  • “Chocolate diamonds” are brown diamonds that are not too dark and not too light in color. Brown diamonds were not popular in jewelry until the 2000s. “Chocolate diamonds” was trademarked by Le Vian in 2000 and are now popular in jewelry worn by celebrities, like Rihanna and JLo, and non-celebrities.

      De Beers no longer holds the monopoly position that they once had, though they are still a huge player, but all gem-quality diamond producers today profit from De Beers marketing brilliance in pushing diamond jewellery sales - particularly engagement rings. I would say that gold, like diamonds, has its practical uses but its value also has a large part to do with people simply believing that it has high worth.

      @Coconut Pal Blue on silver is a nice combo tbh. I think a sapphire in a titanium tension ring would look pretty nice. I have nothing against jewellery but I think that the marketing of diamonds is a bit deceptive as to their rarity and worth and trying to make it an expected requirement of an engagement to have an expensive ring is quite predatory in my opinion.

    • @hiddenboi69
      @hiddenboi69 Před 5 lety +13

      @Coconut Pal if you like purity, go either 18k gold or platinum, anything above 18k is too pure, making the gold soft and very easily damagable. As a guy, I prefer 10k for its hardness. Purity isn't always better when it comes to gold, a ring takes far too much wear for something so pure

Black diamonds, called carbonado or bort, are common as far as diamonds come, opaque due to their cryptocrystalline structure, and relatively difficult to fracture (unlike gem diamonds, which, while equally hard at 10 Mohs, are also so rigid that they're very fragile to fracture at certain angles, a property called "perfect cleavage" - black diamonds, being made of interlaced microcrystals instead of a single large crystal, don't have angles of perfect cleavage as the fracture can't travel across the interlacing crystals to break the gem), making them good for industrial use.

The idea of spending two months salary on it? Also marketing. In fact, De Beers (who once held a near monopoly on diamond production) originally recommended a single months salary until they realised they could push it to two and make even more money.

    Pro tip before you buy a diamond ask, how much that same diamond would sell for second hand, you’d be surprised how much there marked up and the second hand price, if you could even sell them, would be far closer to the ‘real’ value.
