There’s an essential piece of lore sandwiched in the end of episode 54 and the beginning of episode 54 explaining why they have to take the entrance and can’t just get to the Grand Line by sailing south. I wish the anime didn’t do it that way, highly recommend watching the last minute two-ish minutes of episode 54 and the beginning of episode 55 (basically until they escape the Calm Belt and Nami explains what’s going on). It’s a brief but important detour.
The filler arc before this is pretty good the main take away is the guy who got kicked overboard was a really bad guy and had eaten a devil fruit so he absolutely died.
One thing; is that the filler added confuses people as to Smoker's motives a little as there's nothing about him thinking pirates don't live up to Roger, though he does think many are sub-par in the manga and he only meets Luffy once; so it's clearer that he's very much an anti-pirates dude who gets an obsession due to his dedication and basically divine intervention saving Luffy/mirroring what he saw when Roger was executed as a child; which obv Roger was impressive which is cool to a kid but as an adult Smoker see's that and thinks pirates are bad so pirate kings are bad I cannot let this kid become like Roger because thats bad for the world snd he's obviously special.
After the fillers, you can just watch the recaps. Hehe. Maybe it summarises the fillers. Idk. Be aware there are some canon stuff (just a few) in the beginning and at the end of those fillers. I think the fillers are enjoyable to watch off camera, if you want more of the crew. But not worth rewatching though.
