion of it. Sure, it's not perfect, but I've always felt it had good merits behind it, and was a lot deeper and more cerebral than most action flicks. FYI: the rifles the Soldiers use were Kalashnikov AKMs dressed up in a futuristic shell, and they typically have magazines with a thirty round capacity. It was also fun to see some good old Nerf N-Strike blasters.
Movie credits always sucks at understand a good movie and love talking good about very very bad movies.
I felt really bad for the specially bred soldier during than montage. He did a fantastic job and easily out preformed the other men but getting damaged in a 3v1 against trained from birth soldier and still kicking all of their asses but gets treated like shit. Damn.
The one thing they didn't test with the new soldiers was an actual combat situation. As the new soldiers may have been technically superior to the Veterans, but the Veterans had decades of combat experience. Which is nicely shown when Todd uses that experience to beat them.
Dolphy was a complete idiot, to impatient and not realizing if he had wanted his new soldiers to be the very best they should have been integrated with the Veterans. With the Veterans basically in a mentor role. Plus you don't waste valuable assets even if they aren't the new shiny anymore.
I watched this movie when it came out and I really enjoyed it, it was a good fun action movie with mostly believable characters. Kurt Russell again shows us his fantastic acting skills and overall I had fun. Yes it’s not perfect but it’s so much better than any criticism it got from the reviews. Nice one Decker for actually reviewing this movie for what it is, fun action flick with a great cast and not bad story to boot.
Poor Todd he's forced to understand all the horror his inflicted by every act of kindness he is given by the villagers
This is a great performance from Russell maybe up there with his best in my opinion and thought provoking unlike most other sci fi movies 👍
a couple of things. I agreed with you Decker I am wondering what the heck these critic must be thinking call it the worse of all time when there been a WHOLE worse movies. First the story was easy to follow and for the most part believable. Which is a plus nothing hurt a movie more for then a barrage of contrive threads that that goes no where. The only coincidence is that he show up at the same planet the new bash of soldier were being sent to mop up, but you can't have a story without it so I give it a pass. Queen of the Damn which I believe came out near the same time was a worse film as was highlander 2.

This LITERALLY was how I learned about this movie. Same story exactly, but without the critics.

I remember seeing this in theaters on a whim knowing nothing more about it than Kurt was the lead I got from billboard. I was returning with my girl from a small cos play party. Me, her and my Honda 300 went as thunder dome road demons. The amount of home made rusty steel bladed armor we were wearing made from my dads old farm implements caught the attention of more than a few of the theater security. I was a Kurt fan however and gave no fucks about their opinions of our hazardous choice of apparel and used it to push past the rent-a-cops. It was a fun night.
Soldier is actually a real good movie.
It's not a good movie, but it's an entertaining one, and it does have that 90s action movie feel. Remembering watching TV on a late Friday evening after class. Worst ever though is ridiculous. That gives bad films a bad name, they worked hard on being bad damnit.

Definitely an underrated movie. I think it was too simple for most people to follow. Not every movie needs to be an Oscar Winning, 9 Academy Award, blah blah blah. It was fun for what it was. And the main character grew and learned to deal with some of the emotions he was made to suppress as he grew up.
No one's pointed out that Decker claimed that "Assault" Rifles only use 20 round mags...., Or the fact he called the mags *clips*.
Also, those weapons are modified Lee Enfield L85s.

One of my biggest problems with it is it's not set far enough in the future for the level of technology and space travel that's depicted. They should have had the soldiers be born at least a century into the future, if not more. Instead of them being born in 1997, maybe 2197. That way 45 years later the year would be 2242, which is still 222 years into the future today in 2020.

Going against slavish popular perception and evaluating a movie without bending to consensus and on it's own merits is what a Critic should do. It's at the heart of being a critic; offering an alternate viewpoint. That having been said...allow me to agree with Decker. I was very impressed with this movie the first time I saw it. I haven't seen it since, sadly, because it never seems to be available. But it ticked a lot of boxes for me, personally.
In order to retain my individuality cards, I will disagree with Decker that Last Action Hero is good kitsch satire.

Bloody Love this Movie. I thought it was a Low Budget independent, so I forgave it for some of those shortcomings. But, it actually cost quite a Pretty Penny. Never mind, it is a damn fine romp. Cheers Decker, I agree with you again.

I liked Soldier it wasn't that bad and one of the cool things about this movie it's set in the Blade Runner universe

I agree. This movie is awesome. Not in a Citizen Kane way, but more of a, "If you've walked in the protagonist's boots," way.
The silent gesturing. The visuals. The way they are able to tell the story with nothing but what the viewer sees.
I served. I wore the uniform. There is a lot in tune with this -even though it was REALLY exaggerated in the film.
