Relationship status: Two blobs that are very close
I think that the video will be better without music....specially the intro 😊👍🏻

Status update: starting to think my partner and my baby are literally also me
You and me, baby, we ain't nothin' but ciliates, so let's do it like they do on... our local PBS affiliate?
Brilliant!

😂😂😂 You win, sir.

"Hey, babe, I'm really digging your scent. What do you say we ditch this slide and go become a little bit of each other?"
If I were searching for a date, this flirt line would be successful
They may never see eachother again because they became eachother. A love story more profound than most dramas.
Conjugate your verbs my teacher always said. Little did I know....
Partners mating to become their own offspring is honestly kinda beautiful in a way.
As a microbe you have a full right to it. But keep it out of my bedroom.
Kinda my first feeling. A little like rebirth!🤩
Edit: ok. That's silly of me. IT IS rebirth isn't it?☺️
I don't know sounds a little bit selfish for me...
When a mommy micro-animal and a daddy micro-animal love each other very much...
they might become their own offspring o.0
So *Immortality* through rebirthing to your own self by your self that is some intense paradoxical situation
or becoming a baby every time your old
@@toothpasteman3400 Some Jellyfish has also been recorded doing that too
@@thedoruk6324 that's exactly what I was talking about

I also enjoy practicing my conjugation alone
Can you please, for april fools day, do an episode about the "Macrocosmos". Things that are really small, but huge under a microscope like little water crustaceans, or some small worms/ nematodes that would look HUGE under the microscope. Again, small things in the real world, absolutely massive in the micro.
I'll second that suggestion
Alternatively: Macrocosmos but we look at cats and stuff
@@malaakm7655 dude I didnt even think that it's just their narration of normal sized things that they interact with. Maybe a 2 part series.
@@danielc7964 honestly i could listen to Hank Green narrate pretty much anything
I vote for the cat video.
2:20 awww they made a heart
Wow. That's so weirdly beautiful, to me. That they're essentially their own offspring... Life is so fascinating.
It might make for a crazy horror storey.
Yo my spanish teacher must be immortal. She does this all the time
HAHAHAHAHHAHAH this guy is funny.
Even during class? You should probably report her then.
@Ash С i think she knows so wooosh yourself!
@Cello Daughter of Chaos They were joking too
3:45 Always thinking with the micronucleus...
I love that extended moment of silence just before Hank says his thank you tagline. Combined with the music, it's quite emotional.
Yes! It gives time to just linger in the thoughts just a little bit longer. Its really considerate.
"The knowableness of the universe."
Just this phrase brings tears to my eyes.
Personifying cells? Yeah, I'm into it
Fantastic video
And may I say that while I myself clearly still have the maturity levels of a ten year old and could NOT stop giggling at various points, your delivery was perfect, calm, smooth - just tossing out the necessary terms without turning a metaphorical hair. Also, I know how to pronounce "coitus" out loud so thank you for that too.
Immature jokes aside, the photography here is once again blowing my mind. Right about at 3:40 I was just gob-smacked by the way you captured the dimensionality of the Ophryoglena, how you made it possible to really SEE the roundness of it. No longer just a flat shape on an illustration plate, not just a pencil sketch in a lab journal, but a BODY. It feels somehow more real, almost tangible, in a way that may not be "special" to some folks but for me... magical. Really.
Thank you so much for continuing to take us on this journey!
I feel so awkward watching this and I think that speaks to how well this channel humanizes tiny creatures
why did the end of this one almost make me cry??
how broken is my empathy??
It's the music. It's probably the most emotional one out of all the pieces in the soundtrack.
I found it more serene and calmig than sad. Probably bcs I finished his sentence "they may never see each other again" with "as they are one and the same"
What if I released Gamone 1... and you released Gamone 2... and we were both ciliates 😳
This channel is now my new favourite channel on all of youtube. I just cant get enough of these videos, and Ive watched every new video released since the channels inception.
The music, the visuals, the calm narration of Hanks voice. All of it is such a gem to be able to witness.
When you're so sleepy that you really believe for .75 seconds that there is a chemical called "Yes."
What
Oh right I got to the bit of the video
the best spoken mini novella so far. also more new words than i have ever heard without listening to a different language. thankyou
"Becoming your own baby" sounds like the name of an Indie rock album.
Snap! I just ran a conjugation experiment in the lab this weekend. I assure you that it was much less exciting than this video.
Don't downplay yourself! Who was the lucky one? :D
@@Biped you made my day, thank you
Oh, I’m my own grandpa!
I’m my own grandpa!
It sounds funny, I know,
But it really is so!
Oh, I’m my own grandpa!
Glad I’m not the only one singing that quietly to myself. :D
Sexual reproduction, definitely comes in many different forms, when in practice.
Thank you for this information. It seems that science will always find something new about even the single celled organisms.
I love watching these videos and being transported to a world a bit smaller and a bit more simple but beautiful all the same
I remember learning about conjugation back in school, I've only now found a detailed explanation for it that keeps me awake :-)
🎶 Bring your cilia close to mine 🎶
After conjugation the DNA in the nucleus is changed, but the cell and it's structure was produced using its old DNA. It's like a chimera.
love the stunning visuals on this channel. microscopy is one of my special interests along with mycology, it would be amazing to see a video about more types of mushrooms and their spores, if you guys don't have one in the works already that is. I would actually go mental
this is just one if my favorite channels. Ive watched every single video...
This might be one of your best episodes yet
How is it that Hank makes everything so fascinating ?!
okay but why did i cry
Maybe ciliates can't choose who they love any more than we can.
these cells really do be chilling post coitus
Just discovered this channel. Incredible content, thank you for the free education
I didn't know that such a way of reproduction exist and I'm so very amazed. I am barely able to find the right words to describe my feelings. It's so interesting and yet so exciting. The microcosmos shows the real perfection of life. I wish I'd have a microscope to look for these wonderful creatures by myself.
This was very helpful for my Zoology module. Actually a lot of your videos are, thank you!
thank you so much for the explanation!!
I love your channel so much
I wish I had the dedication to study protozoology
Always fascinating
Is this different than bacterial conjugation since bacteria just share plasmids during conjugation correct? This was so fascinating.
The ciliates share micronucleus
9:04 I mean, did they ever really 'see' each other in the first place? I know he wasn't being literal :D
"So while conjugation may be advantageous to the species, it doesn't always work out so well for the individual."
My life contains proof that this applies to other methods of reproduction as well.
Conjugation, when a parent and another parent come together to become a child and their twin.
Great video
Truly fascinating.
Me scrolling through CZcams recommendations innocently...
This video: BECOME YOUR OWN BABY THROUGH CONJUGATION
i am laughing when the man said that you don't need to find a mate if you can duplicate yourself! :'D
Who's my little baby? Whooo's my little baby?
I'm my little baby!
Awww that was so romantic!!
Was sure this was a physics vid from the thumbnail text for a second there...
Seems ideal TBH That sounds amazing
This video could have been made in the ocean on Enceladus or Europa! Imagine this is what astrobiologists will be searching for to begin with - how cool is that?
Thanks🔬
sick beat!
“Hey, I want your nucleus.”
“I want YOUR nucleus!”
“Lets do it then!”
6:54 This made me laugh way too much. It didn't help that the clip got cut off at the perfect moment. XD
Every time this comes up in my recommendations, I have to remember that it's not a how-to video.
Deam.....this one hit me diferently....
1:45 "some of which we documented in disgust already on this channel"
... documented and discussed...
The saddest tale, I'm about to cry, mate.
fascinated!
why didn't youtube put this in my recommendeds?
had to go to my subscription feed, which i rarely do.
Did you perhaps accidentally tell youtube not to suggest this channel? I have done that before.
Love One Another
I even swiped left on myself

Quizá nunca mas vuelvan a verse pero, ellos saben y disfrutaron de ese momento y en este caso en particular esto perdurara por mucho mucho tiempo, quizá volviéndose mas inmortales que muchos de los que miramos y comentamos en este video.
Noiiiiiiice!
thanks for the DIY how to basically birth yourself tutorial! might use later
That was wild 😳
So they really are just dancing. The fusion dance, still counts.
All I could think: “and beneath a man is his… nuuccleus.”
I'd have thought "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye more appropriate for this video.
I don’t remember learning this in biology class...
It's okay if you forgot. I only remember the word anyway, like cojugation, gametosis, and something about vegetable reproduction
That’s neat.
I wanna be like these little critters. Conjugation sounds fun.
And you'll be a new person by the end of it
Chemical jealousy!
If this can be imagined on the multicellular scale, you have an alien species for your sci-fi franchise of choice. Two beings I guess would "melt" into a pile of goo, exchange their nuclei and reform as two new beings. Would they have the same memories as before, a mix of both, or be effectively formatted? i don't think it was ever specified how the Changelings from Deep Space 9 reproduced but maybe this is how :-)
I wonder if we can use this to reduce or reverse aging....
"What sets the mood?"
I thought that was why you were pushing the CD at the beginning of the video....
But how do they get their micronucleus back after conjugation? The zygotic nucleus serves as the new macronucleus but there is no micronucleus, right?
dude you forgot to say "thank you for coming" the microbes too
I love when you upload 😉
Oh noes those poor Hypotrich ciliates thats hilarious and sad its hard not to feel bad for them.
I’m convinced this is what the aliens want to do with us in order to evolve us and themselves
🇧🇷please traducion.
Of course these cells can conjugate! If they couldn't, they'd talk roughly like this, "Of course cell to conjugate! Is not, talk like this."
Is it possible to have an organism that conjugates but does not subsequently divide by mitosis? Of course this could not increase the number of organisms (and therefore this trait couldn't be selected for in a normal way) but could an organism exist in perpetuity exclusively via conjugation, or perhaps for many "generations" before undergoing mitosis?
That's a great album, but what is the name of the "Microbe Bongos" beat you sometimes play? It's not in this episode, but it's my favorite.
Once you have a child, your life is done, essentially the lesson here!
wow.. how romantic
Awesome! During my bachelor's degree we only ever talked about conjugation in bacteria, which is very different and honestly sounded more like rape than sex
Gamete w gamete, fine!
Gamete w gambit, what?
Well, that’s one way to do it...
