Can dead flowers still be great macro subjects?

  • Flower photography is a popular macro subject, but dried-out flowers can be just as interesting! There is less colour, but a lot more textures and contours.

The dried flowers bring a whole other macro subject with so many cool options. Lots of cool ways to set up lighting. Thanks for your wonderful tutorial.

Those lighting arms are really come in handy, and I really love dead flowers! I photographed them in the past and I still have a bunch laying around. Maybe it’s time to revisit them again.

Can't hurt to revisit older ideas with new inspiration!

Great job with this one, Ben. It brings out SO many ideas. Textures abound!
While watching this, it seemed to bring up an idea that I would call "The 1 square foot" Challenge (or, for the EU- 'The 30 sq cm Challenge') Take a small square frame outside and shoot anything that fits inside of that frame. It could be flowers in a garden, or a section of beach with shells, grasses, etc. A small flower garden would really shine in this case but so would a dense ground area in the woods. Bonus: you might get lucky and find some tiny creatures to also capture in that small area.
But I also saw another subject idea while watching you rotate your flowers there: frozen flowers. Flowers in ice would allow the various light arm colors to shine through from all different angles. Fresh flowers in distilled water (it gives you better CLEAR ice) give an amazing amount of fine bubbles from the freezing process and those bubbles would really capture your lighting arm colors well. (I have photographed frozen roses with very nice results but I need to revisit this idea when I get my hands on your Adaptalux system!)
    Again...great video, fella!

Oh randy, you read my mind... there may already be a similar challenge in the works! As kids we used to use a 1m sq marker to count and study fauna and flora for science and geography in school. No reason that couldn't be used for macro studies too! Keep your eyes out for that in a few weeks time! As for frozen flowers, consider it added to the list of things to try!

I would attend the show but 1) I have a garden producing food that I need to conserve, 2) It is a bit late notice, and 3) I live 4,580 ish miles away.
