  • www.WelburnGourdFarm.com We often get questions from newer gourd crafters about our gourds, so we decided to ask Phoebe Welburn to answer some of the most common questions we get about gourds.
In this video, Phoebe will show you:
    • Fabulous finished gourd art
    • How to clean the outside of your gourds
    • The differences between various gourd shapes and sizes
    • How our gourds are priced and much more!
Then in the second part of this video, Phoebe will take you out to the gourd fields to show you what most people never see: the gourds as they are drying!
This is a video for you if you're new to gourds and it's filled with information that even some seasoned gourd crafters might not have known. Enjoy the stunning visuals and never before seen footage of the growing fields!

I love gourds. I enjoy growing them though. I'd love to see more videos focused on gardening gourds, your farm when the gourds are green and growing on the vines. Would be great to see them change over the seasons.

We have the pleasure to live in southern California close enough to the farm to drive in and purchase there. The folks are very friendly, helpful, and ready to assist in any way they can.
Seeing those racks of gourds under the oak trees is a sight to send any artist's heart palpitating and being able to wander around to choose your own gourds is an absolute treat. We always spend more than we expect when we visit but being able to drive home with big bags of future art in the car is well worth it!

I've gave away the ocean drum to artists playing in healing ceremonies. The teacher of our drum class was very spiritual, making it a really beautiful day. We added prayers and meditations into our circle as we cleaned our gourds and stretched the hides. Seemed appropriate for it to go with the healers when I met them.

And I mean it, everything from pattern cutting to embroidery techniques, name of tools and stuff, weaving techniques, macramae, basket weaving, metal work, Stone cutting, Wood carving,...it all starts with an idea, and then the research to find techniques and materials to perform it. I am a painter in first hand, A Portrait painter, yet there is much more to my personal creative drive. Thank you for your time and exellent narration! So Welburn Gourd Farm to remember! Noted. Exellent, so you cultivates these guys, ecologically, and ship worldwide! Personal question, what you guys do during the growing season, between harvests?

Here is another suggestion for a gourd project that is easy and fun. Make a jack-o-lantern. Historically, jack-o-lanterns were carved from gourds or even large potatoes. The history of the jack-o-lantern is interesting and your gourd jack-o-lantern will no doubt spark conversation when it is displayed around Halloween time. Halloween comes from the old pagan holiday of Samhain (pronounced "Sow-Wen") when it was believed that the spirits of the dead could once again walk the earth for the night. The spirits would often perpetrate mischief on the living so people would dress up to look like spirits and go around checking on their neighbors. The carved gourds held a candle to light the path. On arrival at a neighbor's house, one was served refreshments. Usually small cakes and local ale. This is the origin of trick-or-treat as well as the jack-o-lantern.

Gourds are in the same family as a pumpkin but they are not a pumpkin. When comparing the two, gourds are mostly ornamental in type. On the contrary, pumpkins are edible and are eaten when ripe. Another difference that can be seen between the two is that gourds can be only dried when mature and pumpkins can be roasted, baked, steamed, or boiled when mature.

Since you are looking for Ipus, you would need to place a Custom Order. With a Custom Order, you can select gourds that meet your exact needs. There is more labor involved on Custom Orders, prices are a bit higher and there is a $200 minimum. The price of each gourd depends on the diameter you are looking for. The gourds can be cut and cleaned for you but the pricing would be higher for that as well. Do you know what size you are looking for? You can always contact our office at 760-728-4271, we will be happy to answer all or your questions.
      Kindly,

No, those tiny gourds are likely Tennessee spinning gourds! They mature at a small size. Those seeds will produce tiny greet fruits that if left to mature and dry to brown on the vine, if the stem is very straight, you can flick them between your thumb and finger and make them spin like a top!! I have been obsessed with gourds of all types since I lived in Hawaii in 2000!
