    ABOUT THE PIECE:
    Driving through many major American cities, it's hard not to notice the plethora of vacant and abandonded lots. Where once stood proud buisnesses, lavish homes, or civic buildings, there is now little more than a blank, grassy plot of land. Though the void of the canvas on the cityscape can be profoundly sad, something amazing happens within these empty spaces. Left alone, life wells forth, and these vacant lots start to produce trees, flowers, and grass. many people have started referring to such lots as Ghost Gardens. In this piece, you can hear where the lot once held a vibrant and exciting tone, only to slowly fade away and change. Through a series of transitional themes, the main idea reforms and comes back as the piece concludes, thus depicting the beauty of the land as it is reimagined.

    I played this for my senior year in high school. It was a pretty easy piece compared to others, but I chose it purely based off the name. I mastered it in about 2 or 3 months. With nothing else to do, I just kept practicing with it.
    I got to a point where I was ‘playing’ with it. I was adjusting speed in certain parts, dynamics, how one section flowed into another. After a bit I had my own way of playing this.
    At a concert where 13 different ensembles or solos were played at my school, I was third in line. I played my version, the version that I enjoyed playing. And I never played that good before or after that concert, and sure people always clap after a piece just to show appreciation, but this felt like there was actual enjoyment behind the claps. There were still like 10 pieces played after mine, but after the show people were coming up to me saying I was their favorite, which has never happened.
    And to this day I’m baffled that somehow no one recorded it so I can’t prove how well I actually played. And I can’t play it again because I graduated and don’t have access to a marimba anymore.

      It's always so cool when a solo becomes your solo. Music can sound beautiful when played by a talented musician, but the same goes for the musicians who actually enjoy what they play.

      that's really cool.. I'm in 8th grade rn and the name really stuck with me aswell, thats partly why i chose it. one of my friends (year above me) played this for his solo last year and the moment i heard it i wanted to play it so badly. it's really just an incredible song, and i've been working on my own way to play it

    Learned Rain Dance and earned gold at state with my only marimba piece. I was known for being the snare kid and I’m so glad I learned 4 mallets junior year, because I heard a friend playing this and had to learn it. I stayed during my at home study hall learning this piece, and it was the last thing I ever played in the band room before leaving for the last time. Will always hold so many memories and emotions

    Currently finishing up my first semester of my senior year in college, Ghost Garden recently, in part, got me promoted to 300 level performance studies. As others have specified in the comments, the piece is balanced by strong compositional technique while still having enough room and space to leave certain things open to interpretation. +moltom26 Hey moltom. It's actually an Adams 4.3 soloist marimba with padouk bars. Since the piece an intermediate piece and is designed for students at the high school level, I wanted to do a recording featuring an intermediate level instrument, similar to that likely found in many high school band rooms. Adams makes great stuff, and the room sounded killer. I was pretty pleased with the way the sound came out, even though the instrument didn't break the bank. I hope this answers your question.

      @lilycalico3957 Před 5 lety +3

      He absolutely did not play it exactly. I’ve only reached B (m38) in learning it and m33-37 were completely wrong. The music has the right hand playing A and C at the beginning (but he played B and D) and the left hand plays fourths, not fifths. As a composer, I realize how hard it is to play exactly what you’ve written or rewritten, especially when you’ve memorized it differently. Still, it would have been great for him to check himself before he recorded it.

    So well performed! Just really gorgeous 😍
    The back lighting of the video distracted me quite a lot though.

    Does anyone who learned this have any tips to make it sound more beautiful I guess? This is the first solo I've started learning on marimba, and even though I can play it mostly, it is just missing the musicality of this performance.

      Im in the process of learning this piece, but in my opinion I think a good way to add some musicality is to play around with the dynamics and tempo :)
      Like in places where there arent any written dynamics, just play around with them until you find what you enjoy best!

      The dude that’s playing it is the composer, and whenever he wrote it he did write in some typos, but it also may just be him adding his own taste to it which is always good. Hope you had fun playing it!
