    So glad I found your channel! I have been sewing since I was 8 and I have saved my patterns forever. My daughter, 34, now uses my patterns from the 60s and 70s. She especially loves Betsy Johnson patterns. We are now taking apart her great grandmother's dresses from 1950-51 to make dress patterns. She is exactly the same size as her great grandmother. These are homesewn clothes with super details and great fit. We'll be sewing them back together after we take a pattern.

    A+ agree with everything you said at the 10 minute mark. Please, please people don't destroy old quilts and patterns! That's a travesty that has to stop, NOW.
    I guess i could be considered an "old lady" now, I just turned 60, so do the math, yes I was born in 1963 into a family of sewing women. My mother had me sitting on a stack of encyclopedias when i was 8 years old in front of her big brown Singer (which she still sews on to this day, btw) and I recall tons of patterns everywhere. We did keep some, i have few that date from my teenage years in the 70s, and those patterns are so well made compared to now. My own collection ranges from the 70s to the 90s and i have used and adapted many of then over and over.
    And even though i myself was an 80s bride, and yes, i do still adore my wedding dress, we have to blame Princess Diana for that big 80s aesthetic we all wanted! Lol! There are hideous fashions in every era for sure.
    Edited to add: I find it quite amusing when i am browsing vintage patterns on the internet and recognize one and find myself saying "oh my goodness we had that pattern!" and it triggers a memory of what we made with it. My mother went through a phase in the 70s where she made Leisure Suits for my father. Yes, they were polyester double knit, and he was rockin' that style!

      Thanks for sharing this Melanie! So right that every era has its hideous bits. I love knowing that your dad was out strutting in suits your mother made! But I can't imagine wearing head-to-toe 70s double poly... what an era 😅

    Happy I found you 🎉 I totally AGREE. It is heartbreaking to see the crafty ladies not respecting a beautiful handmade quilt 😢😢 to make a Buck at a craft fair.
    I also get sentimental about those old patterns lol. I’m an old woman now and still have a handful of the patterns I picked out with my mom when learning to make my high school clothes. Before that it was doll clothes I was making from my own designs.
    Great video!

      @@StephSewn Well I lived that, so maybe not the best idea to revisit it too closely. People might think I never cleaned out my closet! I have a large collection of Vogue Issey Miyake patterns from the 80’s and 90’s. Fabulous designs, timeless because they don’t really fit into an era. And really fun to sew! I hope lots of people find your channel. I’ll be watching!

    I love my vintage patterns! I have so many from my Grandma with her notes on them. I even have the pattern she used for her wedding dress (1957). Because I tend to need to make alterations to original pieces, I will make tracings that I can hack up guilt free! I bought an inexpensive roll of "exam table paper" on Amazon, which I use as tracing paper.

    Couldn't agree more. The first time I used a factory folded 1950s pattern I swear I heard it sigh 'at last' ❤ On another channel there was a recommendation to buy a vintage sewing book from the era you are most likely to be drawn to pattern wise. All the information you will need will be in there. I would say this holds true for 1950s and earlier books but not possibly later. Having said that I still use my enormous Singer sewing book from the 70s more regularly than any other of my vintage collection and I know others swear by the Reader's Digest one or the Vogue one. Just found you and looking forward to seeing more.

    I'm going to leave a second comment on this video, and it's a special request... Please consider doing a series of videos where you "show and tell" about your large collection of vintage patterns. I can draft a doll-clothes-sized pattern from a picture, and I'm always looking for channels that can inspire my own doll clothes designs. But one of the problems I have is that people who do a lot with vintage patterns are too busy showing off their own makes, when what I really want to see is the original pattern envelope. I want to see the pics on front and the specs on the back for an extended period of time in the video's timeline. So maybe do a study of front and back of each of 3 to 5 patterns at a time, per video. Tell what you love about the pattern in your commentary and tell what looks challenging about the pattern and why, for added commentary. I hope you consider my request! I'll be watching for it!!! ❤ ❤ ❤ 🙏

    I am really enjoying your channel and very happy you showed up in my feed! I have a very large vintage pattern collection from the 70's, 80's, 90's, & 2000's. I adopted them from an Estate sell, Ebay, Facebook market place. I probably have 700 patterns and a large collection of fabrics that I bought from the Estate sell. I have found newspaper articles in a few of the patterns along with notes for who the pattern is for. When I hold one of my patterns, I say I wondered who used to own this pattern. I can still smell the perfume that someone wore on the pattern. It makes me feel a connection to them. I noticed that we have a lot of the same patterns too! I look forward to watching more of your videos!

My secret ... ask anyone who's mothers were from around the 50s, oh did your mother sew and is she ready to be rid of her sewing items. Check out the patterns, sewing supplies and fabric I 've scored, mostly for free. Keep inspiring.

    hank you for your valued information. I do have one question a bout US an European sizing that you see on the modern reproduction patterns, the US sizing is a number system, not unlike ours in the UK just different numbers for different sizes, and the European sizes used are higher numbers, none of these bear any resemblance to UK sizing systems, so I am always totally confused what size I am in the patterns, any advice?? many thanks x

    • @StephSewn
      @StephSewn  Před rokem

      The sizing systems are definitely confusing! My best advice here is to ignore the number altogether and focus on the implied body measurements and the finished garment measurements. Sizing has changed really significantly over the time a 1960s size 18 is not a 2023 size 18, and neither will be similar to a current retail 18. I always reference the bust / waist / hip measurements the sizing is intended to reflect (usually can be found on the back of the pattern). Hope this helps!
