  • On this channel I cover the histories of nations empires and people from all over the world. I especially enjoy focusing on areas that are covered less in the mainstream or examining a familiar topic from a different perspective. Historical topics are combined with animated maps and visuals that I draw, to hopefully condense complicated subjects into a understandable framework that will leave you wanting to learn more. I hope you enjoy these videos as much as I have enjoyed making them :) If you like what you see here then please consider supporting

    Thanks for the history. A small point of correction, the Nanny of Maroons ' picture is on the Jamaican $500 note not the $50 note. A Jamaican friend gave me a note as a present when we were in school together.

    There is a difference between Nana Abena Poku and Nanny of Jamaica but they are all Asantes.
    Abena Poku became Abla Pokou. She died in Ivory Coast shortly after establishing the Baoule Kingdom.
    Queen Nanny was born to a royal Asante Prince called Naquan who was betrayed by the Spaniards and sold into slavery when he joined them on an expedition to Jamaica. So Nanny was born in Jamaica into the Asante people who saw her as a royalty because of her father being royal.

  • @ruutz1
    @ruutz1 Před 2 lety +6

    Very interesting.., but Queen Nanny of the Maroons (Abena Pokua) who became a warrior and a liberator of the slaves in Jamaica 🇯🇲 is regarded as an Ashanti young princes who was stolen and shipped into slavery in Jamaica. Please, can you confirm that she was sold or rather kidnapped by akwasi broni.
    And to add a bit of how brave and courageous she was, the Ashanti Kingdom flag, YELLOW, GREEN and BLACK was adopted in her honour as the Jamaican 🇯🇲 flag. Queen Nanny is regarded as the nemesis of the British empire in Jamaica.

      Yes she was an Asante Queen, who was taken to Jamaica and became Nanny that we know today.

      Abena Pokua and Nanny are different people. Abena Pokua went to Ivory Coast and was a queen there. She is known as Abla Pokua in Ivory Coast. Nanny of Jamaica was not a queen in Asante. No one would have been able to capture a Asante queen and ship them to the Americas in those days.

    • @ruutz1
      @ruutz1 Před 2 lety +2

      @@kwameadu0075 yes Abena Pokua and Queen Nanny is the same person. You're right she wasn't an Ashanti Queen, she was a PRINCESS who was exiled in Ivory Coast and then larter shipped to Jamaica.
      But massa, the wolves seized and exiled Yaa Asantewaa and Prempeh, and you are saying no Ashanti Queen could be kidnapped?

      @@ruutz1 1. Abena Pokuaa or Abla Pokua was a queen who contested Nana Opoku Ware I for the rulership of Asante. She was defeated and she lead her people to Ivory Coast. She sacrificed her son to a river gos to save her people and that is why she is revered by the Akans in Ivory Coast to this day. She died as a queen in Ivory Coast.
      2. Nana Prempeh I and Nana Yaa Asantewaa were not kidnapped. Asante was annexed in to the British isles and Prempeh I and Yaa Asantewaa were political prisoners. This is normal practice even today. They were not kidnapped and sold in to slavery. They were still treated as royalty by the British.

    Abusua is generally an Akan thing. It is not restricted to Asante.
    At any rate, all these divisions are man-made. All Akans are the same people.
