ASUS ROG Ally - How to avoid burning out your SD cards/SD card reader

  • Due to it's poor location, the Asus ROG Ally is known for burning out SD card readers, and if it doesn't destroy the reader it can destroy the SD card in them.
    Personally I've had at least 3 cards destroyed by the device, despite doing everything I can to minimize the temperature the device runs at.
    This video shows one possible solution to avoid that, it does require purchases (none of this is paid promotion) but it is cheaper than burning out an SD card.
    I am testing this set up at the moment, and will report back on any issues i find (if any)
    Search in your local region for:
    USB C sd card reader
    USB C Charging Split Adapter - so you can plug in your power cable and usb c sd card reader
    180 Degree USB C Adapter - make sure it has 100w PD listed on it.
    The last product listed you should find similar searching for USB C hub
    NOTE: Later model ROG Allys (revision 8 and 9) are meant to have fixed this issue, and if you have RMA'd your ally recently and got it back it should also be fixed, but for those of us with older Ally devices this could be a viable work around.

    Where is the review for the Asus Rog ally after using the c type splitter for charging and plugging the SD card?
    I've been waiting to hear from you.

      So sorry, completely missed this. The charging and plug in SD card worked. I just got so frustrated at the speed of writes to it when any of the games were being written to that I stopped using the SD card. I've since sold my Ally and got an Ally X so couldn't try anything intensive

    i think the problem solved with the new batches, they put a copper shield arund the card reader and upgraded the fan speed for more cooling

    I have a 5 in 1 dongle, the original charger says it's not receiving enough power through the dock... My ally is safe to use that ? I mean a down shortcircuit or something?

    • @HandheldGamingFan
      @HandheldGamingFan  Před 7 měsíci

      A dongle takes some charge for the devices plugged in to it so it may be dropping below the 65w for the ally. It most likely means you will only be able to play at 25 Watts not 30 Watts max. Shouldn't harm the ally. Check the specs for your dongle for its pd pass through or if it has multiple usb c on the dongle use the one with the pd wording under it to plug your charger in to

    Just as I was watching this, my sd card reader failed, and I bought mine in December last year

      I'm so sorry to hear that. Can you return it to the store for a replacement? or do you have to RMA it back to Asus? - I watched someone on youtube who had his Asus RMA'd and when it came back the SD card reader problem had gone away (2 months using a 1 tb card in it everyday). That was end of last year.

      Won’t the reader in the ally burnt out whatever is used?

    • @HandheldGamingFan
      @HandheldGamingFan  Před 8 měsíci

      @mart719 the sd card is not plugged in to the allys sd card reader but an external one so it's not being exposed to the heat from the onboard card reader

      @@HandheldGamingFan I thought it was the ally’s card reader that fails?

    • @HandheldGamingFan
      @HandheldGamingFan  Před 8 měsíci

      @mart719 it is. My ally has ruined at least 3 sd cards. Here I'm showing a setup that bypasses the reader on the ally so that you can safely play games off of sd cards.

      The go is my personal choice but I love the ally still, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone because of the sd card reader. A lot of people think the go is too big and bulky. I love it.

      I returned my Go and sold my Steam Deck then got the Ally and I couldn't be happier... well... I could be if they bring out a Ally with a edge to edge screen and tweak the spec a little.
