      Thank you, that's one of the wonderful things about having Buddleias in our gardens, they bring in all sorts of wonderful winged visitors, and on a summer's evening, its wonderful to watch them all flutter back and forth and of course the nectar in their tightly packed little tubular flowers provides very valuable nutrition too. A food source that sustains many different species, including of course helping out in the magical migration of Monarchs.

      Yes, its amazing how they find them, and it is such a joy to see them flitting back and forth visiting all those big, fragrant blooms. And of course, all the Buddleias in our gardens provide a valuable refueling stop on the Monarch's long, perilous journey south too. Thanks for helping them and reminding us how enjoyable these plants are.

      A bargain is always good. But, be careful! An ailing, disease ridden plant can be very expensive at any price!
      David says some of his worst garden weeds and problems were imported into his garden in apparent "good deals"! What can seem like a good opportunity at first, can in the long term, become a "trojan horse" that infects and spreads to other plants and areas. There's usually a reason (and some of that is not good), why plants are offered at knock down prices! So beware, a lot of this comes down to having faith in the integrity of the source.

    We planted two Pugster Blues, one in mid-March and the other in mid-April. Both are doing quite well and have started to flower. The Pugster series is sold at many nursery locations here in Central Texas, so it didn't dawn on me that these might be considered invasive in other parts of the country (for instance, they can't be shipped to the states of Washington and Oregon). I thought I read that the Pugster series is tagged as "sterile" by the USDA by their definition, but it is not 100% sterile. I am not sure what to think about that.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před měsícem +1

      Buddleia davidii (the original species) is a problem (and banned) in the mild, rainy climate of the northwest states. Thankfully some of our best scientific institutions and plant breeders are working on developing sterile or sterile selections, and here at Overdevest we are dedicated to offering any that come forward, which means that we can all look forward to enjoying growing butterfly bushes (and other potentially invasive species) without having to worry about them seeding into the landscape.
      In recent years these largely unsung heroes, have brought us exciting, innovative solutions like sterile Barberies, Miscanthus, Fountain Grasses etc. ones that now (thanks to them) you will find at some of our partnering garden centers under the WorryFree® range.

      They are so popular, that you should not have any difficulty finding them at reputable garden centers.
      Because they flower during the summer months, it might be a little later than spring when you come across them. And since sometimes, plants get mixed up or mislabeled, it might be wise to wait until so you see them in flower and then you can choose the ones that appeal to you most.

    We love the huge flowers on Pugster Amethyst and their fragrance and thought Pugster Blue would be similar but just with blue color flowers. However, Pugster Blue is not as fragrant or hardly fragrant and the flowers are smallish but prolific and very hardy in our zone 5, outside of Chicago.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thank you, for mentioning this. We've noticed that Pugster Amethyst is especially fragrant and that along with the very large, full flowers is a major reason why it is so valuable in our gardens. As you've probably noted, David in his opening segment was remarking upon this. These are indeed lovely features of this excellent variety.
      In his dialogue, he points out that each of the selections have different parentage, which of course, is why there's a variation in their individual characteristics including the hardiness level.
      It is great to get your observations and direct experiences. We are sure, this will be reassuring for viewers in colder parts of our region's Zone 5 areas.
      This precisely, is the benefit of having everyone "chip in" with comments (both good and bad), together we are all learning!
      Thank you again for your continuing support, it is appreciated.

    Hello David, and Happy New Year. I’ve been growing the Pugster series in south eastern Ontario (🇨🇦) for +/- 3 years now, specifically the ‘Blue’ specimen which, really, is actually more of a dark purple than blue per se. My success has been so-so so far having lost a couple over the years. They seem, IMO, somewhat finicky which, I feel is related to site location and moisture levels. I find they do not like having ‘wet’ feet (ie. need good drainage and fertile soil) and need more than 6 hrs of sun per day. But,….when they bloom they put on a show of their own and the fragrance…just amazing. I do deadhead and agree that they will continue to flower till first frost. I already have 3 ‘blues’ in my cold house which will be added to my ever-increasing landscape in spring 2024 along with one or two Worry-Free Ruby Snow hydrangeas. I also need to find something that is yellow flowering to complement the buddleia’s…….any suggestions??

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thank you. As you correctly mention Buddleias have to have free draining conditions to thrive and do well, and if their roots sit in wet soil they will suffer. Over the years I've been amazed at their ability to thrive in places where there's no soil at all (i.e. old demolition sites where they sprout up with their roots in rubble)!
      So obviously, if you want your Buddleias to do better... Its time for a "ride in the wheel barrow" or you lift and replant them in an elevated (raised up) site with lots of gravel or even old building debris! Anywhere sunny that gets their crown up above the water table. As for a yellow or golden companion... How about some of the yellow flowered Coneflowers e.g. Echinacea Kismet Yellow: czcams.com/video/92NP1hOOlm0/video.htmlsi=Rp2smj4yyizPyWMm ?
      We are big fans of the strongly saturated colors in Harini's breeding (Terra Nova) and her yellows are particularly eye catching. They flower about the same time, would be a good complimentary size and enjoy the same sort of sunny WELL DRAINED site!
      Don't forget to keep us all updated with your progress, and let us know how you efforts turn out.

      I purchased the pugster amethyst late last summer/early fall- so hardy and smells so nice!
      I have planted plants/bulbs that have orange hues to complement it as the blooms have orange color inside. I live in formerly zone 5b (but now “6a” according to new usda zoning map) but it has thrived even after I thought I had it too high above the ground. It also grew leaves in the stems that had become bald before I bought it for the store.
      I had heard via another gardener to have it slightly above the ground level.
      I was shocked it remained green during frost and some snow here until recently.
      I really love this shade and how shorty it is!
      I am tempted to buy the other 2 colors so they are clustered together in my garden bed 😊 = more butterflies! 🦋

      Thanks for your input. We think you will enjoy having any of these selections. Just make sure that wherever you put them is free draining! And, if there's any doubt about the drainage, we suggest you elevate the planting spot by making a raised bed. Having their crowns and roots up out of saturated winter and early spring conditions is very important.

      That's one of the fun things about ornamental gardening.... we get to explore plant combinations and create our own little bits of personal, living artistry.
      As you've probably noted, all three are excellent selections and deserve spots in our gardens. Good tip on raising the crown up slightly and it is interesting that yes, some of the selections are almost semi-evergreen! Hi David. So what is the secret to keep them alive and get them to flower. I have pugster Amethyst and it survived last year but came back smaller with much smaller flowers. It did not produce the size flowers it had in the nursery can. I planted it high. It is in a rich but clayish soil. I am in 5b/6a. Do we really believe the new zone chart ;). What about fertilizer? It is in mostly sunny with afternoon sun. It is in an area where my David Austin Olivia which did great this year and was from barefoot. BTW you told me Olivia was a great plant I totally agree and love it. I just ordered 2 more bare roots to plant in spring. Any advice on the butterfly bush would be appreciated. Thanks and Happy New Year!

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks for your kind remarks, it is great to hear your Olivia Rose Austin is doing well.
      With Buddleias (and roses too), the important thing is GOOD DRAINAGE! They just do not like "wet feet", and it sounds like your clay soil is taking its toll!
      David suspects your plant is establishing during the drier, late spring and summer months, but then suffering root dieback in wetter, autumn and winter periods. This is why it is slower to get going with weak growth and smaller flowers.
      The remedy would be transplant it into a raised bed where the roots would be well above the water table. Once established they are remarkably drought tolerant and will actually exist and grow well in rocky, quite barren places, so don't worry too much about fertilizer, but concentrate instead in making sure those roots are up, out of, wet saturated clay soil pockets.
      If when you are looking at any of the videos filmed in our trial and testing area at the nursery, you will see that we grow all our plants in raised beds!
      That's because we have a layer of clay soil beneath our sandy topsoil, that prevents deep drainage, and if we didn't raise up the planting level we would have poor growth too.
      Hope this helps.
      As far as we know, we think you have already you subscribed to our channel, which is great!

      A clay soil is one of the most nutritious soils we can have, the trouble is, its wet and cold, and when saturated doesn't have air between the fine particles, the roots and essential soil organisms can't survive to promote good growth.
      If you take a little time to view some of the other videos here on this channel (e.g. the ones on growing Lavender: czcams.com/video/4A55OCs82t0/video.htmlsi=9esLszzRv3EIH1LC ) you'll see that in our trial garden all the beds are raised up!
      That's because we have a layer of clay under the top soil that prevents good drainage! So, see if you can raise up the level of your planting spots - so that the crowns of the plants never have to sit in cold wet saturated conditions. As you will see, with this technique, we very successfully grow things like Lavender that thrive in sharp drainage.
      Incorporating sand or better still grit or even small sized gravel will help, but if the water table is high - then all you will have is wet saturated gravel!
      Most importantly, NEVER work, drive on, or walk on wet saturated soil - this compacts the site, "poaches" (damages) it, and makes it a lot worse! Rather wait for it to dry up and if you talk to farmers or "old timers" in their vegetable gardens, they will tell you about how they loosely and deeply dig up their soils in Autumn and leave it "rough" during the winter to allow the action of frost to "open up" the soil. Working in copious amounts of organic matter (garden compost, manure etc.) gets worms, and those all important little soil organisms going too, and that's when (providing the drainage improves) is when you get a healthy, thriving soil that supports excellent and sustained root growth. Finally, adding lime will help to "flocculate" (bind) the soil particles causing it to be more loose and "crumbly"! Thanks for asking a very important question - one that maybe we can get David to expand upon in one of his upcoming videos.
      Meanwhile, we hope all this helpful.

    Is the pugster series sterile?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Před měsícem

      They are not sterile and have the capacity to set seed, so if you wish to prevent seed production and of course get the lovely benefit of repeat and concentrated flowering, they should be dead headed or trimmed back after flowering.
      This helps to keep them extra bushy, and fresh and colorful too.
      So, by spending a few minutes regularly trimming off the old flowers is well worthwhile.

    I was told that these can become invasive.

      These pugster are bred to be noninvasive. The bigger types I’ve researched are the more invasive type but not all. I specifically wanted NON invasive ones and I got the pugster amethyst- just be careful in reading the tags 😊

      Buddleia davidii (the original species) is invasive in some parts of the country. And some of the older (often larger growing) selections have high seed counts too, which can lead to nuisance seedlings popping up in the garden. We are careful to use our experience study this and we endeavor to work closely with the best scientific institutions to make sure that any of these selections are not offered through our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/
      We are continually refining our list and eliminating any that show this tendency.
      In addition, if you've been watching some of David's videos, you may have noticed that he is keen to recommend regular dead heading (removing the old seedheads)!
      Not only does this go a long way in helping to preventing unwanted seedlings, it encourages new rebloom and of course more color and better performance.
