  • I love the dismount 😂
This was one of the craziest things to happen to me during a meet.
Cramping during my routine potentially cost me $11,000 of national team stipend money.

A lot of Olympians (mostly in other sports where you train a bit less) work multiple jobs or are on welfare.
The USA does not really financially support athletes, nor does it pay well for Olympic medals like many other countries do.
Gymnastics is an extremely expensive sport, so it's extra hard on athletes.

@@2755_Ishycakesmy aunt played on the US Olympic volleyball team for nearly 10 years and I remember the sacrifices her and her husband made. Financially, it was hard on them but the biggest sacrifice IMO was sweets. At family gatherings, they would smell the desserts to satisfy their cravings but didn’t eat any. Her first year after retiring from the Olympic team, she was so happy to be able to eat sweets again. Lol. They both still talk about how amazing the experience was and how they’d do it again if they had the choice.

ian, i am just some idiot on internet, so take this with grain of salt and disregard if must, but my idea is that this was caused by a imbalance in forearm muscles, leading to a lack in wrist stability in certain ranges of motion.
basically, in men's gymanstic there are apparatus where pretty much everyone these days trains with grips, which mess up your hands ability to feel the apparatus, and thus reduces the forearm engagement a lot.
i am not a doctor or a physio or sports med or anything as such, but i am guessing by the way your forearm cramp presented on the salute, with an extreme involuntary pronated flexion, that it was a hypercontraction on the forearm wrist flexion muscles.
the reason for cramps like these is usually a muscle being overworked and overextended beyond its ability to stabilize the joint, and this overexertion leads to an involuntary hypercontraction which feels painful, particularly common in strength based sports.
when men's gymnasts do parallel bars and pommel horse, they don't use grips, and thus get the full level of training in their hands when it comes to side to side deviations (pbar) and rotations from pronate to supinate (pommel horse).
but, and here's where my thoughts can get controversial, on the high bar and especially on the rings, the fact that pretty much all modern male gymanst use leather grips, means that the flexion and extension ability of the wrist joint is simply not trained, and this lack of ability really can hamper your efforts on the other apparatus such as pbars, because now you have a wrist which is weak in certain ranges of motion and stronger in others, leading to instability, leading to the weak muscle overexerting and cramping up.
not only that, but the hands and fingers themselves have muscles in them that are completely taken out of the equation and left untrained when we use grips on these apparatus which train the hands the most, specifically high bar, and especially the rings.
i am not going to say just ditch grips, instead an easy solution would just be to do a lot of wrist mobility and strengthening work, especially in the ranges of motion in which you are weak.
remember, to stabilize a joint during our work, essentially all of the muscles which have action at that joint will be working simultaneously.
if you have a weak link in there, joint stability is simply not possible.
good luck man, god bless you, and god bless gymanstics.
