i love how legolas emphasises the bread by taking the smallest nibble possible

To be fair, for filming reasons he probably had to take several bites. PB has a habit of filming people and scenes from every possible angle. Especially for a movie like LotR, where they had to work with 'little people' and the like.
It was a nice touch to show that Sam was uncomfortable getting in the boat, since hobbits from the Shire were wary of watercraft.
Yeah, it mentions repeatedly in the book that Sam was especially wary of travelling by boat.
he also didnt know how to swim, which comes up later in the movie

But to get the splendid knife from the ancient elf lord... if you know the history of orcs and elves... this scene gives me little shivers... 'You are being tracked.'

Vuong Nguyen He said so few words to the hobbits, eventually near the end, Frodo could not remember his name after he woke up in the Fellowship reunion.

@@KiwiImpactSaint Actually Frodo saw Legolas in Mirror of Galadriel. He saw them before Merry, Pippin and Sam. That shows how much Frodo cared about Legolas.
I like how these extended scenes gave Celeborn the Wise something to actually do rather than just be there as an ornament to Galadriel.

@@diollinebranderson6553I agree that this actor doesn't quite work, and Haldor's actor frankly comes across as bitchy. In fact, I think the only full elf in the three films who comes across right is Galadriel, and that's credit to Cate Blanchett.
This movies balanced drama, horror, humor and tragedy perfectly.
I didn't like how Legolas is so obviously older in The Hobbit, but he was still cool.
MrJedabak I still do not like Legolas in the Hobbit films. Tolkien intended for him to be traveling beyond the iron mountains during the Battle of Five Armies. He never placed Legolas into the story in newer editions of his Hobbit book even after the LOTR books published.

Well, the newer editions of The Hobbit after LotR was published had no changes at all, I think the change that Bilbo had stolen the ring when in the first editions Gollum willingly gave it to him for losing the riddle game was made before LotR came out, but I'm not sure.
In fact, I do know that Tolkien had intended for a revised version of The Hobbit that would've included lead ups to LotR, but then he died and all that material when to the Silmarillion.
Legolas as a character had not been created when The Hobbit was published, but if elves live thousands of years it would make sense that he was there with his father, but just a cameo in the movie would've been nice, instead of bringing him to the forefront of the movies. Of course, there wasn't much Jackson could do when New Line made him turn his 2 movies into three.

+MrJedabak I like Legolas but I hated the love triangle between him, Kili, and Tauriel plus he was more likable in the LotR trilogy. The Hobbit would have been better without the romance or Tauriel.

This scene should have been left in the theatrical version since it shows where Sam and Frodo got the lembas bread they were eating in either TT or RotK and where Aragorn got the knife.

Eh, if I am not mistaken, the extended editions were released a month before the next movie came out. So those who were paying attention had the chance to buy them and watch them before the new movie came out. I also know for a fact that many theaters were having a special screening where you could watch the FOTR and TTT extended editions and then the premier of the ROTK theatrical release, all in one day. I went to this and it was one of the best times I ever had.
It was pretty obvious to me. The second movie starts with Pippin dropping the leave broche which Aragon calls the "leaves of lorien". You should also realize by then, that all Fellowship Members are wearing these coats.
In the third movie, they show the lembas bread, which is wrapped in leaves, indicating they got those in lorien too.
The Dagger is left unexplaned, yes, but Aragorn could have always had it.
Celeborn is so badass in his few scenes! If they will ever make a movie about the War in the North, i would love to see Celeborn killing orcs fully-armed while defending Lothlorien!

@@chercher304 Mainly because as cool as Glorfindel is, he is a one-shot character and does nothing after aiding Frodo.
Glorfindel is overpowered, summoning him to accompany the fellowship will surely attract Sauron's attention and he has spies all over. He will possibly send one hundred thousand orcs to occupy all the lands surrounding the hobbit journey then instead of focusing his armies on Gondor, the elves, and the lands up north.

there where smaller actors that portrayed hobbits and dwarves when they couldn't fake it with forced perspective. They guy who played Gimli's scale double is a former jockey with knee problems and had a hard time getting around in full costume. Orlando Bloom is being a class act and helping him get around.
Come to think of it, this might be more meaningful than it first appears.
Because after TLotR, all Elves set sail to valinor. This is also where Frodo and Bilbo go at the end, they are allowed to come with them, because they where Ringbearers. (Sam was also allowed to go, but he stayed in Middle Earth until his wife died)
Anyway, when Legolas went to Valinor, he vouched for Gimli to come with him, and he was allowed to, just because they where such good friends. So, in a way, Legolas helped Gimli into a boat there as well.

I really wish they will include this in the movie. It really helped to explain on how the Fellowship got their things for journey, such as foods, cloaks, etc.

Peter Jackson said that this was one of the hardest scenes for him to cut, because, yeah, it explains where the cloaks, the lembas, and all of the other things came from. In fact, it was one of the main reasons why the extended editions got released in the first place. He wanted to make sure that people would have a chance to see these scenes before the next film came out.

It’s so sick when, having you always watched LOTR extended versions, realize which scenes are extended.
I know right, I've never watched the theatrical cut so I'm always surprised when I see videos like this that say extended version. This feels like such an important scene as well though it is a bit much exposition
Pretty much the extended editions should be the de facto standard to watch these films, there is 0 need for the theratrical versions to exist

@@inr9751 I rewatched The Two Towers EE and boy, it was a bloody slog to get through, I think now it does have some pacing and tonal issues.
Fellowship I loved in it’s Extended format since the changes weren’t all that noticeable yet actually improved the pacing and fleshed out everything more.
First time I've seen Legolas interact with a hobbit. Aside from the whole '...And you have my bow' thing.

He also helped Merry and Pippin up after they got out of Moria.
It blows my mind knowing that Galadriel is older then the sun and moon and that she and Celeborn have been around since the First Age.
Lembas kind of reminds me of a military food called fortified peanut butter. One tube of it will fill you up for two days... but afterward you will shit a literal brick.

These are the best movies ever created. Leaving the ridiculously good story, acting, etc aside, also the cinematics, the ambiance create such an unique setting, nothing ever done compares to it.
You can see Celeborn’s breath as he speaks. It must have been freezing in that area of NZ for the actors.
Middle Earth is cold especially in the North.
@@goodputin4324 They arent in the north though, it is more like the northern part of the middle section. Rohan and gondor beeing the main center while north of Lorien is the northern lands up to Gundabad. But it would still be rather cold because a) they are directly at the food of a giant mountain range and b) they are directly at a river. Although couldnt galadriel simply head up Lorien with her rings power? I mean its not like elves were winter clothing at any point in Loren anyway :D

The fellowship was in Lorien around the beginning of 3019 T.A., around february (I think), so, considering the whole of the story-relevant part of Middle Earth is in european latitudes, it should be cold in the early morning
Some of them got very sick. The extended says so.
Still the best. The fact we come back to watch these scenes years and years after it finished.

Behind the scenes: In the book, Lembas was exceedingly delicious; in the film, the flatbread they used tasted particularly awful.
Of course in the films it's delicious too or Pippin wouldn't have eaten four loaves.

And he rams it into Lurtz leg who then licks his own blood and throws it Back...
And he uses it to parry Eowin's sword when she is practicing in the great hall of Rohan. And he uses it to stab the orc riding the warg right before he falls off the cliff.

I always thought the looks on their faces indicated indigestion from accidentally overeating.
I haven't seen the extended version yet, I've had them delivered to my parents house so it will be a while until I can see them, although I've seen clips on CZcams. I can't believe I haven't seen this part yet. I can't wait to see what other hilarious parts I've missed out on.
The casting of the elves were perfect in these films.
it's also their hair and clothing, the Ring of Power Elves looks kinda weird imo.
I just realized this literally the only time Legolas interacts with any of the Hobbits.
In an earlier scene he says "You have my bow" to frodo plus in a deleted scene he looks at one of the hobbits when they reach to the door to Moria.
Thats funny becasue at the end of the journey when frodo awakes and the fellowship re join him he literally says everyones names except legolas

The elf ears in the movies look good and almost subtle point. The elf ears in the rings of power are comically big, like they had some left over from the Witcher show and just used those.

And explains why Pippin and Merry can escape the Rohan ambush on the Uruk-Hai
FUN FACT: Now reading the Silmarillion, the lembas bread given by Galadriel is actually a historic tradition of high honor and value. According to Chapter 21: of Turin Turambar, the keeping and giving of lembas belonged to the queen alone.
This makes perfect sense that galadriel would be the one that gives lembas to the fellowship.
This was since the days of the first age in Doriath with queen Melian the Maia, whom Galadriel learned a lot from being under her counsel.
Loved the subtle bow from Gimli when receiving the gifts.. In the book, Dwarves are noble and honorable race, unlike those portrayed in The Hobbit films.

I have to say, the actor they chose for Celeborn was spot-on. Great casting.
Marton Csokas. Kiwi actor, originally from Hungary...
The entire cast is spot-on and brilliant, but I do think the elvish actors in minor roles deserve praise for how much they can convey with so little. Guys like Celeborn, Haldir and Figwit had minor parts, but they still managed to display their character's personalities beyond just ethereal elvish elegance (sure, having a good script helps wonders, but still. Credit where credit is due).
I liked him too, a lot of people didn't, but his name is Celeborn the Wise and Galadriel married him. He has to be manly, wise, and intelligent.

@@nessyness5447 In Tolkien's lore the Elven Realms are on pretty good terms with each other, they aren't nowhere near as territorial as the other Kingdoms. The Last Alliance of Elves and Men was all the Elven Kingdoms alongside Gondor.

I like this scene because it teaches you about the lembas bread. I never knew the bread that they were eating was special in any way until I saw this. No wonder Sam and Frodo were able to make it so far while hardly eating anything

I vividly remember Merry saying back "I had seven!" But, but it's not there. I watched this movie so many times when I was a child and I could've sword that was a thing he said! But I'm wrong...... and now I'm sad. That was a fond childhood memory of mine but in all actually it may have been a dream I had about the movie...... I need to watch the movies again.... the extended versions....

receiving the three requested hairs refused to one of the highest of their kind, gimli proved himself beyond worthy of the title " elf-friend" which he carried with him to the lands beyond, after his long years in middle earth spent with his dear friend.
It takes four whole lembas breads to make a Hobbit feel bloated. Very impressive.
This scene really shows how serious and new the Uruk-hai threat is to the Elves. For centuries Orcs have traveled and attacked under cover of darkness. Funny add on to this scene, Bloom had trouble doing the scene with the lembas bread without it “sounding like he was doing an advert for it” which caused hysterics for Boyd and Monaghan to get through takes.
