There's an old Irish legend of King Rognall and Gillies.
The Irish King is riding through his forests with a hunting party and they come across a stranger, the King talks to the man and is quickly taken by him and so offers him employment for two years, the wage is agreed and this man "Giles" enters the King's service. When the two years have passed Giles informs the King he was to leave, both were saddened at Giles departure as they had become good friends.
Several years later King Rognal and his crew of 32 set sail west into the Atlantic ocean from Ireland, after a few days sailing they "dropped anchor and donned fish-suits and crystal helmets and dived down beneath the waves.
After descending for quite a while they came across an underwater Kingdom that was being attacked by a hag and her sea monster, the King and his men slew both and then entered the underwater Kingdom, they were soon met with guards who took Rognal and his men to the Palace, they were shown in and there was Giles sat on the golden throne". (The original story is longer than my rendition)
