Ok, perhaps 'hate' is a strong word but I do kind of find myself rolling my eyes at a certain type of landscape photography. Imagine my surprise when I actually find myself giving it a try and then enjoying it!
Getting up at 4AM to get the shot never gets any easier no matter how many times you do it. When you get the shot though, it's totally worth the lost sleep and feeling like a bag of smashed crabs.
I do however suffer from 'camera rage' when my Sony camera freaks out over the slightest bit of humidity. It's not the first time this has happened but somehow I manage to resist pushing it off a cliff.
I give you some priceless tips on composition which I know you're going to love. It's all about compromise and making good decisions, which is easy at a stunning location such as this.
It's not often that I capture one banger after another but in this adventure it's 'banger central' and I'm taking you along for the ride.
Will my camera function like it's supposed to and what on earth is a ''Crumpled Rilskin'? Why did I switch back to full-frame for this shot and do you believe that I can actually pass for 30?
There's really only one way to find out.

Were you born in a leap year? Lol
The hot shoe cover on the camera should solve that issue for you. Any kind of water (including humidity) can cause that if you leave the hot shoe cover off.
Wow what a rugged marvel of technology that Sony is 😂 Hasselblad or Fuji , get in touch
Looking at you from age 72, you're still a mere pup...Happy Birthday!
Its the hotshoe cover not being in place, as already been said in the comments below. As a precaution I also put some good quality sticky tape over it, in case the cover goes missing when out and about. All hotshoe contacts are vulnerable to water/moisture damage.
Happy birthday, but Amanda has stolen your show this time. Look how patiently she waits in the background as you talk to the camera.
She's a keeper Gav. 👍
Happy 20th anniversary of your 30th birthday buddy!
hehehe cheers mate.
The vertical panorama is amazing!! Amanda looks gorgeous in the waterfall. Well done you two, you are a great team.
Maybe keep that hotshoe cover on, that message pops up when you get water in there
Maybe you should use hot shoe cover like Sony intended for weather proofing your camera?
@ 5:32 you can see the issue of water on the hot shoe, “This accessory (water) is not supported by the device and cannot be used. Please verify the compatibility with the device.” having Amanda pose really made the shot great.
"You work with what you've got don't ya?" spoken like a true landscape photographer.
As a street and doc photographer I agree 200%, because what is prior research even? I can't decisive moment that. Strangers mid stride on hideous backgrounds, made black and white because I didnt plan for better light is my bread and butter. From my perspective you did great! 😂
Beautiful photos - Beautiful Lady. You guys make a great team. Happy birthday!
Amanda is a bloody good sport Gav.Youre lucky to have her :)
Happy 30 years old birthday ;) its cool when you do 30 for 20 times. Amanda is such a sport, and amazing photos as usual
Happy birthday 🎉
Where is your hotshoe cover Gavin? It's pretty known that Sony cameras don't like water in the hotshoe.
Mads (Iversen) had a similar problem I think - you need a water tight hot shoe cover - the Sony one is terrible and humidity and moisture get under it (if you bother using it!) and cause the hot shoe elements to short, giving an error message. I think Mads bought a rubber Nikon one.
Great video - always brightens up Sundays when you upload something new!
Amanda nailed the innocent atmosphere. You guys will love this shot for the rest of your lives I’m sure!
PART OF THE REASON FOR THE MESSAGE IS THE HOT SHOE IS EXPOSED TO THE WATER, KNOW ISSUSE WITH SONY IF WATER GETES IN ON THE CONTACTS AND ERROR MESSAGES STRT TO SHOW UP. TRY TO PUT THE SHOE COVER ON AND TRY AGAIN.
same thing happend to me every time I used to go out in the rain. I 3d printed a hot shoe insert because i lost the original and I have not had an issue in the wet weather since!
I bought Sony’s 200-600 a couple years ago, and have gone from strictly landscapes, to 80% bird photography. I still go on landscspe outings, but love striving for great bird compositions too!
I love either adding people in or capturing great moments with people in Landscape shots. Awesome locations and comps!
Jesus christ those little plastic tabs that protect your hot shoe from the elements are probaby like 3 cents each. Watching all that water hit your hot shoe exposed like that gave me the heebie jeebies!
Amanda is beautiful (inside/outside), perfect for these shots. You're so lucky.
Happy birthday, Gavin. You definitely look 30+ and the nice thing is that you will stay 30+. The shots from the waterfalls are amazing!!
The shot with Amanda is juts out of this world
Hills and climbing poles...welcome to your 50's my friend! 🤣 Great shot of Amanda! Amazing location!
Your Sony Rage can be solved if you find or buy the hot shoe cover. Because of the multi-interface connector in the hot shoe, it is sensitive to water.
i noticed that aswell!
Placing a rose in the middle of an otherwise dreary composition is always a great idea! (just steer clear of the thorns)
I noticed the camera hot shoe cover was missing. One drop of water into that area could cause some shorting hence, the error message. I would always cover my hot shoe unless I am using a flash or another accessory. Another photographer has recommended the Nikon Shoe Cover BS-3. It is more protective and apparently fits into the Sony's hot shoe.
exposed hot shoe causing the rage?
I've had this error with Sony. In my case the lens did not fully seat. Lens off/Lens on and fixed. I just don't recall if it was the same lens. No waterfall, rain, or even humid air.
I'd say Amanda does know how to pose, and with a touch of joy in her expression. She also adds the only red tones in a sea of green. Great shot!
That one with Amanda at the falls is bookworthy.👌
Please put the hotshot cover in mate. You probably know that though! Great vid as usual. 👍📷
I think it’s safe to say, having all the port doors open, and no hotshoe cover, and possibly changing lenses with that moisture… any camera would have problems.
A hot shoe...a hot shoe cover my kingdom for a hot shoe cover
Happy Birthday, Gavin! Not that fifty is old but you look so much younger. I truly love your photography, and the way you walk us through your thoughts is second to none. You’ve been a wonderful teacher and I expect to learn a great deal more. I keep you, Thomas Heaton, Nick Page, and a few others on my CZcams speed dial so that I get multiple perspectives in developing my own. Thank you. God bless you and Amanda.
Amazing pic with Amanda! My thought is that landscapes with human elements like a path or bridge almost feel empty if you don’t include a human. Having a person, even a tiny person in the distance adds a bit of life. Also, on the camera issue, my Sony would do the same thing anytime I was in moist conditions. I saw a Pierre T. Lambert video where he complained of the same thing and said it’s due to the hot shoe connector being uncovered and getting even a tiny bit of moisture on it. I put a hotshoe cover on mine and it never happened again. Before I ditched it for Fuji anyway. 😂
Love the images and nothing cringeworthy about the photo with Amanda! Well done!
Amanda is a good sport to get up at stupid o’clock-no way I get up before 8am-anyone waking me up at that time of the morning does it at their peril.🙃
The waterfalls you’re at now remind me of your original work in Vancouver Island. I loved your videos from out there, and you are obviously in a special zone in that environment. We enjoy your work very much, and hope you are doing well.
Put a cover on your hot shoe on top of the camera. That should solve the problem with your camera. Excuse my English it is not my first language.
Good tip I didn't even think of that 👍
Your English is perfect and the advice correct! 😊
I think you and Amanda nailed that environmental portrait. Happy belated birthday!
Yes, I did enjoy this week's video. I think it is my favorite. You were in a beautiful location and captured some wonderful compositions. Of course, my absolute favorite was the one with Amanda reaching out into the water. That one is going to be your lifetime keeper forever. This was a fun day. 🥰 OH, and happy birthday. I can almost remember back when I was 50. I did some of my strongest outdoor trips between ages 50 and 68. Thirteen years later I'm still going but my horizons have shrunk a great deal. So, you have done some fine work up to this point, Gavin, but your best is still ahead of you.🌄 Looking forward to seeing what kind of camera you get to replace that Sony.
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 👍👌🤗
Happy Birthjday Gavin! it comes around sooo quick and we all think we are still 30! Thanks for all the laughs ! :)
What a beautiful memory at 18:58. That is not only book worthy but, cover worthy as well !! Thank you for this production and for highlighting, $ony...LOL
What are you saying?! Going dress shopping with your girl is the best thing. Where else do you get a personal fashion parade by a beautiful girl? Plus, HUGE brownie points :-)
And, that is a beautiful photo of Amanda under the waterfall. Well done.
I’ve had the same issue with my A7RV recently. It’s the hot shoe contacts. I used some nail varnish remover on a cotton bud and cleaned the contact section, and it’s resolved it… until it gets wet again 😏
Happy “30th” birthday Gavin!! 🎉 You captured some really stunning images!
Stunning capture and stunning wife ! Amanda, you are pure joy to be laughing at that hour in the morning.
I find your efforts to photograph Amanda in a way that you are not used to was great, and Amanda did an outstanding job. You may have found a new aspect to photography.
Welcome to your 50s, Gavin. Looking back from age 71 I can say, enjoy your youth.
Happy Birthday Gavin!😁🍾🎂
Edit: You song inspector Gadget, that’s awesome😂😂😂. I’m a fellow Gen X appreciating it😁
Killer episode, killer result, absolutely stunning. Best episode ever, in my view. I'm impressed with what can be accomplished with 4 hours of sleep. I also thought that Sony had landed at the bottom of a cliff quite some time ago. It's time, Gavin. You can let go. You can! And happy 30th birthday - you don't look a day over 50.
Happy Birthday!!!! Love the content
Thank you for all your hard work! Love coming along 😊
Congratulations Gavin. You should have given Amanda a nice long red dress but very nice photo and stunning location.
Incredible place, incredible photos!
What a location! Stunning compositions.😍
Happy birthday! Beautiful shots once again.
The Problem u hv with the Sony displaying this error is most likely related to the Hot Shoe getting wet.
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!! Another great video!
Happy Birthday! Love the composition tips
love these images. Happy birthday Gavin.
Happy birthday, young fella. Cracking shots.
Happy Birthday Gavin, great shots as ever.

Wonderful stuff Gavin - props to you and your lady, that featured shot is splendid!
Happy Birthday Gavin! Hope you enjoyed your day and once again, another excellent video!
Happy Birthday !! Very happy to see you both taking better care of yourselves.
Happy Birthday, youngster! Great video!
Hot shoe cover in place and waterproof tape over it, after drying it with a hairdryer [a7riv] helped me a bit in the humid rain forest. It's a shame you can't turn the error warning off? But then all my lenses misted up. Great video / photography as always.
A74 - Hot Shoe cover in place all throughout SE Asia, without an issue . Never got a warning, camera was spot on. Gavin just has bad luck me thinks
@@theBeardedOx maybe fixed the issue with the newer a74.
It is because of the water getting in and causing a short out between the Mi hot shoe contacts. That is why they add the hot shoe cover in the box.
@@easterlingderek34 in rain or very humid conditions on my a7riv i still get that annoying message even with the cover in place!
@@feddonmel7962 yeah it is always the understanding that it can still be important to avoid having it in very humid places as humidity can get in no matter where it is. It could of gotten up behind the hotshoe.
Happy 30th Birthday Gavin! Stunning images too of an amazing place.
What a great video. Lots of useful tips and some brilliant photos.
Happy Birthday Gavin!
What a beautiful model!
In that 50 years you've travelled 29 billion miles in orbit around the sun! Happy Birthday Gavin!

Happy Birthday Gavin, the photo shoot was amazing, cheers Mate.
Happy Birthday Gavin!!
Go and get yourself one of those rubberish hot shoe covers that every Sony camera comes with.
You are 50 and have to take care of your heart 😜😉
Happy birthday Gavin, great shots, the environmental portrait was excellent
Happy Birthday Chap. You've brought me a lot of entertainment lately. I've been bingewatching all of your last few years of videos, in the same way that a Yorkshireman binges on Twirls.
