The Curious History of "Jehovah's Calendar"

  • In the 1930s, efforts by Jehovah's Witnesses to eliminate all pagan practices led to an unusual endpoint: an attempt to create an entirely new timekeeping system for their members. But friction between Watchtower officials helped doom the new calendar, and indirectly led to Joseph Rutherford arguing the Gobitis flag salute case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

It's amazing that they still continue to print all these dates with a pagan beginning on their magazines.

I didn’t join until 1989 (left 1992) but my brother introduced me to jws in 1974. There were a lot of kids coming off the “hippie movement” in the 70s, it was a searching time. The religion was extremely different at that time. Kingdom Halls were separately owned. It was liberal, education was not discouraged where I was, the elder arrangement was relatively new so they weren’t pricks like now. The anointed were usually older couples who had seen a lot and were beloved. They had the “Make Sure” book and people were encouraged to fact check against secular sources. Josephus the Jewish (Greek?) historian was a source often quoted in the Aid to Bible Understanding book (now apostate literature) in which Ray Franz was a writer. Don’t be too hard on your parents 💙 it was a different time and for many it wasn’t difficult to believe Once Upon a Time.

It would have been impossible to imagine for an 80's JW that the world could still be there in the year 2000 (g86 11/8 pp. 6-8). We are in 2020 far from the so-called imminence of the end sold by the Watchtower for decades (1914, 1925, 1975, 1994…). This temporal swindle will have had only one purpose, that of continually putting the follower in a context of short time. In the face of the passing of time the Watchtower will have no other choice but to radicalize in order not to disappear. Still a little time and soon its new double and superimposed generation which must not pass (like all the others) will pass (like all the others). In short, the eternal restart. Followers are formatted to blindly follow men who themselves run in circles awaiting a great persecution that will never come. There are no more pilots on the plane and the plane loses altitude every year. Over time, history will take care of forgetting this American publishing house. If one day (in the 2040s) my grandchildren ask me : "Grandpa what was that Watchtower ?" I would answer them… The very essence of human vanity.
    wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/101986802#h=46
g86 11/8 pp.8 : Samuel, a 15-year-old youth from the same country, also believes in a complete change: “For the year 2000, I visualize a world transformed into a beautiful paradise! But I don’t think that either the present world or its rulers will live to see that day. . . .
The message from the Watchtower is that the end is at hand. The Watchtower thinks the end should come before the year 2000, but cannot write it down because that date has no biblical basis. The Watchtower will therefore send its message through the writing of a child.
So we cannot impute this text to him. This sleight of hand will allow the Watchtower moving forward a date without directly being blamed. This date will do its job well in the minds of followers and I remember it sparked a new wave of enthusiasm.

Is scary to see how the Jehovah’s Witnesses church has gone so far from the original truth. Although, as Bible students, we recognized the pagan history of Christmas, most of us celebrated because it reminds us of the birth of our savior Jesus the son of Jehovah.

OMG... you did an excellent job covering this. I had to laugh at the Watchtower's notion that having their own calendar was easy to implement. If you recall, the society had recently - don't know if they are still doing this - aligned the days of the week on "their" calendars to have both weekend days next to each other. The Gregorian calendar, of course, starts with Sunday and ends with Saturday. However, in the Society's infinite wisdom, they decided to put the days Saturday and Sunday next to each other on the same row, so as to assist with people doing more in Field Service on w/e's! This minor change - esp. comparing it with that ridiculous earlier calendar concept - caused many to mess up appointments, especially the elderly who either went a day earlier to a doctor's appt. or a day later! You think they would have learned their lesson, don't MESS with the Gregorian calendar - which btw, is burnt into our brain from infancy! Goodness. See image of their attempt at changing the calendar again: www.bennettcards.co.uk/shop/images/WC0017[1].jpg

In most week to view diaries you buy in UK the week starts on a Monday, ending with the weekend. Though church related groups publish diaries that start with Sunday as the first day of the week (as described in ACTs - the believers met on the first day of each week, the day of resurrection; and the Jewish tradition of sabbath being the last of the 7 days of creation, and day of rest, being saturday, with resurrection of Jesus the day after the sabbath)

Of course, Catholics did figure out Mary's cycle. They placed the Feast of the Annunciation (Mary's conception) on March 25, exactly 9 months before Christmas. These dates originally corresponded to the Spring equinox and the winter solstice, but they shifted over the centuries as the calendar got more and more out of whack. Pope Gregory did not bring them back into exact alignment with the solar dates.

Astral impact Julian 2370bc Nov 20 (1656am 600-2-10) currently makes it impossible to calculate sidereal orbit size, ellipse, Earth speed, and axis precession prior to that date so that only close approximation is the rotation what would now be tagged 24 hours 20 minutes per day for 360 days totalling the same 8766 hours. So nothing of Adam or any preFlood date can be absolute. Contrary to French JW Gerard Gertroux contradicting WT with 3170bc absolute Flood and 1533bc absolute exodus.

Remember Christmas wasn't a big deal in America until the mid 1800s. The early pilgrims were puritans so they wouldn't have really celebrated Christmas. It was the Victorians that helped popularise Christmas in America with Charles Dickens book A Christmas Carol and a picture of Victoria and Albert around the Xmas tree. So in Charles Taze Russell time Xmas wasn't quite as we know it today.

"Iimmaculate conception" is the idea that Mary was conceived without sin--a doctrine created by folk mythology and recognized by the Catholic church in 1870. That's what you have confused with the idea of the virgin birth, which is the idea that Jesus was born of a virgin.

Catholics have the annunciation of Gabriel to Mary. - March 25
Technically Mary birthing Jesus is the Virgin Birth; the Immaculate conception refers to Mary's own birth - that she was perfect from, the start, a theological twist to deal with how a perfect Jesus could be born to a woman if she had original sin, but merely end up shifting the problem back a generation rather than resolve it

I think you have made an error in your argumentation in the early part of your video. That WT article said Jesus was "begat", ie born, on Dec. 25, NOT conceived as your following statements argues. Now I find it hard to defend JWs in anything but "fair is fair". As messed up and manipulative as they are, they aren't THAT stupid.

I know it's a year since this was posted, but seems in that year, no-one noticed or thought it appropriate to respond. "Begat" does mean "conceived" in this context - it especially refers to the causative role of the male in reproduction. If we trawl through the "Abraham begat Isaac" portions of scripture we can appreciate this was the aspect that Watchtower would be understanding and intending it to mean.
