"It's just the sort of thing you do a hundred times with a child" -- Shelley Duvall in The Shining

- Wendy explains to her son's doctor how her husband, Jack (played by Jack Nicholson, not present in this scene), had in the past "accidentally" dislocated their son's shoulder. Stephen King reportedly said Duvall was not what he had in mind as Wendy Torrance, but that's moot when you're open to what Duvall (and, grudgingly, admittedly director Stanley Kubrick) create with the character. In this scene, here is the Wendy who manages to convince herself for so long that her husband is not a bad guy.
Rumor has it that cigarette is still burning.
Rest in peace shelley duvall!!!
One of the most important scenes in the movie. This is the revelation of Wendy's psychological profile. A neurotic, scared, naive, mentally and emotionally beat down woman in denial.
Exactly!
Yep, you can see that she is already cowed down. They picked a good actress for this role.
I find Wendy weak
Beautiful talented Iconic Actress RIP SD 🌹
This is a terrific, revealing scene. Duvall's performance says a lot with a little.
Yep, forlorn, hopeful, doubting-- and she's funny, without jettisoning the horror to come
we will miss you shelley duvall.
An autobiography movie should be made with Mia Goth as Shelley
Best movie mom ever. Only Danny, unlike adults around him, see his father was beyond redemption.
Shelley's Wendy is so strikingly different to Stephen King's, which he famously didn't like. But somehow she manages to be more disturbingly naive, sympathetic and vulnerable. You feel for her from the very first moment you see her. In the book (which I love by the way), Wendy reacts as every other woman would react in those circumstances. The movie's Wendy feels so out of her world that you almost laugh at her - then you remember what she's going through and feel guilty for finding it funny. So powerful. Plus, a viewer spends a good amount of time wondering how the hell movie Jack and Wendy ended up together, how this marriage even works. It just adds to the mystery, the inexplicable that Kubrick so loved and used in his movies.
So true about what Shelley brings to Wendy. As for what brought Wendy and Jack together-- I'd say dial it back a few years, pre-abuse, they both probably came across very differently then
The look on the doctors face after Wendy tells her about the dislocated shoulder incident cracks me up everytime!
So well-played by both of them
Yeah no doubt!
That was the first thing I thought, too.
She looked horrified!
Shelley is so sweet 😭 i love her
Oh, i knowwww....!! Don't miss my Shelley playlist, still very much in progress, though! czcams.com/play/PLnZawTGRehPtYzXJNVerDOPsCSyqIweaw.html
Until she's not well we all miss her but see her not well hurts us all
It hurts me didn't age well whatever happened to her stress I suppose I loved her in this movie and more of Brewster McCloud
@@rickyvalentine5779 yeah me too hurt me too and i do like her role in the shining and I don't care what they think
Shelley Duvall has a unique beauty. I loved her in 3 Women and Thieves Like Us.

@@DavidGibson154 thank you!!!
@@DavidGibson154 love those scenes
I always loved how realistic this scene was portrayed. Most abusers promise to be better after doing so many terrible things to their loved ones. This makes it incredibly complicated, particularly for women who have undergone verbal, physical, or in Wendy's case, witnessed abuse. And they'll try to brush it off like it's no big deal in front of other people because they really do think it's no big deal. I know Wendy was more angry and strong willed in the novel but I think they took a more sadly realistic approach
She has such a nice voice..
She really was so beautiful
Is!
Great acting by Shelley. A beautiful woman who I believe still has many strong days ahead of her, despite the recent Dr. Phil controversy.
I agree, she's great-- in this scene, showing Wendy's nervousness causing her to say a little more than she means to, surprising herself at what she's saying, trying to conceal her own dismay from the doctor, continuously saying a little more, hearing how false her denial about her husband's abuse has been now that she's talking about it out loud.
I kind of think of the Dr. Phil controversy as no longer "recent" -- it's been five years-- I haven't seen it myself, but whatever else, it sounds like she trusted him too much with what she was saying
@@DavidGibson154 Yep, excellent acting. And it was a few years ago. But have we seen anything of Shelley more recently than that? She hasn’t really given any other interviews, at least not on camera, right?
@@AndyB1286 I'm in a Facebook group, the Shelley Duvall Fan Club, which reports from someone who stays in touch with her, sees her occasionally, posts recent pictures. She also lives on a farm/ranch near Austin, Texas, so there occasionally are local mentions

Her treatment at the hands of that quack turned me off of Dr. Phil forever.
How was she nominated for a razzie in this role? Baffling
I agree. But at the time, she was so offbeat. Her most successful roles had been as social outsiders Millie Lammoreaux in 3 Women and as Keechie Thieves Like Us. Wendy was relatively "normal".
She is extremely beautiful
Wow Shelley is so pretty.
Abusive father and husband. She shows the signs of an abused wife
Such an incredible scene
Thanks for sharing! That ash though 🚬
Sometimes Shelley smoked as much in movies as Bette Davis! Or Jane Fonda as Lillian Hellman: czcams.com/video/wI682PMJGuY/video.html
Surely couldn't believe she was also Olive Oyl and that host from Fairie Tales show - watched both as a kid and only now, I knew it was her lol
She's wondeful! Popeye a d The Shining came out in the same year, 1980...
@@DavidGibson154 Oh yeah, I agree with you! I say that I loved even her acting with Sissy in 3 women. They were awesome!! 👍
Shelleys great!!👌🏾👌🏾
Inimitable!
This scene shows how horrible Jack Torrance is, how he’s a nasty and temperamental alcoholic.
Believe the lady with shelly played sharon newman mom on Young and restless back in the day
Oh, I used to watch Y & R!
This is Anne Jackson, who was married to actor Eli Wallach.

This scene is not in the version of the film I have seen. I have seen the Shining at least 12 times and never seen this scene before.
I realize I have only seen the European version which is half an hour shorter and judging by this scene which feels extraneous, the better version.
@@ivankaramasov maybe-- but I love extraneous scenes that add texture and flavor. And they also increase the dreamlike, getting-lost-in-another-world quality of film
admittedly, there might be parts of 'the shining' i'd cut, but this isn't one of them..
@@ivankaramasovInteresting. I disagree. For me the scene is fascinating-- well acted and enriching the characters' backstories. I've only known the film *with* this scene.
Where is this scene in the movie i have never seen it?
I am wondering the same!!! I've seen the film twice and have NO recollection of it. Am I nuts lol?
Poor Wendy
I know, right?
Man writes fantasy horror about his abusive crazy wife.... The Shinning
Haha
Virginia Slims are a fitting cigarette for Mrs. Torrence. ❤️
Lol! Is that what they are? Also fitting for Shelley as Millie Lammoreaux, but I'm not sure that's what these are: czcams.com/video/Gbl_jqfmBEk/video.html
@@DavidGibson154 I can’t quite tell because of the resolution of the video but I think those are Virginia Slims too, I think I can see the red stripe on the side of the pack. Methinks Shelley smoked them at the time and therefore so did the characters she played. :) Now she smokes Parliaments apparently, lol.

Can't hear it
Hm, not sure why
This is not in the film
Do you mean, it wasn't in the theatrical release? -- I don't remember...
yes, it most certainly was.
It isnt part of the UK cut
Yes it most certainly is
The people that argue that this film isn’t about child abuse both physical and sexual are willfully blind.
It's certainly about abuse, I'd have to watch again for the part about it being sexual. The idea of the creepy rich cabal though is one Kubrick would return to with Eyes Wide Shut, and that was certainly sexual exploitation, by the elite. Kubrick may have held back and not wanted to make Eyes Wide Shut about child exploitation, although the scenario feels very Jeffrey-Epstein-y.
I think this is why she age well and got smoking and stress and anxiety possibly Bullied to innocent actress that young and gorgeous until this day she was younger in Brewster McCloud more attractive
Yes, it was a grueling role under any circumstances, she didn't need Kubrick's bullying on top of it! And she is so good in this quiet scene, Wendy trying to believe her own explanation about how Jack broke their son's arm-- I don't think Shelley needed any bullying to give the great performance she gave.
I'm sad. I'm suicidal. I wrote a suicide note because I'm gonna commit suicide soon. This hurts me. #bekind
